What is the JR Rail Pass?

The Japan Rail (JR) Pass is a single transport ticket that allows nationwide travel on Japan’s rail network, including high-speed Shinkansen (bullet train) lines. You can choose between three validity periods: 1, 2, or 3 weeks for nationwide Pass. It is aimed exclusively at tourists visiting Japan, and the JR travel pass allows passengers to take unlimited rides on Japanese trains and make free seat reservations for ultimate peace of mind when exploring Japan.

Nationwide vs Regional JR Passes

In addition to the famous nationwide JR Pass, you can also opt for more location-specific regional passes. While nationwide passes may be the right choice when traveling long distances, a regional pass can save you money if your itinerary is focused on one particular region.

The Nationwide JR Pass

The nationwide JR Pass grants passengers unlimited travel on all JR network trains across Japan and comes in three validity lengths: the 7-day JR Pass, 14-day Pass, and 21-day JR Pass. It is even valid for use on Shinkansen bullet trains at no extra charge (except for Nozomi/Mizuho services, where a fare supplement is required).

7-Day JR Pass

The 7-Day JR Pass allows unlimited travel across Japan for one week. Once you make your purchase, just exchange your e-ticket for a physical ticket and enjoy unlimited travel on all JR trains.

14-Day JR Pass

The 14-Day JR Pass is perfect for 2-week trips to Japan and is especially worth it for multi-city itineraries. JR Passes are valid across Japan's four main islands, so you can cover incredible distances with a 14-day pass.

21-Day JR Pass

A 21-Day JR Pass offers ultimate freedom and flexibility. The most cost-effective 21-day JR Pass itineraries traverse the country from north to south, east to west, so you can see every bit of Japan at your leisure.

*Prices for the JR Pass and Shinkansen bullet train tickets are set in Japanese Yen (JPY), so the cost in different currencies can fluctuate depending on the exchange rate.

JR Pass refund and cancellation policy

If your plans change and you need to request a refund for your JR Pass, the process varies massively depending on whether or not you have already exchanged your voucher for the physical ticket in Japan. We explain the different steps according to each scenario below.

Unexchanged JR Pass (Exchange Order/e-Ticket)

When requesting a refund for a voucher—i.e., a digital e-Ticket or physical MCO—that you have not exchanged for an actual ticket, you should direct your request towards Trip.com. Standard administrative fees apply; fees vary according to specific products and platforms.

Exchanged but not activated JR Pass

If you have exchanged your JR Pass but not yet used it, you can still request a refund at any JR exchange office in Japan—as long as you do so before the start date. Handling fees will apply (specific fees vary by pass type/platform).

JR Pass after activation or expiry

Once you have started using your JR Pass, it will no longer be possible to issue a refund. Likewise, no refund can be issued on or after the start date stated on the pass.

JR Pass partial refunds not possible

JR Pass refund policies do not allow for partial refunds. So if you purchase a 14-day pass but only use it for 3 days, you will not be eligible for a refund for the remaining 11 days.

What our customers say

Excellent

We came across your site when looking…

We came across your site when looking for a Senior Railcard for my wife (I already had one). A lot cheaper than through the Railcard site. We also each had a better ticket price than GWR for our Swindon to Paddington return trip. Will definitely explore Trip.com more in coming weeks.

FAQ

How far in advance should I book my JR Pass with Trip.com?

We recommend booking your JR Pass at least two weeks in advance to secure your desired seats—especially on popular sightseeing trains, as these can sell out fast. JR Passes can be booked up to 90 days in advance, so you can be even more organized if you wish.

Is the JR Pass Worth It?

For certain itineraries, yes. While JR Pass prices have risen, it can still save you money and offer unbeatable convenience if you are planning a long-distance, multi-city trip across Japan. If you are staying local to one region, a Regional JR Pass can be especially worth it as they are more affordable and still offer the convenience of unlimited rides for designated lines and areas.

Can I use the JR Pass on the "Nozomi" or "Mizuho" Shinkansen bullet trains?

Yes, your JR Pass partially covers Nozomi or Mizuho Shinkansen services, although a supplementary ticket is required. The cost of the Nozomi surcharge will depend on the distance you travel. Seat types are not taken into consideration.

What is the difference between a Nationwide JR Pass and a Regional Pass?

The Nationwide JR Pass offers coverage across all of Japan's rail network nationwide. A Regional JR Pass, however, is restricted to a specific area and specific services, designed for tourists who plan on sticking to one region. You can find many different Regional Passes for various areas in Japan, such as the JR East Pass and the JR Hokuriku Pass.

Can I reserve seats for free with my JR Pass?

Yes, free seat reservations are included for all JR Pass holders. However, the JR Pass does not guarantee you a seat by itself - if you want to sit in a reserved car, you must book a reserved seat. Seats can be reserved at ticket machines or ticket windows across Japan after exchanging your voucher for a physical ticket.

Does the JR Pass cover subway and bus lines?

Yes and no: the JR Pass is valid on a limited number of local buses operated by JR, but subway lines are usually not operated by JR, and are therefore not covered by the JR Pass.

What happens if I lose my JR Pass or the Exchange Order?

If you lose your physical exchange voucher or JR Pass, it cannot be reissued or refunded. The physical voucher is required to activate your JR Pass; scans, invoices and order confirmation emails cannot be accepted in the voucher's absence.

Activated JR Passes that have been lost at JR stations should be reported to JR Lost and Found as soon as possible. Unfortunately, in both cases you will need to buy a new voucher/pass.
