Pyramid of the Sun

Pyramid of the Sun stands in the center of the ancient ruins of Teotihuacan and is one of the larger structures at the site. Together with the Pyramid of the Moon and the Temple of the Feathered Serpent, it is laid out along the Avenue of the Dead that runs through the ancient city, forming the core layout of this City of the Gods. It is worth mentioning that the name Pyramid of the Sun was not given by its builders, but by the Aztecs who arrived here hundreds of years later. How the Teotihuacanos originally referred to it remains unknown to this day. The pyramid faces west, built from layers of narrowing steps, with a wide stone staircase on the front leading directly to the top. It is approx. 63 m high, with a base of approx. 225 m and a volume of approx. 1 million cubic meters. When completed, its surface was covered in plaster and painted with colorful murals. Today, the mottled stone structure still allows one to imagine its former grandeur. Its orientation was carefully designed to align with the sunrise and sunset on specific dates of the year. Caves and tunnels are hidden beneath the pyramid, which archaeologists speculate were once sacred sites for rituals. For the sake of cultural relic preservation, the pyramid is no longer open for climbing. You can look up at its massive trapezoidal silhouette from the foot of the pyramid, or head north along the Avenue of the Dead and look back from the direction of the Pyramid of the Moon to capture the panoramic view of the pyramid in your photos.San Juan Teotihuacan · 6.6 km from Oxtotipac

The Teotihuacan Local Culture Museum is located at the southern end of the Pyramid of the Sun. It displays many artifacts related to local culture, including obsidian crafts, pottery, and the use of shells and bones by the early inhabitants of this "city of the gods". The ornaments made, as well as the sand table model of the ancient city of Teotihuacan, and the replica of the feathered snake sculpture are very worth seeing.San Juan Teotihuacan · 7 km from Oxtotipac

Piramide de la Serpiente Emplumada is the collective name for the Pyramid of the Sun and the Pyramid of the Moon, and the two massive pyramids are the core attractions of the Zona Arqueologica Teotihuacan ruins in Mexico. The ancient city arose approx. 2,000 years ago and at its peak was home to tens of thousands of residents, making it one of the few major metropolises in the Americas at the time. It later fell into decline and was abandoned. The name "Zona Arqueologica Teotihuacan" was given later by the Aztecs and means "the place where the gods were born". Pyramid of the Sun is over 60 m high, its stepped body resembling a stone hill from afar. For the sake of cultural relic preservation, climbing to the top is no longer allowed, but circling the base and looking up still offers a vivid sense of its enormous scale. Pyramid of the Moon is slightly smaller and commands the northern end of La Calzada de los Muertos. In front of it is an open Moon plaza; the lower steps are open, allowing you to ascend to the first platform, from where you can look out along La Calzada de los Muertos for a full view of the Pyramid of the Sun, making it a rare elevated viewpoint within the site.San Juan Teotihuacan · 6.3 km from Oxtotipac

Pyramid of the Moon is located at the northern end of La Calzada de los Muertos in the ancient city of Teotihuacan and is the second-largest structure in the ancient city, after the Pyramid of the Sun. It is backed by Cerro Gordo, and its silhouette is believed to mimic the mountain's shape, with the pyramid and the mountain almost merging into one, forming the terminus of the entire central axis. The Aztecs who arrived here later believed that the moon deity was worshipped at the top of the pyramid, and the name has been passed down ever since; however, archaeological research tends to suggest that the rituals on the top platform were dedicated to the Great Goddess, whom the Teotihuacanos worshipped as the deity of water and fertility. This pyramid was not built all at once; it was expanded layer by layer over several centuries, enclosing earlier structures. Sacrificial remains of animals and humans have been unearthed in the pyramid's base and the tunnels beneath it, and the original altar still stands in the center of the Plaza of the Moon directly in front of it. When visiting, you might want to head north along La Calzada de los Muertos and make this your final stop: standing in the plaza and looking back, the pyramid and the mountain behind it form a silhouette.San Juan Teotihuacan · 7.2 km from Oxtotipac

La Calzada de los Muertos is an avenue in theHoly Cityof Zona Arqueologica Teotihuacan, located east of Mexico City. When the Aztecs first arrived here in the 10th century and entered this ancient city along this avenue, they found the entire city deserted. They believed the buildings on both sides of the avenue were tombs of the gods, hence the name. La Calzada de los Muertos is the main thoroughfare for the Pyramid of the Sun, the Pyramid of the Moon, and many other structures, connecting the various buildings. The avenue is nearly 4 km long and is the main path to the temple area within the archaeological site. There are vendors selling handicrafts along the sides of the avenue.San Juan Teotihuacan · 6.8 km from Oxtotipac

[Scenery] The popular spot of the Teotihuacan Local Culture Museum is that it has a long seaside avenue near the sea, with many palm trees, which is very beautiful and impressive. [Fun] It is worth driving here and stopping by the roadside to enjoy the scenery!

Compared to the Pyramid of the Sun, the Pyramid of the Moon is relatively lower and smaller. And you can only climb to the second-floor platform, not to the top of the pyramid. There is actually a tomb for human sacrifice behind the pyramid (I learned about it from the Mexico City Museum of Anthropology), but it is not accessible.

The Avenue of the Dead is located at the entrance of Teotihuacan Scenic Area. A little to the east of the starting point is the Quetzalcoatl Pyramid. The end of the avenue is opposite the Pyramid of the Moon, and to the east of it about halfway is the Pyramid of the Sun. In addition to these three most famous pyramids, there are many relics scattered on both sides of the avenue, some famous and some unknown. In addition, there are many locals doing business, selling some tourist souvenirs. One thing to note is that this road is 2 or 3 kilometers long, with many changing views on both sides, but there is no means of sunshade, except for holding an umbrella or wearing a hat. The sun is still quite powerful in Mexico City in summer.
