Boulevard Humaine is an extraordinary dance theatre piece, featuring three talented female performers. This captivating performance draws inspiration from Yannis Xenakis' acclaimed percussion piece, Okho. Originally commissioned to commemorate the French Revolution's bicentennial, Okho utilizes a distinctive African instrumentation. Boulevard Humaine creatively explores the themes and rhythms of Xenakis' composition through the art of dance. It delves into the concept of interculturalism, inviting audiences to contemplate notions of belonging and the potential for unity amidst diversity. The title, Boulevard Humaine, alludes to the boundaries within which humanity and its diverse constructs are endorsed. Francis Picabia. Women: Works on Paper 1902-1950 | London

Feb 23–May 3, 2024 (UTC)ENDED
London
Exhibitions
Gaining notoriety as a leader in the Dada movement only to later reject it, Picabia’s contemporary Marcel Duchamp described the artist’s work as a “kaleidoscopic series of art experiences.” Always a step ahead of his peers, Picabia produced an extraordinarily diverse body of work that deeply impacted countless generations of artists. Art critic Dave Hickey writes, “more engaged with making works of art than with constructing an oeuvre or articulating an ideology, Picabia wore out styles like a baby wears out shoes.” Regularly shifting styles, the artist’s interest in rendering the female figure remained steadfast. Culling imagery from sources as diverse as ancient Roman sculpture, paintings by Ingres, popular erotic magazines and Hollywood studio portraits, Picabia’s drawings of women illustrate the artist’s expansive and often contradictory interrogation of image-making itself. The drawings range from personal portraits of lovers and friends to stylised, anonymous icons of femininity. For Picabia, representations of women were both an artistic end and a means of aesthetic exploration. Continually reinterpreting this classical subject throughout his career, Picabia produced a portfolio which moves with agility and wit between beauty and bad taste, the avant-garde and the kitsch.

“…With Things as Things” | London

Feb 23–Apr 30, 2024 (UTC)ENDED
London
Exhibitions
For some time now, objects have been going through a rough patch. Consistent inflation of value, systematic deprivation of agency, and a profound identity complex. (Is there such a thing as a digital object? Does it come in a box? Does it keep in the rain?) Verb-wise too, things are not looking well on the object’s front. Both ‘to objectify’ and ‘to object’ carry a negative tone, to say the least. Traces of object fetichism fade away from language and disappear from consciousness: Georges Perec, Francis Ponge, Michael Fried, all find little resonance in post-colonial or post-internet discourse. Objects are now calling for new representation. Not in the name of nostalgia or revisionism, but in the hope of formulating a new language of things, a reformation – a new objective, perhaps. The method is as old as the ages: ‘Take the most humble object, the most everyday action, and try to consider it afresh. Abandon every habit of perception, and describe it without any verbal mechanism that has been worn by use. And all this, not for some reason extraneous to the fact in itself (for, say, symbolism, ideology or aesthetics), but solely in order to reestablish a relationship with things as things.’ The exhibition “…With Things as Things” is organised in collaboration between Galerie Kreo and Luxembourg + Co. and includes works by Rodolfo Aricò, Enrico Baj, Francois Bauchet, Alighiero Boetti, Ronan And Erwan Bouroullec, Christo And Jeanne-Claude, Sue Fuller, Alberto Giacometti, Konstantin Grcic, Damien Hirst, Piero Manzoni, Jeff Mcmillan, Marc Newson, Isamu Noguchi, Cornelia Parker, Michelangelo Pistoletto, Man Ray, Gerhard Richter, Jerszy Seymour, Studio Wieki Somers, Rachel Whiteread.

Deutsche Börse Photography Foundation Prize 2024 | London

Feb 23–Jun 2, 2024 (UTC)ENDED
London
Exhibitions
The international artists shortlisted are: VALIE EXPORT, Gauri Gill & Rajesh Vangad, Lebohang Kganye and Hrair Sarkissian. This year’s shortlisted artists all show the power of photography to explore, investigate and interrogate our world. See the exhibition at The Photographers’ Gallery bringing together work by all shortlisted artists, from 23 February to 2 June 2024. The winner of the £30,000 prize will be announced on 16 May 2024, with the other finalists each receiving £5,000. VALIE EXPORT (b. 1940, Austria) became notorious from the late 1960s for her radical performances and critical examination of women’s role in society and the arts. Photography has played a pivotal role in her work, from documentation to multimedia installations and single works. Through fusing photography and Warli painting, photographer Gauri Gill (b. 1970, India) and painter Rajesh Vangad (b. 1975, India) collaboratively explore how viewers ascribe meaning to a place and how the act of viewing itself creates complicity. They encourage viewers to explore the hidden, elusive layers that exist beneath the surface. Lebohang Kganye’s (b. 1990, South Africa) photographic projects cross personal and collective histories. Her skilful blending of images and words allows her to navigate the complexity of the South African experience, opening new ways of understanding and contributing to the process of decolonisation. Hrair Sarkissian’s (b. 1973, Syria) conceptual photography focuses on deeply personal narratives that reflect the complexity of larger historical and social issues. Large-scale photographs, film and installations all aim to evoke emotional experiences, foster awareness and a sense of solidarity.

Accordion Fields | London

Feb 23–May 4, 2024 (UTC)ENDED
London
Exhibitions
The title of the exhibition, Accordion Fields, expresses the very nature of expansion and compression: geographically, as many of the artists have either returned to or moved away from London, and compositionally, with the artists’ specific awareness of, and different approaches to, depicting space or a place. Conceived through a variety of approaches, depicted space within the stretcher is folded, tilted, layered, and peeled away so that depth perception is confused and deferred. In the paintings of Varda Caivano, Sarah Cunningham, Pam Evelyn and Tim Stoner, imagery is often pressed toward the surface of the picture plane, so that an ambiguity between what is representational or abstract space occurs. Elsewhere, figures and forms seen from ambiguous viewpoints are left untethered in disorientating expanses, with undefined borders, such as in the work of Andrew Pierre Hart and Elinor Stanley. In the figuration of Dexter Dalwood and Joseph Yaeger we witness the re-presenting of historical facts and the examination of found imagery. Positioning visual information ‘out of time’, these painters imbue their works with complex coded narratives and psychological tension. Accordion Fields features work that draws inspiration from a wide array of cultural and historical disciplines, from painters across art history – David Bomberg, Helen Frankenthaler, Joan Mitchell and Willem de Kooning ¬– to diverse genres of music and cinematography. Rather than confining their attention to one identity or geopolitical space, or moulding into a movement or neat composition, these eight artists embrace timeless and universal themes that seek to recognise not just their own existence but that of the human spirit, providing these paintings the opportunity to connect with audiences past, present and future.

Millais, un Peintre Hors du Temps: Writing about Victorian Art in France is an event that is part of The Paul Mellon Centre's spring Research Lunch series 2024. The event will take place on February 23, 2024, at the Paul Mellon Centre in London (16 Bedford Square, WC1B 3JA). The presentation, led by Sarah Gould, will introduce her upcoming book, a monograph on John Everett Millais. The book, soon to be published by the French publishing house Cohen and Cohen, explores the multifaceted career of Millais, from his rebellious phase to his leadership as the President of the Royal Academy. It offers fresh perspectives on Millais's body of work, particularly focusing on discourses around the materiality of his paintings. By placing the question of texture in an epistemological context and an eccentric relationship to modernity, the book delves into the artistic creation and empiricism. Additionally, it analyzes Millais's observations and interpretations of pivotal socio-political and cultural events of his era, including the Crimean War, industrialization, and colonial expansion, providing insights into the environmental significance of his art. Sarah Gould's presentation will also touch upon the reception of Victorian art in France, offering a comprehensive overview of her forthcoming publication.
