Join Masaki Yogi, a distinguished maker, artist, and Sanshin instructor, for a special workshop focused on the repair and maintenance of this unique and intricately designed instrument. In this workshop, Masaki Yogi will guide you through essential maintenance techniques, including repairing and replacing Karakui, and provide tips on preserving sound quality. Participants will receive basic tools, including a set of 3 strings, threading, and tuning pegs for their Sanshin. Please bring your Sanshin to the workshop for hands-on learning. Masaki YogiFrom a young age, Masaki Yogi spent his days at the Sanshin and woodworking shop run by his grandfather. On holidays, he helped create Sanshin and wooden crafts and attended his grandfather's Sanshin classes in the evenings, starting at the age of five. By fifteen, he had obtained his teaching license. In 2011, at the age of twenty, he won the Diamond Grand Prix Award at a folk song competition held in Okinawa. Following in his late grandfather's footsteps, he established the Yogi Folk Song Institute in January 2024, focusing primarily on making and repairing Sanshin, as well as custom woodworking projects like one-piece tables and letter carvings. He also participates in events both in Japan and abroad about six times a year, where he exhibits, sells, repairs, and performs with the Sanshin, all with the goal of promoting and preserving its rich cultural heritage.
