Winter Family Vacation in Beijing! Yanbai Mountain Villa, New SLH Member, Stay with Kids in a Painted Landscape
In wintertime Beijing, if you want to take your children away from the city's hustle and bustle, Yanbai Mountain Villa is definitely a hidden gem! As a new member of SLH (Small Luxury Hotels of the World) in Beijing, it is located by Yanqi Lake. With every step, the scenery changes, as if you are inside a painting, allowing families to experience the perfect blend of nature and luxury during winter.
🥂 Hotel Design Aesthetics
Designed by Pritzker Prize winner Master Wang Shu, the architecture is inspired by Song Dynasty artist Wang Ximeng’s "A Thousand Li of Rivers and Mountains," and the landscape layout references Song Dynasty Liu Songnian’s "Four Views of Mountains and Water," grand in scale, simple and elegant. In winter, the snow-covered gardens and antique-style buildings complement each other beautifully, like a three-dimensional Song Dynasty landscape painting. Children can experience the charm of Chinese aesthetics, playing while cultivating their sense of beauty.
The hotel backs onto the southern foothills of the Yanshan Mountains, with a 27,000-square-meter garden housing over 50,000 Yanshan pines and cypress trees. In winter, the pine branches remain verdant, dotted with snow, creating stunning scenery. The 32 rooms and suites are scattered among the courtyard and forest views, each offering a different winter landscape, allowing children to embrace nature right from their windows.
☕ Family-Friendly Experiences
The hotel offers 24-hour attentive, customized "Stylish Butler" service. The butler thoughtfully arranges itineraries and prepares children’s supplies (such as kids’ toiletries, small slippers, picture books) according to family needs, making traveling with kids worry-free.
Unmissable family experiences:
✨ Enjoy panoramic views of Yanqi Lake and the southern shore of Yanqi Island from the viewing platform. In winter, the lake surface freezes, and the distant mountains are snow-capped, creating spectacular scenery for children to feel the vastness of nature.
✨ At the lobby bar, tea pavilion, or whiskey bar, order a hot drink (kids can have warm milk or juice), warm up while admiring the beautiful views outside, making for a cozy and pleasant family gathering.
✨ The hotel offers various dining options to satisfy children’s tastes, including classic French cuisine, traditional Chaoshan dishes, and even VIP state banquet-level dining. Fresh ingredients and exquisite cooking, plus children’s exclusive meals (such as tomato meat sauce pasta and vegetable porridge), ensure kids eat happily.
✨ Stroll through the garden landscape, peaceful and serene in winter. Introduce children to pine and cypress trees, breathe fresh air, and exercise; you can also enjoy the outdoor hot spring pool to dispel winter chill, with gentle children’s hot spring services available.
✨ Walk along the rooftop walkway, overlooking the entire villa’s beautiful scenery. The winter sun is gentle, letting children feel the breeze on their faces and enjoy quality family time.
✨ Interact and play with children in the art gallery or banquet hall amid mountain and water light effects and soft music, experiencing an artistic atmosphere and nurturing children’s artistic sensibilities.

🏷️ Winter Family Tips
Winter temperatures in Beijing are low. When traveling with children, bring thick coats, hats, scarves, gloves, and snow boots to avoid catching cold. The hotel rooms have sufficient heating, so lightweight indoor clothing can be prepared. Nearby attractions are some distance from the hotel, so self-driving or having the butler arrange transportation is recommended for easier travel with kids.
Absolutely worth visiting, the scenery is beautiful, the wall is incredible. There are different ways to ascend and descend the wall, the funniest way is the slide.
The Mutianyu Great Wall is fantastic! The tickets are pretty good value - the travel there and back from Beijing can be slightly pricey. Just prepare yourself for a lot of walking up and down if you want to do the whole section like we did. Also, we came in winter (off-season) early in the morning (8:00am) and there were very few other tourists there, which made getting great photos easier but by the time we were heading back down it had started getting very busy, so it's best to plan on an early start.
Una delle cose più belle che ho mai visto. Tutti dovrebbero provare l'emozione di camminare sulla muraglia cinese almeno una volta nella vita.
It is worth going. Compared with the Badaling Great Wall, the biggest advantage is that there are fewer people. The biggest advantage is that there are many foreigners, haha. In fact, Mutianyu is really good, with beautiful scenery. The Great Wall inside and outside is really beautiful. The Hero's Slope is also very challenging and very steep at the end. It is also quite an achievement to climb up. Overall, it is not tiring and it is very leisurely to finish the tour~
I bought the ticket at Mutianyu Bus, and arrived at the scenic spot on time at 8 o'clock. There are shuttle buses and cable cars. It takes 2 hours to climb the scenic spot. The difficulty coefficient is relatively low. Mutianyu Village is a well-developed scenic spot. It is just right to have lunch at noon. I will also meet many foreign friends with their families. The Great Wall is exposed to the sun, and between the mountains, even cats will get heatstroke.
The driver was very nice, very punctual, and provided great service. He contacted us one day in advance to arrange the time. He also suggested that we leave early to go to Mutianyu Great Wall. Fortunately, we left early, and there was no obstruction along the way, and we didn't have to queue. It saved a lot of time. On the way back, he also took us back to the hotel to put our luggage and then sent us to the place where we had dinner. It is highly recommended for families who don't want to squeeze in with people.
After buying the ticket, there is a shuttle bus. It was slippery and foggy in the morning, but the scenery was still very shocking. There is a monument that says "If you haven't been to the Great Wall, you are not a hero". Everyone is waiting to take pictures. There is a cable car to go up, but you have to share it with other people. It is recommended to wear sportswear for convenience. The viewing platform is more beautiful for taking pictures. After coming out, there is a souvenir shop that sells beer with the Great Wall pattern, which is quite special.
It was a very happy trip. I booked a Zanbus on Ctrip. The tour guide was very attentive and added WeChat the day before to discuss the details of the trip. The tour was carried out according to the itinerary the next day. The explanation and play time were sufficient. The children had a great time on the track and slide. The return trip was also on time. It was a very pleasant trip.
