Skaftafell

Skaftafellis located in southeastern Iceland. The park features a combination of glaciers, volcanoes, canyons, birch forests, and waterfalls, with a rare green valley nestled between the ice cap and the black sand plains, offering rich, layered views. The park's signature view is Svartifoss, surrounded by cliffs of neatly arranged black hexagonal basalt columns, with slender white streams of water cascading between them, creating a striking black-and-white contrast. This columnar basalt formation has inspired the design of many buildings in Iceland. The trail system here is well-developed; the route to Svartifoss is gentle and easy to walk, while another scenic trail leads to the tongue of the Skaftafell glacier, allowing for a close-up view of the blue-and-white ice. Those with more energy can challenge themselves on higher ridge trails or join a guided glacier hike.Hornafjordur · 6.1 km from Skaftafell

Black Waterfall, which means "black waterfall", is located in the Skaftafell area of Vatnajökull National Park in Iceland and is famous for its unique basalt column waterfall landscape. Clear water cascades down from between dozens of neat, black hexagonal basalt columns, creating a sharp visual contrast between the white water curtain and the pitch-black rock columns, with a roaring sound that is quite spectacular. The basalt columns are a columnar jointing landform formed by the slow cooling and contraction of large-scale lava flows. This unique structure has inspired the design of many well-known buildings in Iceland, including Hallgrimskirkja. Visiting this waterfall amidst the green mountains and valleys is one of the classic hiking experiences for exploring the natural landscape of Skaftafell.Hornafjordur · 1.7 km from Skaftafell

Blue Ice Cave

The Blue Ice Cave is a natural ice cave that forms under Iceland's Vatnajökull Glacier every winter, serving as a unique and rare natural view during the Icelandic winter. The color and shape of the ice cave are ever-changing. Not only does the shape differ from year to year, but even within a single day, it can display varying shades of blue depending on the weather and light, making every cave one-of-a-kind. This mysterious blue color comes from the ice layer's special filtering and reflection of light: the denser the ice, the more thoroughly it absorbs red light, resulting in a deeper and purer blue. Sunlight refracts through the ice into the cave, illuminating the interior with a dreamlike, blue-purple view.Hornafjordur · 40 km from Skaftafell
Diamond Beach

Diamond Beach

4.9/5
17 reviews
Diamond Beach is located in southeastern Iceland, right next to the Glacier lagoon. The ice blocks in the Glacier lagoon originate from the Vatnajökull glacier. After breaking off, they drift into the Glacier lagoon and are then washed onto the black sand beach by the tide, forming ice blocks of various sizes and shapes. Some are as clear and transparent as glass, some are milky white, and others display a deep blue color due to long-term compression of the ice layers. Under the light, these ice blocks look like scattered diamonds, which is how Diamond Beach got its name. The strong contrast between the black volcanic sand and the colorful ice blocks creates a visually striking view, and because the ice blocks constantly washing ashore vary in shape, every visit offers a different experience. Occasionally, you can see harbor seals climbing onto the ice blocks to rest, adding vitality to this magnificent glacial landscape.Hornafjordur · 40.2 km from Skaftafell

Glacier lagoon

Glacier lagoon is located at the southern end of the Vatnajökull glacier. After the glacier began to retreat in the late 19th century, water gradually accumulated here to form a lake. Since then, as the glacier has continued to melt, the lake surface has kept expanding and is still growing and changing today. The lake water is a deep blue-green, and countless ice blocks of various sizes that have calved from the glacier's edge float on the surface. Their colors range from milky white to bright blue, with some ice bodies emitting a deep blue glow from within, presenting ever-changing appearances under different lighting conditions. Taking an amphibious boat to navigate through the floating ice is a unique way to tour the area. The boat enters the lake from the beach, allowing visitors to get a close-up view of the massive ice wall and the diverse shapes of the floating ice. Some ice blocks drift from the lake into the Atlantic Ocean, only to be washed up by the tide onto the black sand beach near the lake's mouth. Large patches of ice fragments scattered across the black sand, together with the floating ice on the lake, create an unforgettable scene.Hornafjordur · 38.1 km from Skaftafell

Svínafellsjökull Glacier is an outlet glacier of Vatnajökull, the largest ice cap in Europe, and is located within Vatnajökull National Park. The glacier is covered with deep crevasses and ice cliffs of varying heights, with natural ice sculptures of diverse shapes presenting a magnificent sight in shades of blue and white. This glacier is one of the filming locations for the "Beyond the Wall" scenes in the American TV series Game of Thrones. It is also known as the "Hollywood Glacier" and has appeared in several major productions, including Interstellar and Batman Begins. The blue ice layers contain clearly visible streaks of volcanic ash, which are natural records left in the glacier's geology by past volcanic eruptions.Hornafjordur · 6 km from Skaftafell

The Blue Lagoon is located in Grindavik on the Reykjanes Peninsula in southwestern Iceland. It is a geothermal hot spring formed by volcanic lava. The water temperature is about 37-39 degrees Celsius. The lake water is rich in minerals such as silicon and sulfur, making it appear faint blue. Hot spring experience The Blue Lagoon has now become a symbol of Iceland. Many people who come to Iceland will choose to take a good bath here. Volcanic mud mask Don't forget to apply some silica mud on your face as a mask when taking a hot spring bath. The silica mud here is volcanic mud, which contains many minerals. Sauna In addition, you can also go to the sauna on the shore to steam for a while, and then come out to continue soaking. If it snows, it feels very unusual to immerse your body in warm water and look up at the white snow flying all over the sky.Iceland · Grindavik

Vatnajökull National Park

Vatnajökull National Park is located in southeastern Iceland. Centered on the ice cap of the same name, the park covers more than one-tenth of Iceland's land area. The Vatnajökull ice cap has an average thickness of nearly 400 m. Beneath the thick ice lie several active volcanoes, including Grímsvötn and Bárðarbunga. Geothermal heat generated by volcanic activity constantly acts on the base of the glacier. Here, "ice and fire" is not just a literary metaphor, but a geological process that plays out day after day—volcanic eruptions can even trigger glacial floods, with rushing meltwater carrying ice blocks downstream. The park encompasses a rich variety of landscapes, offering diverse activities such as hiking, glacier viewing, and caving. Every winter, blue ice caves naturally form at the edge of the glacier, with the deep blue ice walls displaying dreamlike colors as light penetrates them. Vatnajökull is also a filming location for the "Beyond the Wall" scenes in Game of Thrones. Standing on the vast ice field, visitors feel as small as dust in the boundless expanse, and that raw, cold natural power truly resonates with the atmosphere of the North in the show.Thingeyjarsveit · 85.9 km from Skaftafell

Seljalandsfoss

Seljalandsfoss has a drop of approx. 60m, with water sourced from glacial meltwater. The waterfall's unique feature is a natural recessed path at the base of the cliff, where visitors can walk behind the water curtain to experience the roar of the cascading water and the surrounding mist up close. Looking out from behind the curtain, the view of the distant fields and horizon through the splashing water offers a unique and picturesque perspective, making it a favorite spot for photography enthusiasts. Sunset is an ideal time to capture the view from behind the curtain, as the warm light of the setting sun shines through the water from the west, creating exceptionally rich layers of light and shadow. When walking along the path, be mindful of the slippery rocks underfoot. The dense mist can also wet your clothing and electronic devices, so it is necessary to prepare waterproof gear in advance.Iceland · Rangarthing eystra

Skaftafell Glacier National Park is a very large park in Iceland. Although it was not covered with ice everywhere when I came here, the scenery here is still so beautiful and spectacular!

Like falling diamonds from stars, they scatter on the icy beach. This cool beach is like nature's canvas, covered with sparkling diamonds, reflecting the dazzling light, just like the starry sky at night, so beautiful that people are intoxicated by this picturesque scenery.

"Glacier Lake" The lake is connected to the glacier, and the flow speed and flow are very large. Connecting the shore of the lake is the famous "Diamond Beach" Ice fragments will fall from the glacier, and then be washed ashore by wolves. The fragments of ice washed up on the beach will sparkle when viewed from a distance, just like diamonds sprinkled on the earth, which is a well-deserved reputation. For "Diamond Beach". But because it was spring, (it was too warm😅), there was no diamond ice on the beach as mentioned in the travel book.

This is not the Svina "mountain" glacier, but the Svina "glacier tongue". The glacier tongue is the end of the glacier, spreading from the high altitude to the ice-free valley, and finally turning into a river into the sea, or melting into a lake and seeping into the ground. The Svina Glacier Tongue Lake belongs to the second type. Watching the glacier by the lake is a different world.

Seljalandsfoss is the most famous waterfall in Iceland and one of the most popular natural attractions. There is a small path near the waterfall. Walking along the path to the side and back of the waterfall, the scenery is very spectacular. Be sure to wear waterproof clothes, otherwise you will get wet.
