Rhine Falls
No. 1 of Best Things to Do in Canton of Schaffhausen

Rhine Falls

6.5
4.7/5
154 reviews
Rhine Fallsis located on the upper Rhine River in northern Switzerland, straddling the border between the Canton of Schaffhausen and the Canton of Zurich, just a few km from the old town of Schaffhausen. It is one of the most powerful waterfalls in Europe, where the riverbed, approx. 150 m wide with a drop of approx. 23 m, plunges down. During the high-water season, hundreds of cubic meters of water crash down every second, and you can hear the thunderous roar before you even get close. This waterfall was formed during the last glacial period, approx. 14,000–17,000 years ago, carved by the erosion of the riverbed narrowed by hard, erosion-resistant limestone. The massive rock standing in the center of the waterfall is a remnant of the ancient river cliff. An iconic experience is to take a small boat to the massive rock in the center of the waterfall, dock, and climb the stone steps to the platform on top, where you can feel the mist on your face and hear the deafening roar just inches from the water curtain. The views from both banks are unique: Laufen Castle on the Zurich side sits high on the cliff, making it a classic spot for a panoramic view of the waterfall; the viewing platform on the Schaffhausen side is close to the water, perfect for capturing the spray of the water curtain at eye level. You can take a boat round-trip between the two banks, or walk across the pedestrian path next to the upstream railway bridge to visit the other side, capturing the scenery from different angles.Neuhausen am Rheinfall · 3.8 km from Schaffhausen

Located on the top of a beautiful vineyard, the Minoan Castle is a round castle built in the 16th century, with a 360-degree view of the city from the top of the castle. The hill on which the castle is located is steep and is a well-guarded position. It is said that a watch tower was built here in the 14th century. The bells from the tower can be heard every night at the designated time, a custom that continues in the Middle Ages, when the gates were closed every time the bells rang. Walking up the stairs of the tower, it is a roof with a diameter of 50 meters, which was turned into a viewing square. Minoan Castle is not only a good place for sightseeing, but also a symbol of the town that is loved by the citizens. It is often used as a festival square and a concert hall for public entertainment.Schaffhausen · 1.2 km from downtown

Piazza del Duomo is located in the center of Milan, surrounded by many important buildings, including the landmark of Milan, the cathedral. The square gradually developed with the construction of the cathedral and was named after it. In the center of the square stands the equestrian bronze statue of Vittorio Emanuele II, the first king of the Kingdom of Italy. Around the square, there are also a series of important buildings such as the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II, the neoclassical-style royal palace, and the cathedral museum. On the square, you can see flocks of leisurely strolling pigeons, and sometimes in the evening, you may encounter impromptu street performances. The area near the square is home to many shopping malls, boutiques, and high-end restaurants, making it a well-known leisure and shopping district in Milan.Italy · Milan

Bahnhofstrasse

4.8/5
445 reviews
Bahnhofstrasse is located on the west side of the Limmat, starting from Station Square in front of Zurich Main Station in the north and ending at Buerkliplatz on the shores of Lake Zurich in the south, with a total length of approx. 1.4 km. This street is actually quite young: it was only after Zurich demolished its old city walls and filled in the moat in the 1860s that this straight street was opened on the low-lying land formerly known as "Frog Ditch." Today, it is often compared to New York's Fifth Avenue and has long been ranked among the most expensive shopping streets in Europe, serving as a city landmark for Zurich. It also has a famous nickname—the "Wall Street of Switzerland." Zurich is an internationally renowned financial city, with banks and financial institutions clustered along the street; the headquarters of UBS Group (UBS) is located next to Paradeplatz along the way. Even more intriguing is the long-standing rumor that many banks store their gold reserves in underground vaults beneath the street. Switzerland has also long been one of the world's major hubs for gold trading, so it's no wonder some call it the "Golden Avenue." Thinking about the vaults that might be buried beneath your feet while strolling along is quite a fascinating experience.Zurich · 38.2 km from Schaffhausen

Zurich Old Town

Zurich Old Town straddles both banks of the Limmat and serves as the city's historic core. Compared to the modern urban landscape of riverside banks and office buildings, it still retains the layout of a medieval town: winding cobblestone alleys, scattered old houses, guild halls, and street fountains. Standing on the riverbank, you can see the Old Town's three iconic churches at a glance—the twin-towered Grossmunster, St. Peter's Church, which features a clock face nearly 9m in diameter, and Fraumunster, famous for its Chagall stained-glass windows. Zurich Old Town is best explored on foot. Augustinergasse is lined with old houses featuring painted bay windows and vintage signs, making it one of the most recognizable alleys in the Old Town. For a panoramic view, head up to Lindenhof Hill; this former Roman castle site is now a vantage point for overlooking the Old Town's rooftops and the Limmat. Many old buildings have been converted into trendy restaurants, bars, and cafes, with bookstores and gift shops tucked away in the deep alleys. The Niederdorf area is a bustling shopping district by day, and after dark, its restaurants and bars light up, so it never feels repetitive even if you stroll from the afternoon well into the night.Zurich · 37.9 km from Schaffhausen
Neuschwanstein Castle

Neuschwanstein Castle

9.6
4.5/5
1.6k reviews
Neuschwanstein Castle is located in the foothills of the Alps in Bavaria, Germany, near the Austrian border and not far from the small town of Füssen. Built by King Ludwig II of Bavaria as a tribute to composer Wagner and inspired by the legend of the "Swan Knight" Lohengrin, construction began in 1869. Its fairy-tale appearance—white walls, blue domes, and scattered spires—served as the inspiration for Disney's Sleeping Beauty Castle. It is perennially regarded as Germany's tourism icon. The castle interior was originally planned to have over 200 rooms, but by the time of the king's death in 1886, only a dozen had been completed, each exquisitely crafted. The throne hall's dome is painted with a star-studded blue night sky, while the floor features mosaic patterns of flora and fauna, with a chandelier modeled after a Byzantine crown hanging high above. The Gothic double bed in the king's bedroom took over four years to carve by more than a dozen sculptors. The relatively large singers' hall in the castle, adorned with murals of "Lohengrin" and "Parsifal," was modeled after the Wartburg singers' hall and still hosts concerts every September. Swan motifs are nearly omnipresent, appearing in murals, door handles, and washstands. Interestingly, this medieval-inspired castle was already equipped with telephones, central heating, hot water, and automatic flushing toilets at the time, making it remarkably advanced for its era. To capture the classic postcard-perfect shot, head to Marienbrücke. This pedestrian bridge, suspended over the Pöllat Gorge, faces the southern facade of the castle and is not far from the bus drop-off point. It gets crowded in the afternoon, so an early visit is recommended. You can take the shuttle bus, a horse-drawn carriage, or hike up the mountain. The hiking route offers a bird's-eye view of the castle, and along the way, you can also see the yellow Hohenschwangau Castle, the old royal palace on the opposite hill. The castle's ending carries a touch of tragedy: Ludwig II built it with his private funds and loans, facing strong opposition from his ministers. On a late night in June 1886, he was arrested in his castle bedroom and mysteriously died days later by Lake Starnberg. Seven weeks later, the castle opened to the public. Today, visiting the interior requires following a guide, and photography is prohibited inside. Live guides provide commentary in English or German, while an audio guide is available for Chinese. Visitor guide To the castle There are three ways to reach the castle: taking the shuttle bus, riding a carriage, or going on foot. Most people choose to take the shuttle bus, then walk a short distance to Neuschwanstein Castle, where there is a viewing platform to overlook another castle—Hohenschwangau. You can also reach the castle by carriage, where you can enjoy picturesque scenery along the way, and the witty carriage driver will share legendary stories that happened here. After disembarking, it's just a short walk to the castle entrance. If you don't want to wait in line for the shuttle bus or prefer outdoor activities, you can also hike to Neuschwanstein Castle. Along the way, you can capture an aerial view of the castle, and there are relatively fewer travelers. Take a postcard-perfect photo of the castle Marienbrücke (Mary's Bridge) is located near the terminal stop of the uphill bus. This 100 m-high bridge spans between two cliffs, with its floor made of wooden planks that slightly bounce when stepped on. Here, you can capture the famous postcard-perfect shot of Neuschwanstein Castle. If you arrive early before your scheduled visit time, you can first head to Marienbrücke to photograph the beautiful view of Neuschwanstein Castle, as the bridge gets overcrowded after noon. Guided tour To visit the castle interior, you must follow the official guide. The guide provides services in English and German. You can also choose to use an audio guide (available in Chinese). After the visit, you can take a short break at the café inside the castle.Germany · Schwangau

Walking in the old town center of Stein, you will always be attracted by the paintings on the walls. This is a fresco painted by a special process, a very durable mural painting. First, put plaster on the wall. When the plaster is not dry, use natural paint to paint on the wall. When the plaster on the wall is completely dry, the painting will be organically integrated with the wall, and the paint will not fall off. , not easy to fade. Stein has many famous frescoes, such as: the fresco of the sun, the fresco was painted in 1900, and the paintings are the ancient Greek philosopher Diogens and Alexander the Great. The White Eagle Hotel, with frescoes painted in 1520-1530, colorful. Crown fresco, fresco painted in 1734. And so on, these frescoes have added a lot of style to the city.Stein am Rhein · 17.3 km from Schaffhausen

This lesser-known attraction is worth a visit. The area isn't large, but it's incredibly popular. The view up close is quite breathtaking. Although I didn't get to climb to the national flag, being halfway up the mountain already gave me a real sense of its unstoppable, surging power. It's a bit chilly in autumn, so dress warmly and be sure to bring waterproof clothing.

The landmark of Schaffhausen, a very beautiful castle, is round in shape and built on a hill. There are straight steps going up and down, which clearly reflect the meaning of a military fortress. It feels great to overlook the city from the top.

We choose the horse carriage ride up, it was €8 a person. It took around 20 minutes and we enjoyed the forest view. Make sure to arrive and park at least an hour early. The entrance time is exact to every 5 minutes for crowd control. The entrance ticket includes an audio set and takes around 30 minutes. You are moved thru the rooms rather quickly. There are free lockers at information at the entrance area if needed. No pictures can be taken during the tour. **not handicapped friendly ** must be able to walk for 2-3 hours and climb up and down many flights of stairs. There are no elevators. We planned to walk down but it began to rain. So we took the horse carriage again -/€4/person.

Stein am Rhein is known as the gem on the Rhine. It is one of the most medieval cities in Switzerland. It is located in the northeast of Switzerland, close to the borders of Germany and Austria. Its full name is Stein am Rhein. The biggest attraction of Stein am Rhein is the buildings here. The youngest is already hundreds of years old, but each one is well preserved. It is called the gem on the Rhine and is listed as a World Cultural Heritage by UNESCO. The town is not large, with only one main street, but the exquisite murals on the exterior walls of traditional houses here attract countless tourists every year. Coming to the town of Stein am Rhein, it feels like being in a fairy tale world, because medieval-style buildings can be seen everywhere, as well as various murals. Each house has beautiful murals, reliefs and bay window decorations. The colorful old buildings connected to each other are like a long scroll being unfolded, which is extremely exquisite. The whole city is like a living medieval art gallery. Walking in the narrow alleys, the Rhine River flows through, making people intoxicated. The Rhine Bridge is also a good place to enjoy the town of Stein and the Rhine River, and you can also see the Hohenlingen Castle on the top of the mountain in the distance. It is highly recommended to drive to visit the town of Stein. You can park your car in the parking lot outside the clock tower gate (Zeitturm) in the old town of Stein. From 10 am to 18 pm, it is charged CHF1.5 per hour, and it is free after 18 pm. I am Shun Shi Clockwise, an older young man who loves traveling, photography, and punching in. Although I am not a professional traveler, traveling has become a compulsory course in my life and an indispensable part of my life. I love to take pictures casually and share my travel experience. If you think my notes are helpful to you, please give me a like to encourage me.
