Fort Zeelandia

5.3
Fort Zeelandia is located on the banks of the Suriname River in Paramaribo and is considered the starting point of the city's development. Its predecessor was a wooden fort built by the French in the 1640s. In 1651, the British expanded it and renamed it Fort Willoughby. In 1667, it was captured by a fleet from the Dutch province of Zeeland, and it has been named after the province of Zeeland ever since. The current pentagonal brick outline of the fort is the result of gradual construction by the Dutch. It subsequently served as a barracks and a prison; it became the home of the Suriname Museum in 1972, was occupied by the military for a time in the 1980s, and was returned to the museum in 1995. Old cannons are still mounted on the river-facing bastion, making it a great spot to view the Suriname River and the bridge on the opposite bank. The red brick buildings surrounding the courtyard preserve former prison cells, including a small solitary confinement cell. The courtyard itself is spacious and quiet, perfect for taking photos and taking a break.Paramaribo · 6.7 km from downtown
