Since graduating, I’ve been trying to travel more without stressing over detailed itineraries. I spent a day in Valencia just walking around the old town to see the historical buildings. It’s about a 5km walk in total, taking around 5 hours. Here is how my day went:
09:00 - Started at Torres de Serranos. It’s an old Gothic stone gate. Entry was only 2€, and the view from the top is great.
09:50 - Wandered into Barrio del Carmen. I didn't have a map, just walked through the narrow alleys. There are some old walls and street art mixed together.
11. 00 - Reached Plaza de la Reina. The Valencia Cathedral is here. The architecture is interesting because it’s a mix of different eras. Entry was 8€.
12. 10 - Walked over to Plaza de la Virgen. The fountain and the pink-domed basilica look very peaceful together.
12. 40 - Visited the Silk Exchange (Lonja de la Seda). Tickets were 2€. The inside has these huge spiral stone columns that look like palm trees. It was definitely worth the entry fee.
13. 30 - Right across the street is the Central Market (Mercado Central). It is a beautiful modern-style building with colored glass, but it closes early at 15:00, so you have to be quick.
14. 30 - Sat down for a late lunch and tried some local Horchata (a sweet nut milk drink), which was really refreshing after walking in the sun.
17:00 - Ended my walk at Plaza del Ayuntamiento, the main city hall square.
If you visit, make sure to wear very flat, comfortable shoes because of the cobblestone streets. I really liked the relaxed pace of this city. I would definitely come back again.
