The Grass Skyline, nicknamed “China's Route 66,” passes many beautiful sights like grassland, windmills, terraced farm fields, and rock cliffs. Driving along the road is a good choice for a weekend sightseeing trip in the vicinity of Beijing. The Grass Skyline's west end begins at Yehu (“Wild Fox”) Ridge on the south side of the Zhangbei County seat and continues east to Huapi Ridge in Chongli County. The land around the Skyline is covered in wildflowers in the summertime and becomes a sea of gold in the autumn. You can enter from either the Yehu Ridge or Huapi Ridge side, and the entire stretch of road is a beautiful drive. Since it climbs a lot, you'll often see the road appear to end at the horizon, which is how it got the name “skyline.” You can pull over anywhere to get out of the car and take beautiful photographs.Zhangbei · 18.3 km from downtown

The Bashang Grasslands are situated in Zhangbei County near Zhangjiakou. Consisting of the Zhongdu and Anguli grasslands, the area was used as a fall hunting ground by Qing dynasty emperors. June to September is the high season, when visitors can drive through the park and enjoy magnificent views over the expansive grasslands. The nights here are cool, therefore a jacket is recommended. Originally built during the Yuan dynasty (1279-1368), Nuanquan Ancient Town holds many ancient-style structures that are perfect for photographing. Compared to certain other ancient towns that have become popular via the Internet, Nuanquan appears simpler and more tranquil, and many locals reside within the town. The town is not particularly large but has an ancient west wall (an ancient gate tower) and several large courtyard complexes open to visitors. The “Make Treeflower Fungus” show is a famous event here. The show is a unique traditional festival light show with over 300 years of history. It involves villagers heating iron to 1500˚°C to become molten iron and then splashing it against the city wall to create a majestic scene of “fire trees and silver flowers” that is truly stunning.Yu County · 13.7 km from downtown

Weizhou Ancient City is located on a platform on the south bank of Huliu River. At present, the south and east walls of Weizhou Ancient City have been completely demolished. The remaining well-preserved are the north wall and the northern section of the west wall, which is about 1,600 meters long. The east and west gates have been destroyed, and only the south gate remains. Wanshan Tower and Wenchang Pavilion in the city were restored and rebuilt in 1998. The east, west and south sides of the moat basically exist, and the stone bridge outside the three gates still exists. According to the Records of Weizhou, the ancient city of Weizhou is seven li and thirteen steps in circumference, with a wall three feet and five feet high, three city gate towers, and four corner towers. The tower is Jingyang Tower, the south gate is Jingxian Gate, the tower is Wanshan Tower, the west gate is Qingyuan Gate, and the tower is Guangyun Tower. There are tall and majestic urn cities outside the three gates. The moat is connected to the inner city by a suspension bridge. Outside the city is a moat more than three feet deep and seven feet wide. The Weizhou city is irregular in shape, wide in the south and narrow in the north, with many bends on the east and west sides. There is only the east, west, and south gates in the city, but no north gate, and the Jade Emperor Pavilion is built on the north city wall. The four main streets in the city are east, west, south, and north, forming an architectural pattern with Wenchang Pavilion (Drum Tower) and the south gate (Wanshan Tower) symmetrical, and the north-south streets as the central axis. Due to historical reasons, the ancient city of Weizhou suffered some damage, but the style of the ancient city has remained basically unchanged. In addition, there are many government offices, temples, pavilions and houses in the ancient city, and the legacy of the ancient cities of Ming and Qing dynasties is still there. In the history of Weizhou, Han culture was the mainstream. However, the ancient city's form was contrary to the strict "ritual system" of the traditional Han nationality: it was square and dignified, with clear longitude and latitude, and symmetrical planning along the central axis, which is the characteristic of Weizhou ancient city.Yu County · 1.6 km from downtown

Zhangjiakou Fort, commonly known as Fortress, also called Xiabao, is the birthplace of Zhangjiakou urban area and the mother body of Zhangjiakou. It is a historical witness of the gradual growth and prosperity of Zhangyuan land after 580 years of vicissitudes.        Zhangjiakou Fort was first built in the fourth year of Ming Xuande (1429 AD). It was originally a military fort for stationing troops. It is an important part of the Xuanfu defense system of the nine frontiers of the Great Wall in Ming Dynasty. Because it has never been lost in a war, it is known as the "Martial City" in the northern border. With the implementation of the Ming Longqing Peace Agreement's policy of opening up the border, Zhangjiakou was opened as a trading place between Mongolians and Han people, and the once-prosperous "Tea-Horse Trade" emerged. It gradually developed into the Zhangku Trade Road, a larger trade route connecting China, Mongolia and Russia during the Ming and Qing Dynasties. It is also famous as a northern land commercial port for its important position as a trade distribution center.              Zhangjiakou Fort had a complete defense system, and many wealthy businessmen bought houses and land here, opened shops, and made their fortunes. Private residences, residential houses, and streets of the wealthy businessmen were gradually formed. More than half of the 44 foreign trading companies and 42 domestic money houses and bill shops operating in Zhangjiakou at that time were located in Zhangjiakou Fort. Wucheng Street in the east of the fort was named after Wucheng because it is close to Wucheng. It is the only street in the country named after Wucheng. It is the junction of commercial culture and military culture of this important border town.              The current Zhangjiakou Fort still completely preserves the architectural layout of ten streets and ten alleys formed in the late Qing Dynasty and early Republic of China. There are 478 ancient courtyards from the Ming and Qing Dynasties. After a series of protective development, it is now used as a tourist attraction. The attractions to visit include Wenchang Pavilion, Yuhuang Pavilion, Xiaobeimen, temples, Luncai Academy, Ding General's Mansion, Chahar Provincial Finance Department, Li Yuxi's Residence, Chang Wanda's Residence, etc.Zhangjiakou · 5.9 km from downtown

Guanting Reservoir is located in Zhangjiakou City, Hebei Province and Yanqing County, Beijing. It is the first large-scale reservoir built after the founding of New China. The main water flow of Guanting Reservoir is the Yongding River in Huailai, Hebei Province, which has played a huge role in flood control, irrigation and power generation. . Guanting Reservoir used to be one of Beijing's main water sources. In the late 1980s, the water in the reservoir area was seriously polluted, and the water quality continued to deteriorate in the 1990s. In 1997, the reservoir was forced to withdraw from the urban drinking water system. Gardens have been built along the Guanting Reservoir, which is a scenic spot near Beijing. Guanting Lake is connected to many surrounding tourist attractions. It is only more than 70 kilometers away from Beijing Deshengmen in the south, 7 kilometers away from the famous Badaling of the Great Wall at home and abroad, and 8 kilometers away from Longqing Gorge in Yanqing in the east. Guanting Reservoir is comparable in size to Miyun Reservoir. It is sandwiched between two mountains. The water quality is good and the water surface is open. On the south bank side, there are steep rocky shores and delicate sandy beaches. In addition, various fruits with high sugar content are abundant on the nearby sandy land, as well as convenient transportation. For Beijingers, it is really a good place for leisure and vacation around.Huailai · 18.9 km from downtown

Taiwu Town is easily accessible from Beijing by high-speed rail. From Qinghe Station to Taizicheng Station, there are free shuttle buses available right outside the stations, taking about 10 minutes to reach various stops within the town. Families without cars have no problem. The town was already a bit chilly during the National Day holiday. There are many hiking trails available. We chose cable car number 4 to the top of the mountain, returned to the transfer station, and began hiking Rainbow Valley G3 from the starting point. The entire trail is 2.33 kilometers long with 15 checkpoints. It winds through forests along a wavy route, and we even encountered some squirrels – quite interesting! We continued until we reached the junction with the G4 chipmunk route, which is also the starting point for the mountain bikes. If you get tired here, you can ride down for 150 yuan. There are many curves, and children up to 12 years old can ride independently. If you choose to continue hiking, take the chipmunk route downhill. Don't stay on the paved road the whole way; after a section of paved road, turn into the pine forest path – that's the correct chipmunk route. Continue until you reach the red wooden bridge, then return to the paved road downhill to the starting point of cable car number 9, Nanshanli Hotel, Paston Hotel, and the end point. Rainbow Valley G3 + Chipmunk G4 is a 6km route that takes 2.5 hours. There are very few uphill sections, making it a fun and engaging route. It's not particularly difficult.

It's not bad, but you can't pick up your tickets in advance; you have to go on the day of the trip. I didn't know that if I picked up my tickets a day in advance, they would work at Wanlong Shopping Center, but not at Genting Highlands. I had to go back to Wanlong Shopping Center to get a new card…

Mei Jie's 71st day of traveling in China, Zhangjiakou Zhangbei Bashang Grassland Heavenly Road At the junction of Zhangbei County and Chongli District in Zhangjiakou, there is a winding asphalt road of more than 100 kilometers. It stretches across the mountains with the ups and downs of the mountains. The scenery on both sides of the road is beautiful, with rivers, mountains, meadows and terraces, like a hundred-mile painting! The blue sky connects with it, and the white clouds echo with it, just like walking on the road to heaven! The most suitable season for Bashang Grassland is from the end of June to the end of September. The air on the grassland is pure, there is little pollution, and it is also cool in summer. I was unlucky today. It was raining intermittently on Bashang. The sky was always overcast, and occasionally the sun poured down through the clouds, which was a different taste. I still felt cool wearing long sleeves, it is worthy of being a summer resort~

I heard it's the birthplace of the "Iron Flower" performance, with over 300 years of history, so I went to see it. Compared to other live performances in scenic areas across the country, the show wasn't particularly exciting. All four sections of the "Iron Flower" performance were the same, lacking variation and originality compared to other attractions. However, if you haven't seen it before, it's still worth checking out.

Weizhou Ancient City, also known as Rabbit City or Iron City, is located in Weixian County, Zhangjiakou City, Hebei Province. If you have time, I recommend visiting the areas surrounding Beijing. Zhangjiakou is a good option. Among its many attractions, Zhangjiakou Fort is a relatively pristine place. It's an ancient town with many residents, so it's not overly commercialized, although the scenery isn't particularly stunning.
