Hue Imperial City

4.5/5
386 reviews
The Imperial City of Hue is square, each side is about 2.5 kilometers long, surrounded by a moat. The city wall is 8 meters high and 20 meters thick, all made of bricks. There are a total of 10 city gates, each about 16 meters high. In the capital, there are six districts where hundreds of officials work, including the Imperial Court, the Secret Service, the Metropolitan Police, the History Museum, the Cabinet, and the Xixian Academy. A very important part of the capital of Hue is the Imperial City. The Imperial City adopts the architectural drawings of the Forbidden City in Beijing, so when visiting, it seems to enter a miniature version of the Forbidden City in Beijing. There is the Forbidden City, which is divided into two parts. The front is the Palace of Diligence where the emperor usually handles government affairs, the back is the Palace of Qiancheng, where the emperor lives, the Kuntai Palace where the queen lives, the Guangming Palace where the crown prince lives, and the other concubines live. Shunhui Hospital, etc. There are also flag towers, Hall of Supreme Harmony, and palace halls and temples for worshipping emperors of all dynasties in the imperial city. The entire building is quite spectacular. It is the largest and more complete ancient building complex in Vietnam and has been included in the World Cultural Heritage List.Hue · 1.9 km from downtown

The main hall of Thien Mu Pagoda, the Dai Hung Palace, is built within an elegant garden. The first sanctuary inside houses a bronze Maitreya Buddha statue. In addition, the temple also contains a giant bell and a stone stele carried by a marble turtle, approx. 2.5m high, which records the contribution of Thien Mu Pagoda to the promotion of Buddhism in Vietnam.Hue · 4.4 km from downtown

The Royal Mausoleums of the Nguyen Dynasty are located in the south of Hue City, including the Mausoleum of Gia Long, the Mausoleum of Ming Ming, the Mausoleum of Shaozhi, the Mausoleum of Su Duc, the Mausoleum of Jianfu, the Mausoleum of Tongqing and the Mausoleum of Qi Ding, etc. Most of these Mausoleums are modeled after the tombs of the emperors of the Ming and Qing Dynasties in China. The shape is simple and the style is different. You don't have to go to each of these mausoleums, just pick one or two that you are interested in visiting.Hue · 1.5 km from downtown

Mausoleum of Emperor Tu Duc

Emperor Thu Duc, who was good at poetry and prose, chose a place worthy of him, showing the will of the profound and romantic personalities among the successive emperors of the Nguyen family. At that time, in order to avoid internal and external troubles, Emperor Sude ordered the construction of this mausoleum as a palace. When the construction started, Emperor Side named it Wannianji, and later it was renamed Qiangong, and after it collapsed, it was called Qianling. Behind the Qiangong Gate is the area where the emperor came to relax. In the middle is the Liangqian Hall, where the emperor used to do business, and now it is the place where the emperor's mother, the Empress Dowager Ciyu, was worshipped. The entire Tu Duc Mausoleum looks a bit dilapidated. In the early years of liberation in 1975, the Nguyen Dynasty architecture was regarded as a feudal symbol and was not preserved until the early 1990s. It was listed as a national relic.Hue · 3.9 km from downtown

The Ming Ming Emperor's Mausoleum started construction in 1840. The Ming ordered the emperor to change Jinji Mountain into Xiaoshan Mountain, and called the mausoleum Xiaoling Mausoleum. In January 1841, the construction work was not completed when the Ming Ming emperor died. One month after Emperor Shaozhi ascended the throne, he immediately ordered the construction of the Xiaoling Mausoleum to continue according to his father's drawing. On August 20, 1841, the body of the Emperor Mingming was transported to Baocheng for burial, but construction was not completed until early 1843. The Ming Ming emperor's mausoleum starts from Dahongmen and ends at the foot of Luocheng behind the mausoleum. And Xiandemen is the beginning of the sleeping hall area. Chong'en Hall is located in the middle, surrounded by left and right side halls and left and right pine houses. Passing through Hongzemen, you will arrive at Minglou. The majesty and serenity of the building, coupled with the natural beauty of flowers and trees, has fully reflected the emperor's stern character, profound knowledge and romantic feelings. The Ming Emperor Mausoleum is a relatively magnificent royal tomb, with a particularly symmetrical building in the open area. It is more appropriate to say that this is a large park than a mausoleum. The entire mausoleum covers a vast area, but there are not many buildings. Walking through it, surrounded by lush greenery, it is like walking in a park.Hue · 8.6 km from downtown

The average altitude of Haiyun Peak is 496 meters, and it is 20 kilometers long. It is the natural border between Hue Province and Da Nang City. The scenery of Haiyun Peak is majestic and full of poetry. Fengling overlooks the sea, and the mountains are surrounded by clouds in four seasons, so it is called "Haiyun Peak". There is a gate on the mountain, which is called "the first majestic gate in the world". The pass on Hai Van Peak in Da Nang was the dividing line between Vietnam and the Champa kingdom in the 15th century. The two watchtowers on the pass, one is left by the French colonists, the other is left by the US military during the Vietnam War, which seems to tell the two sad history of Vietnam. The Panshan Highway in Haiyunling and the Linggu Beach along the road were once selected as one of the 50 places to visit in life by National Geographic.Hue · 65.5 km from downtown

The interior is huge; walking around inside is exhausting, so renting an electric bicycle is a better option. You can pay with cash or a local app (it probably won't work without a Vietnamese phone number).

The Royal Tombs are a must-see when visiting Vietnam. I always feel that such places are very mysterious and you have to go in with a pious heart to pay your respects. The architectural style outside is very Vietnamese, and the earth-colored exterior walls are nice.

The cemetery is beautifully constructed, and gardens with waters always exude spirit and vitality. Surprisingly, the mausoleum was built in such an elegant environment. The mausoleum's dignity and solemnity were desalinated because of the beautiful scenery created by plants and trees. So the whole mausoleum did not feel a bit gloomy. I just wanted to stay in this beautiful garden for a little longer. Unfortunately, time was not allowed.

Hai Van Peak is on the road from Da Nang to Hue. It spirals up all the way and when you reach the top, you can overlook the sea. The scenery is magnificent and majestic. It is named Hai Van Peak because of the clouds surrounding the mountains. There is a pass on the mountain where you can stop for a while. There is a Chinese character "天下第一雄关" (The First Pass in the World).
