Izu Peninsula

Izu Peninsula is a peninsula formed by volcanic activity. Two of the world's rare volcanic arcs converge here, creating a diverse landscape interwoven with hot springs, volcanic rock coasts, and mountain valleys. The peninsula is surrounded by the sea on three sides, offering a rich variety of scenery, from rugged coastlines to the dense forests and deep valleys of the Amagi Mountains. Hot springs are Izu's signature attraction. Shuzenji Onsen is said to have been established over 1,000 years ago and is a historic hot spring town on the peninsula. The hot spring street is built along the Katsura River, featuring the serene and deep Bamboo Forest Path, with Tokko-no-yu resting quietly in between. Atami and Ito on the east coast offer a different vacation atmosphere, where hotels stand by the sea, allowing you to enjoy ocean views while soaking in the hot springs. Traces of volcanic activity can be found all over the peninsula. Jogasaki Coast is a volcanic rock coast formed after lava from the eruption of Mt. Omuro approx. 4,000 years ago flowed into the sea, cooled, and was eroded by waves over many years. It spans approx. 9 km, and the Kadowaki Suspension Bridge hangs over the cliffs. Mt. Omuro itself is a perfectly round volcanic cone, and you can see a panoramic view of Izu from the summit. Dogashima on the west coast is famous for its sea caves; when you take a boat into Tensodo Cave, light pours down from the gap in the ceiling onto the water, creating a blue glow. Seafood is also a major feature of Izu. Being surrounded by the sea on three sides makes the local seafood exceptionally fresh. Splendid alfonsino is a representative local fish species, commonly found in hot spring hotels and coastal restaurants.Izu City · 13.4 km from downtown

This facility is recommended not only for families and couples but also for anyone who loves animals and plants. Mt. Omuro

Mt. Omuro is located in the Izu Highlands and was formed by volcanic eruptions. Its perfectly round, symmetrical silhouette makes it a recognizable local landmark, often described as looking like an overturned bowl. At the center of the summit is a bowl-shaped crater with a circular trail along the rim. The interior of the crater is a gentle grassy slope that has long featured an archery range, and a Sengen Shrine is built on the east side. To protect the mountain's vegetation, visitors must take a chairlift to the summit. The summit offers expansive views. On clear days, you can see Mount Fuji, the Hakone mountains, the Amagi mountain range, and the Izu Islands in the sea, making it a great spot to overlook the surrounding scenery. Due to the long-standing tradition of burning the mountain to clear weeds, the slopes are free of trees and covered only by neat grass. The unique natural landscape and expansive views offer visitors a unique high-altitude sightseeing and walking experience.Ito · 15.8 km from Izu City

Shuzenji Town is located in the central part of Onon on the Izu Peninsula, surrounded by hills surrounded by Amagi, Chaoyun and Dharma Mountains. Shuzenji Spring is a large hot spring that stretches along the Katsura River and is one of the leading hot springs in Naka-Izu. The atmosphere is very harmonious with the surrounding environment, and it has been loved by many scholars, artists and writers since ancient times. The Buddha Cone Hot Spring is said to be named after the 8th century monk Kobo Daishi tapped the rock with a Buddhist cone, and the hot spring water gushed out of the rock. The Buddha Cone Hot Spring is located in the center of the hot spring street and can be visited freely. In Shuzenji, a famous temple built by Kobo Daishi in the early 9th century, there is a legend that it was the deep courtyard of Shuzenji Temple where Kobo Daishi practiced when he was young.Izu City · 1.3 km from downtown

Jinglian Waterfall is famous for the legend of spider spirits. It is a well-known tourist attraction in the Izu area. There are green shades beside the waterfall. According to legend, it is the lair of spider spirits. The sound of the waterfall flowing down from the basalt surrounds the entire valley, and a faint nostalgic feeling can not help but flood into my heart. The waterfall is surrounded by mysterious forests, with a drop of 25 meters and a width of 7 meters. Even in summer, it is chilly due to the cold air in the mountains and the droplets of water. At the bottom of the waterfall, there is a permanent trout fishing field of Amagi International, and horseradish, a famous item of Amagi, is spread along the stream.Izu City · 11.8 km from downtown

Jogasaki Coast is a coastal landscape formed when lava from the eruption of Mt. Omuro flowed into the sea, cooled, and was subsequently eroded by waves. Jagged black lava cliffs stand along the sea, topped with dense forests. Waves crash against the rocks, and the contrast between the black volcanic rock and the lush trees makes this a representative natural coastal view of the area. A famous experience along the coast is the Kadowaki Suspension Bridge, which is suspended between cliffs. Looking down, you can see waves churning in the crevices of the rocks; the nearby Kadowaki Lighthouse has an observation deck where, on clear days, you can look out over the sea and see the silhouettes of the Izu Islands and theAmagi Mountains. Comfortable hiking trails have been built along the route, making it easy for visitors to stroll and enjoy the scenery. Hydrangeas in early summer, daylilies in midsummer, and seaside chrysanthemums in autumn bloom in turn along the coast, offering scenery to enjoy throughout the seasons.Ito · 20 km from Izu City

I really like the scenery, quietness and hot springs of the Izu Peninsula, and of course the restaurants with pure Japanese menus. Although it is a bit embarrassing, it is super exciting; I look forward to visiting in three weeks.

The cactus zoo at the foot of Mount Omuro is incredibly soothing. Over a thousand different cacti of varying shapes and sizes grow in the greenhouse, creating a spectacular sight. Most of the animals roam freely, and the most endearing are the Kapibala, who relax in the hot springs with a gentle and docile demeanor. You can even hand-feed the red pandas and alpacas. This unique blend of flora and fauna is gentle and healing, making it an unforgettable and tender memory of your trip to Izu.

It’s really nice to come to Mount Omuro when the weather is nice. It takes just a few minutes to reach the top of the mountain by cable car, and you can see endless scenery as far as the eye can see. If you have time, you can also go to the shrine or go to the archery range at the bottom of the valley. There are souvenir shops at the bottom of the mountain and Shizuoka Prefecture’s famous Wasabi ice cream.

If it is famous because of Kawabata Yasunari's "The Dancing Girl of Izu", then Shizuren Falls became famous because of the song "Flying Over the Sky", becoming a place that local Japanese people yearn for.

It's a free attraction, and the entire hike offers unique sea views, which is quite fun. The highlight was that after starting the walk from the lighthouse, I got to eat incredibly delicious Ise lobster tempura soba noodles!!! It was the perfect ending to the whole trip!

The structure is so unique that we can see it in other places. It is a World Heritage Site, but it is not well-known. Therefore there are a little people, so I highly recommend you to visit if you wanna know 1870’s.
