House of the Black Heads

4.8/5
62 reviews
The Palace of the Blackheads is a building in the old town of Riga (Vecrīga), the capital of Latvia. The original building was built in the early 14th century and belonged to the Brotherhood of Blackheads, a guild of unmarried German merchants in Riga. From 1580 to 1886, many decorations were added successively.Latvia · Riga

Vecrīga

4.8/5
46 reviews
Although the total area of Vecrīga is not very large, it boasts over 800 years of history. Located in the Riga region of Latvia, Europe, it serves as both the geographical center of Riga and its historical and cultural center. Walking through it, you will find that the architectural styles and street layouts are much like those in Western European countries. From the Hanseatic League era, many historical landmarks remain here, such as the House of the Blackheads, along with many other historical traces. Although the name contains "Old Town," the "old" here refers to its long history, and the buildings themselves are far from "old." Each building holds its own against modern architecture, often possessing even more charm. Amber jewelry here is beautiful and quite famous. While the population is small, every Latvian is friendly and welcoming, always ready to answer travelers' questions, which is why this place is so popular with visitors.Latvia · Riga

The cathedral, built in the 13th century and located in the heart of Riga's old city, is a Gothic-style structure. The Baroque bell tower, built in 1690, was once the tallest wooden church bell tower in the world. The cathedral's preservation is a feat, having been burned down, collapsed by earthquakes, and even had its roof collapse. It was finally rebuilt in 1973, with the wooden bell tower replaced by a metal structure to increase its strength. In Riga, this is a great vantage point for overlooking the entire city. Visitors must purchase a ticket to enter the cathedral.Latvia · Riga

The Blackhead Palace is located on Riga's City Hall Square. Its red brick exterior features gables and spires, and the portico is adorned with elaborate reliefs and an astronomical clock. The interior now serves as a museum; the second-floor lobby boasts stained glass and murals, the colors softened by the light filtering through the glass. The basement wine cellar retains its vaulted structure, and the air is filled with the scents of stone and old wood. Several manicured trees stand in the square, and a nearby fountain operates in the summer. The building was destroyed during World War II and has been rebuilt, but the red brick hue harmonizes well with the surrounding older buildings.

St. Peter's Church is the tallest church in Riga's old city. It is 123.25 meters high and has also achieved another first. It is the tallest wooden church in the world. Of course, this church has also had a lot of bad luck. It has been struck by lightning and burned and destroyed in history. After many hardships, the top of the tower we see now has been changed to a metal structure. The tower has a viewing platform. The old city and church in Eastern European countries are the same. Climbing high and looking far away, overlooking the city is always an indispensable program. Don't miss it.

From Riga long-distance bus station, I took a long-distance bus with a large group of locals. After more than an hour, I arrived at Cesis, one of the most beautiful ancient towns in Latvia. It has experienced many destructions and reconstructions. The current Cesis Castle can be traced back to the early 16th century. Cesis Castle was once the strongest fortress of the Livonian Knights. It has withstood the test of all wars. It is now the best-preserved castle ruins in Latvia and the most magnificent castle ruins in the Baltic countries. Not only is there no tour group here, but there is not even a single Asian tourist. At the ticket office, each person will be given a lantern with a half candle in it, which is a lighting tool. Because there is no light in the castle, you have to carry Aladdin's magic lamp to visit, so you have to hurry out before the candle burns out. The staff at the ticket office can speak English. This is a medieval military town, and there are still many medieval castles and ancient buildings left in the jungle. The ancient city of Cesis is very small, and you can walk around it. After the visit, wait for the long-distance bus back to Riga. Except in scenic spots, you will hardly meet anyone who can speak English.
