First time visiting Wenzhou Dongtou colorful fishing village? Non-local travelers beware ⚠️
Planning to visit Wenzhou Dongtou colorful fishing village but still confused after reading many guides? I’ve been there 3 times to figure out the best way to enjoy it and put together this practical guide. Avoid booking accommodation blindly or buying tickets on site. Planning ahead will save you a lot of time and effort.
🕘【Opening hours】: Open all day. Recommended visit duration is 2–3 hours. The best times to visit are before 9 AM or after 4 PM. I personally found these times less crowded, making photos easier without people in the background. Avoid long visits at noon due to strong sunlight.
💴【Ticket prices】: The core fishing village area is free to enter. The popular village viewing platform charges 10 yuan per person, which most visitors choose. The small marine experience center charges 25 yuan per person, with slight price increases on holidays. Children under 1.2 meters tall and seniors over 70 years old enter free. Students with valid ID get half-price tickets.
⛺【Activities】:
· Walk along the coastal colorful trail: The path along the coastline is lined with pastel-colored fishermen’s houses covered in ocean-themed murals. I found the seaside side especially great for photos.
· View from Banpingshan observation deck: From the deck, you can overlook the entire colorful fishing village and the East China Sea coastline. On sunny days, you’ll see layers of blue-green water. On cloudy days, the village has a dreamy atmosphere.
· Tide pooling at the fishing harbor: At low tide, you can collect small shells and crabs on the mudflats. Last time, I gathered half a basket of clams. Bring small tools in advance so you don’t come back empty-handed.
· Eat seafood at the harbor pier: There are many local fishermen’s stalls by the pier selling fresh seafood caught that day. Prices are much cheaper than in the city.
🚌【Transportation tips】:
Driving is the most convenient way. It takes about 1 hour from downtown Wenzhou. There is free public parking in the village. On busy weekends after 10 AM, parking spaces get tight, so arriving early is recommended. By public transport, take bus 151 from Wenzhou train station directly to Dongtou bus station, then transfer to Dongtou bus 1 and get off at Dong’ao village stop, which is the fishing village entrance.
👉【Itinerary】:
Depart downtown Wenzhou at 8 AM → arrive at colorful fishing village entrance at 9 AM, stroll and take photos along the coastal trail → 10:30 AM climb the observation deck for a full village view → 12 PM have seafood lunch at the harbor pier → 2 PM tide pooling after low tide → 4 PM return trip. Parking and popular guesthouses are very limited during peak season, so book parking and accommodation in advance to avoid delays.
🧡【Preparation】:
No special documents needed, just bring your ID card. For outfits, light-colored simple dresses work best for photos with the colorful walls. To capture wide shots without people, come early when the light is soft and not harsh. The sea breeze is strong and UV rays are intense, so bring sunscreen and a light jacket. Wear old non-slip shoes for tide pooling to avoid slipping in the mud.
