La'aloa Beach Park is a renowned surfing destination in Hawaii, drawing crowds of surf enthusiasts. The sand atWaikīkī Beachwas actually brought in by humans, while the sand here is naturally formed and incredibly soft. It is also the only fine white sand beach in the Kailua-Kona area. When storms hit, they wash away the white sand on the shore, earning it the nickname the vanishing beach. The waves here can be quite large, so please prioritize your safety if you are not a strong swimmer.Kahaluu-Keauhou · 15 km from Kalaoa

South of Kona International Airport (KOA). Browse this seaside park and discover how early ancient Hawaiians survived on the rugged Kona coast. There are also two huge Hawaiian fish ponds that showcase the engineering prowess of the ancient Hawaiians. Wander the white sand of Honokohau Beach, which contrasts with the black lava shoreline. Look for local wildlife, including Hawaiian green turtles (honu), native birds, and perhaps monk seals basking on the beach.Kalaoa · 7 km from downtown

49 Black Sand Beach
No. 2 of Best Things to Do in Hawaii island

49 Black Sand Beach

Black sand beach is one of the most striking coastal scenery on the island of Hawaii, and it is also a special volcanic landscape. Due to the frequent volcanic activity on the Big Island of Hawaii, the unique black sand beach here is created. When the volcano erupted, the hot lava flow poured into the seawater. Under the cooling of the seawater, its shell quickly agglomerated and hardened, and the seawater was heated and turned into a large amount of superheated steam. The outer shell of the lava flow cannot withstand the tension of the steam inside, and it falls apart, breaking into pieces of lava. The lava fragments are mainly composed of iron-rich mafic minerals such as magnetite and gabbros, and are therefore black. Since then, lava debris has accumulated on the coast, and after years of erosion and grinding by the waves, it has turned into black sand. Stepping on the black sand with bare feet, there is no feeling of being pricked at all. Its delicate and soft touch can make people relax quickly and start to appreciate and enjoy this peculiar beach, and marvel at the magic of creation.Hawaii island · 25.1 km from Kalaoa

SUNSHINE ONUS5 February 2026

- Fine White Sand: Boasting one of the few white sand beaches on the Big Island, the sand is soft and fine, a stark contrast to the common black volcanic rock beaches. - Calm Waters: A coral reef near the shore effectively reduces waves, making the water relatively calm, perfect for swimming, snorkeling, and bodyboarding, and very family-friendly. - "Turtle Beach": This is a frequent haunt and resting place for green sea turtles (Honu). With luck, you might spot them on the beach or in the shallow water.

You can see many turtles in the place, and there are really few tourists here. At the same time, the scenery here is also very good. There are not only a lot of flowers and plants, but also very beautiful sea views.

It's a beach with very few people. The location is not difficult to walk. Maybe it's because of the time we came here. The scenery is particularly good. There are reefs with special shapes. The sand on the beach is also very comfortable. The sea scenery is also good.

If you have a plan to Big Island at Hawaii near winter season, you must choose Kona then Hilo. Because kona has always great weather and suuny beach even though winter raining season. Also, Big island's most sand beach also locats at west side at Kona, so it's so important reason to keep choosing Kona. Finally, At kona, you can see beautiful sunset every day because it is west :)

Wawaloli Beach: It is famous for some sea caves that are well-known in the photography circle. I specially came to see it. It is definitely worth it. Fortunately, it is the era of digital cameras, otherwise there would not be enough film. I had a lot of fun [happy]
