Learn how type was designed, made and used in the 19th century jobbing press, with examples from the archives at Robert Smail's Smail’s 1877 Specimen Book: Type, Typography and Graphic Design in the 19 th Century This evening talk will draw on the Smail’s archive to discuss how letterpress type was designed, made and used up to 1900. We will also look at the archival guard book in more detail and discover what type faces and graphic design styles were used in the early years of letterpress printing in Innerleithen. Smail’s was established in 1866, and has now been printing in Innerleithen for 160 years. The printing works served the local textiles mills as well as other businesses, the St Ronan’s Border games, and local people. The guard books are 52 large volumes containing one copy of every job printed between 1877 and 1954. This is the first of two talks that will dip into this substantial archive at Smail's. NuZones is excited to present the first round of the NuTags event series, taking place at Glentress Mountain Bike Trail Centre in Peebles. This thrilling competition, known as enduroteering, invites participants to test their skills and speed at Glentress. The challenge is to find 10 NFC tags hidden within the woods, strategically placed to ensure an exhilarating experience on the hill. To aid participants, a map displaying the location of each tag will be provided, along with clues from the tags themselves. As you progress through the hunt, scanning each tag will reveal the next tag's location through an accompanying image. It is essential to scan the tags in the correct order, as hinted by the clues, and record your time to be eligible for prizes. The event offers categories for both men and women, including Mens Analogue, Womens Analogue, Mens Ebike, and Womens Ebike. The three fastest individuals in each category who successfully find all the tags will be awarded 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place prizes. Winners will be notified via email on how to redeem their well-deserved prizes. After the event, participants can enjoy discounts at the Glentress cafe and take the opportunity to relax and celebrate their achievements.
