An evening with Karen Dobres exploring her female-focused memoir detailing her disruption of the whole ethos of the football patriarchy! Books on the Rise: Feminist Book Fortnight Events Series📖✨ Join us for a special evening with the wonderfully inspiring Karen Dobres discussing her experiences as a woman in the football industry, with a Q&A and book signing! About the book: Karen Dobres never expected to fall for football – let alone help revolutionise it. In Pitch Invasion, she shares her hilarious and heartfelt journey from someone who 'always zoned out when bloody football was on the telly' to becoming a Director at Lewes FC – the first football club in the world to pay its women and men players equally. In 1994, Karen could barely sit through a match at Wembley. Fast forward to 2023, and she's introducing multi-million-pound deals for the women's team of her local club. How does a trained counsellor and former catwalk model end up navigating the male-dominated world of football? And how did she turn her 'imposter syndrome' into a tool for change? With statues of bisexual pirates, vegan snacks, more women’s toilets than men’s, and even a designated breastfeeding area, Lewes FC is no ordinary football club. It's a pioneering force for equity, inclusion, and innovation. Through Karen's witty, self-deprecating storytelling, Pitch Invasion gives readers an insider's view of the quirky-yet-revolutionary culture at Lewes FC. From organising Suffragette flash mobs to introducing Prosecco on tap at the stadium, Karen brings to life her experiences at this fan-owned, debt-free, gender-equal club where everyone – from local supporters to pop stars – has helped to shape the future of the game. From 2017, when women's football was still fighting for recognition, to the present day, Pitch Invasion is the story of how one woman helped lead the charge for gender equality, challenging football's entrenched hegemony, not just for one club, but across the UK. A celebration of the 250th Anniversary of his birth with Arts Society lecturer Alan Read 2026 marks the 250th anniversary of the birth of the quintessentially English landscapist John Constable. Enormously popular and endlessly reproduced, his paintings today are familiar - perhaps over familiar. But his modern reputation masks a radical, experimental artist who pushed the boundaries of art of his time. He is a gallery guide at Tate Britain and regularly lectures at both London Tates. For twenty years he was a gallery guide and lecturer at the National Portrait Gallery and the Dulwich Picture Gallery. He also works as a London Blue Badge Guide. John Constable John Constable (1776-1837) was a leading figure in English Romantic painting, renowned for his revolutionary landscapes that celebrated the Suffolk countryside of his childhood. His profound connection to his native environment, coupled with his innovative techniques, established him as a pivotal artist in the history of landscape painting. Born in East Bergholt, Suffolk, Constable's father was a prosperous corn merchant. This upbringing afforded him an intimate knowledge and deep affection for the rural life and landscapes of the Stour Valley, an area that would become the primary subject of his art and is now famously known as "Constable Country." He resisted his father's initial wish for him to enter the family business, instead pursuing a career in art, enrolling in the Royal Academy Schools in London in 1799. John Constable's legacy is that of an artist who fundamentally altered the way landscape was perceived and painted. His dedication to capturing the beauty of the everyday world and his innovative techniques have secured his place as one of Britain's greatest artists. His paintings continue to be cherished for their evocative power and their timeless celebration of the English countryside. An exclusive launch of Little Lore's upcoming album 'Being Serafina' with a vinyl listening party, photography exhibition and signing! Join us at Books on the Rise in our events space for an exquisite showcase of Little Lore's upcoming album, complete with accompanying photographic exhibition, live vinyl record listening party and Q&A, with an opportunity for disc/LP signings. Being Serafina: the stunning new album from Little Lore inspired by the work of Tennessee Williams! Little Lore : “Being Serafina began as an academic experiment. I wanted to explore whether method acting techniques could be used as a songwriting device. My initial idea was that I could use the Method to write a collection of songs from multiple different character perspectives, perhaps drawn from fiction or characters of my own invention. But projects have a habit of unfolding in unexpected ways. I signed up for method acting classes and to start the process purely, from an acting point of view, I selected a monologue from a play I loved. The Rose Tattoo, by Tennessee Williams. I have been obsessed by Williams’ writing since I was a teenager. I loved and admired his ability to capture such rich female characters. As a homosexual man born in 1911, he understood how it felt to be oppressed.” “The project began and my first song arrived, written from the perspective of the main protagonist in The Rose Tattoo – Serafina. It’s a song called ‘Did You Exist?’ that sees Serafina questioning everything when she learns that her deceased husband, the love of her life, was having a long-term affair before he died. She is devastated and confused and as I ‘became’ her, I felt it all. And so began an intimate love affair of my own, with this beautiful, vulnerable, funny and flawed character, Serafina. I had a crazy notion that maybe I could go deeper into character and write an entire album from her perspective. Being Serafina is the result. The album draws on a wide range of genre influences from the folk Americana people know me for along with prog rock, punk and blues peppered into the creative process.” “We were spellbound by her ability to highlight unique perspectives with her songwriting” – Maverick magazine “ Duffy’s first-class writing shines through” – RnR magazine A burgeoning presence on the UK Americana and singer-songwriter scene, Little Lore has received many plaudits, both for her astute, observational songwriting and for her warm, heartfelt vocals. Add into the mix the lush instrumentation and sumptuous production from her principal musical collaborator, Oli Deakin, and the result is nothing short of magical. Renowned New York-based producer and multi-instrumentalist, Oli Deakin, (who records under the name of Lowpines) produced album and, as with previous Little Lore releases, provides much of the instrumentation. Being Serafina will be officially released in vinyl, CD and digital formats on 12 June 2026 via: https://littlelore.bandcamp. com or can be pre-saved via: https://distrokid.com/ hyperfollow/littlelore/being- serafina?ref=release About Little Lore: Little Lore is a London based, Indie-Americana singer-storyteller whose songs are both charmingly accessible and beguilingly challenging. Celebrate VCDC’s 35th with a hands-on morning to spark creativity, build connections, and strengthen community impact. VCDC invites you to a different kind of gathering celebrating our 35th anniversary. This is not a traditional anniversary event. It is an interactive, hands-on morning focused on how creativity and partnership help move ideas into real community development outcomes. For decades, VCDC has partnered to turn ideas into real housing outcomes and community impact. This morning builds on that legacy by bringing together the people, perspectives, and practices that make progress possible. At a time when our field is being asked to do more with less, the ability to think differently, form unlikely partnerships, and move ideas into action has never been more essential. The most impactful solutions are not built in silos. They are built together. Through a keynote from Noah Scalin, a collaborative hands-on activity, and stories of impact from practitioners who have translated creative thinking into real-world outcomes. This is a space to connect across roles and sectors, test new ways of thinking, and strengthen the relationships that move the work forward. This gathering is designed for community development practitioners, housing professionals, funders, creatives, and partners across sectors who are shaping and sustaining place.
