Doc Screening Trouble in the Headwaters | Oasis United Church

Doc Screening Trouble in the Headwaters | Oasis United Church

Penticton
Arts Film
Trouble in the Headwaters is a hard-hitting documentary that investigates the 2018 Grand Forks flood and reveals the connection to clearcut logging in the headwaters of the Kettle River Basin. The film follows Dr. Younes Alila, a professor of forest hydrology at the University of British Columbia, and two retired loggers as they travel through the Kettle River Watershed and unravel the science connecting industrial clearcutting and the growing risk of flooding, landslides and drought across British Columbia. Interact with the filmmaker, Daniel Pierce, and the main subject, Dr. Younes Alila, as well as local ecologist and author Don Gayton. The documentary is being screened in various BC locations from September 4th–17th in Kelowna, Grand Forks, Nelson, Penticton, Vernon, Prince George and Roberts Creek. “These communities are very aware of the need for good forestry jobs for their families and neighbours,” said the film director, Daniel Pierce, “But they’re also deeply concerned about the heightened risk of flooding, landslides and drought that’s been unleashed upon the landscape. These screenings are an opportunity to weigh the costs and benefits of our logging practices and envision a new paradigm of forest management that protects workers and communities.” In addition to showing the film, Pierce and Alila will be facilitating in-depth discussions to expand upon the themes of the film and delve into local issues. Thank you to the Oasis United Church, Seniors for Climate South Okanagan, South Okanagan Council of Canadians and First Things First Okanagan for hosting this important documentary. KING THIEF (Edmonton, AB) A fast and fiery punk rock juggernaut, King Thief was born as a musical call to arms for Edmonton’s underground scene in 2019. The band developed their honest and melodic approach to dirty rock and roll riffery throughout the pandemic shutdown, blending notes of post hardcore and modern punk with underscores of 70s arena rock. Quickly recognized for their energy and technical facility, King Thief’s live performance is described as explosive and engaging – tight and raw, pure focussed energy. The gravelly delivery of Eric Nielson’s lyrics, often rooted in social justice, sit atop the punishing rhythm section that is Darren Chewka’s (Teenage Bottle Rocket, Old Wives) melodic drumming and Nick Kouremenos’ (This is a Standoff, Fire Next Time, Vargouille) bass mastery. Shawn Moncrieff (Choke) and Ryan Podlubny(ex-The Fullblast), both known for innovative and nuanced guitar playing, haunt listeners with adventurously rhythmic chording and inter-weaving lead-line crescendos. If nothing else, King Thief come by their innovative approach to creating art genuinely. The band has recently completed their debut, full length album, which was released on Thousand Islands records in Canada, Disconnect Disconnect records in the U.K and distributed in Europe through Bearded Punk records. IDIOFAME (Kelowna, BC) IDIOFAME is a melodic punk band from Kelowna, BC. They’re 5 guys who really like each other.
