Ponferrada Castle
Ponferrada Castle, located in the municipality of Ponferrada in the province of León, Spain, is one of the region's most iconic medieval fortified structures. The castle's original site was once an ancient Roman fortress and local citadel. In 1178, the King of León gifted the site to the Jesuit Order (Templar Knights), which initiated extensive renovation and expansion of the castle. The castle boasts a complex, layered structure, featuring an irregular square layout, walls, a moat, and a drawbridge. The city-facing side has a double line of defense, while the river-facing side has simpler defenses. The castle boasts multiple towers, some of which feature decorative battlements and arches, a defining feature of its exterior. Today, the castle is a designated National Historic and Artistic Monument and is open to the public. It houses academic and exhibition spaces, such as the "Templum Libri," which showcases medieval culture and the history of the Order. Visitors can climb some of the towers to overlook the city of Ponferrada and the confluence of the Sil and Boeza rivers.
