Mt Bromo is an active volcano in eastern Java, Indonesia, part of the Tengger volcanic complex, with an elevation of approx. 2,329 m. It stands in the center of the ancient Tengger caldera, which is approx. 10 km in diameter, surrounded by a vast, sparsely vegetated Sea of Sand covered in volcanic ash. The crater is approx. 800 m long from north to south, approx. 600 m wide from east to west, and approx. 247 m deep. It emits white sulfurous smoke year-round and is the currently active volcano within the Tengger volcanic complex. Mt Bromo offers a classic experience: heading to a viewpoint on the ridge in the early morning to watch the sunrise. As the morning light gradually colors the Sea of Sand, the white smoke rising from the crater stands out against the morning glow. The cone of Mount Semeru Volcano in the distance and the perfectly conical Mount Batok nearby create a distinct skyline, with a sea of clouds rolling beneath your feet. After sunrise, visitors typically take a 4WD jeep across the black Sea of Sand, arrive at the foot of the volcano, and climb the stairs to the crater's edge to experience the smoking crater and the strong scent of sulfur up close. You can also ride a horse across the Sea of Sand, passing the Poten Hindu Temple in the center—the spiritual center for the local Tenggerese Hindus. The volcano is also a sacred site for the Tenggerese people. Every year, devotees hold the Yadnya Kasada festival, throwing offerings such as fruit, flowers, and livestock into the crater to express gratitude to the mountain gods. This tradition has continued for centuries, making Mt Bromo not only a natural wonder but also a place of unique cultural significance.Tosari · 21.1 km from Senduro

Mount Semeru Volcano

Mount Semeru Volcano is located inBromo Tengger Semeru National Parkand has an elevation of 3,676 m. Also known as Mahameru, its name is derived from Mount Meru in Indian mythology, and it holds a special place in the hearts of the local people. As a permanently active stratovolcano, it is situated in a subduction zone; the summit crater is constantly active, frequently emitting plumes of gray-white smoke. Climbing Mount Semeru Volcano is a classic long-distance hike on Java. Most routes start from Ranu Pani village, reaching the alpine lake Ranu Kumbolo after several hours of trekking. In the early morning, the sun rises slowly from between the valleys, and morning mist floats on the lake surface; the lakeside is a common camping spot. Continuing upward, you can rest at Kalimati Camp, then set off in the dark in the early morning to summit, reaching the peak of Mahameru just in time for sunrise to watch the morning light spread across the mountains beneath your feet. This route is quite strenuous: the altitude is high, early morning temperatures are low, and the sections for summiting and descending are steep. The loose volcanic ash and sand can be slippery, so you should be especially careful to slow your pace when descending. If you have limited time or energy, camping by the lake to wait for the sunrise is also a choice for many hikers.Pasrujambe · 17.9 km from Senduro

Tumpak Sewu Waterfall

Tumpak Sewu Waterfall is located in the forests on the border between the Lumajang and Malang regencies. Locals call it "Tumpak Sewu," which means "a thousand waterfalls" in Javanese. The Glidik River, which originates from Mount Semeru Volcano, reaches the cliff edge and then scatters and falls along a nearly semicircular cliff face. Dozens of water curtains cascade down the same cliff face, with a drop of approx. 120 m. From a distance, it looks like a single white water curtain hanging at the foot of the volcano. There are generally two ways to visit: first, stand on the cliff-top viewing platform to take in the panoramic view—in the early morning, thin mist often rises in the mountains, and the water flow gradually appears in the mist, with the Mount Semeru Volcano, at an altitude of over 3,000 m, often seen in the same frame as the entire water curtain; second, walk down to the valley floor along bamboo ladders and trails. Standing at the foot of the waterfall, you can hear the roaring water and feel the mist on your face. Looking up, you can clearly see each stream of water crashing into the pool. If you have enough energy, the nearby Tetes Cave Waterfall is often visited along with it.Pronojiwo · 24.6 km from Senduro

Penanjakan Bromo

5.1
Penanjakan Bromo is situated on a ridge at the edge of the Tengger caldera at an elevation of approx. 2,770 m. Located within Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park, it is the place to watch the sunrise over Mt Bromo. The viewpoint faces the volcanic complex: white smoke constantly rises from theMt Bromo crater, the perfectly conical Mount Batok stands side-by-side with it, and in the distance, Mount Semeru Volcano reveals a towering silhouette in the morning light. At the foot of the three volcanoes lies a volcanic ash plain known as the "Sea of Sand". Around sunrise, the sky shifts from blue to golden, and the layers of the mountain shadows and the Sea of Sand change accordingly. To watch the sunrise, you need to arrive before dawn. The standard route is to take a 4WD jeep up the winding mountain road at night, then walk up a short flight of stairs to the viewing platform after getting off. Temperatures at the summit are very low in the early morning, and it feels even colder due to the wind, so a thick jacket, gloves, and a hat are almost essential. After sunrise, most people take a jeep down to the Sea of Sand and then climb to the edge of the Mt Bromo crater for a close-up view, combining the panoramic view from above with a close-up of the crater into a complete itinerary.Puspo · 24.5 km from Senduro

Hiking Mount Bromo at dawn is a pilgrimage into the surreal. The walk across the vast, ashen Sea of Sand toward the steaming crater feels otherworldly. The sight of the sun igniting the sky behind the Tengger caldera is pure, unforgettable magic.Crucial Tips: Start in pitch dark from Penanjakan for the iconic sunrise viewpoint. Dress for near-freezing pre-dawn temperatures that turn warm after sunrise. Wear a mask and sturdy, closed shoes for the deep volcanic ash. Hire a local guide for the safest route through the shifting sands. This raw, elemental landscape demands respect and rewards it profoundly.

This is probably one of the most beautiful waterfalls in Indonesia. There’s a photo spot before you decent where you can take photos of the waterfalls from eye level. After taking photos here, you can start to decent to the bottom where you can take epic photos of yourself with the waterfalls. After that, proceed to another smaller waterfalls and cave nearby before climbing back up to the carpark. Definitely a place not to be missed when in East Java.
