Join Scottish Highlands based mountain artist Jack Spowart on a morning hike to learn the fundamentals of landscape drawing. During the workshop, Jack will share his approach to creating artwork, the tools he uses, and how to identify a strong composition. He will also explain how he turned his passion for drawing into a successful career as a freelance illustrator and artist. Once we reach the drawing location, you will learn how to select compelling compositions in the environment and quickly create thumbnail sketches. Jack will guide you in building detail using pencil and confidently transitioning to fine-line pen work. You will explore various mark-making techniques, including stippling, bordering, cross-hatching, and line work, to add depth, detail, and interest to your drawings. Although we won't be able to complete a full drawing due to the winter temperatures, Jack will hold a competition after the workshop. Participants will have the opportunity to win a signed and framed print from Jack's collection. All you have to do is finish your drawing using the knowledge gained during the workshop and submit it to him. Jack will showcase your drawings on his social media platforms, and the winner will be determined by his audience. All necessary materials will be provided, but please dress warmly and wear appropriate footwear for the day's conditions. The workshop will go ahead regardless of the weather, and if necessary, we may spend some time indoors. You will be contacted with further details if this is the case. We will also provide a recommended personal kit list and joining instructions closer to the event date. This Creatives workshop is hosted by the Scottish Mountaineering Press in collaboration with Wild Roots Guiding as part of the Fort William Mountain Festival. Spaces for this workshop are limited to 12 participants. About Jack Spowart: Jack Spowart is an artist and illustrator based in the Scottish Highlands. He left his career as an art teacher to pursue his dream of building a creative business. Adventure, sustainability, and happiness are at the core of his work as he navigates the complexities of the art world. Jack's current artwork is characterized by attention to detail and precision. He seeks out intriguing compositions in nature, aiming for balance and intrigue. Drawing inspiration from his own photographs of various locations, he captures the character of each place through a process that starts with a rough pencil sketch. If the composition comes together, he adds more details in pencil before moving on to inking. His methodical approach involves building depth, shadow, and atmosphere with lines and dots.

This family-friendly cycling event offers a thrilling off-road ride through the stunning Cairngorms National Park. Choose between the Bikeathon only tickets or the Bikeathon plus Family Fundraising Ceilidh tickets to enjoy a discounted price for the Ceilidh tickets. The Ceilidh will be held at the Duke of Gordon Hotel in Kingussie, starting at 7pm and ending at 10pm. In addition to the main Bikeathon, this year we are introducing a balance bike ride for younger participants. The ride will start from Kingussie High School, passing Ruthven Barracks and following the cycle path to Tromie Bridge and the meadows. A 'Wee Picnic' will be held at Tromie Meadows before returning to the Duke of Gordon. This ride provides an easier and shorter route for our younger riders, with a limit of 50 places and all balance bike riders accompanied by an adult. For experienced riders seeking a challenge, we have the advanced gravel route. This route takes you through Glenfeshie and over a high mountain pass into Glen Tromie. You can then choose to continue to Gaick Lodge or return along Glen Tromie. This route is signposted but not marshalled, and participants must be able to carry out their own repairs and navigate through mountain terrain. Entry fees for the advanced route are £20, while the family ride is £15 for adults and £5 for kids. The balance bike ride to Tromie Meadows is £5 for kids and free for accompanying adults. The event aims to raise funds for Kingussie High School Parent Council, with additional sponsorship encouraged for a cause, club, or group of your choice. Registration will open at 9.30 am on the day, with the ride starting at 10.30 am. Take your time to complete the route and enjoy the refreshment stops and entertainment along the way. Support Mikey's Line and Cardiac Risk in the Young by raising sponsorship for the ride. Help us beat the £1,300 raised in 2023 and make a difference to these worthwhile charities.
