Join wildlife photographer Alex Hyde to discover the wonderful world of Fungi Up Close. Alex has revealed unimaginable beauty, often unnoticed. Come and discover fascinating facts about fungi and hear Alex describe tips and tricks for photographing the natural world yourself. As well as a formal presentation, there will be an opportunity to ask questions about the photographic techniques Alex uses and a discussion about what we can do to help biodiversity. Tickets are £3 and the event is suitable for adults. Fungi are remarkable organisms that form a diverse kingdom comprising approximately 144,000 known species. They play essential roles in ecosystems, from decomposing organic matter to forming symbiotic relationships with plants. Mycelium are the unseen parts of fungi, long threads (called hyphae) hidden beneath the forest floor. This mycelial network facilitates nutrient exchange, water transport and electrical communication creating a hidden lifeline of mutual support and resource sharing beneath our feet. A selection of Alex's photographs from these visits have been used to create the touring exhibition that will be on show at Beeston Library from Friday 13 June to Wednesday 23 July. Life for working class families in the early years of Queen Victoria’s reign was anything but easy. While families struggled to feed themselves, the forest and heath lands of Sherwood were full of wildlife that could supplement their diets. New laws,  however, made the taking of this wildlife a criminal offence that could lead to severe punishment.  This talk by local historian Sam Millard tells of a violent clash between poachers and gamekeepers on the Rufford Abbey estate, an incident that was  reported in newspapers throughout the land. What happened to those involved? Were they the rogues and vagabonds described by the courts, or the heroes portrayed in a folk song written at the time?
