08 106 Shakespeare Study Day: Twelfth Night | Paterson Centre, Botanic Garden, University of Dundee
Oct 5, 2024 (UTC+0)ENDED
Dundee
Booking will close on Friday 27th September 2024 at 12 noon. Due to limited resources, we are UNABLE TO ACCEPT LATE BOOKINGS after this date. This course will be held at the Paterson Learning Centre, Botanic Garden , University of Dundee, Riverside Drive, Dundee DD2 1QH. Directions to get to this venue can be found by clicking here . Please note, there is ample free parking at the Botanic Garden and there is also a café which is open from 09.00 - 17.00 on a Saturday. Twelfth Night is a beguiling mix of shifting moods, lit by the iridescent beauty of “changeable taffeta” – funny, poignant, lyrical, melancholy, sometimes subtle, sometimes outrageous in its comic invention. It ranges from “If music be the food of love” to Sir Toby’s Belch’s “A plague o’ these pickled herring” and thoroughly deserves Hazlitt’s praise as “one of the most delightful of Shakespeare’s comedies”. It presents a study in the follies of love, whether it be romantic love, self-love, love of the good life or love of mischief. Accompanied by haunting songs, aristocrats, a steward, a pirate, a cross-dressing page boy and a professional fool play their parts in the brilliantly plotted action. We will focus in close detail on particular scenes and passages to engage with language, imagery and characterization. Film extracts and slides (from productions by the Royal Shakespeare Company) will help our enjoyment and understanding of the play in performance. Participants are asked to have read the play in advance and to bring a copy of the play with them. The day will run from 10am to 3.45pm, with breaks for refreshments and an hour’s lunch break. Tutor: Rebecca Brown Before moving to Scotland, Rebecca worked for the Shakespeare Birthplace Trust, in Stratford upon Avon, where she organized and taught courses on Shakespeare and the literature of his time to a wide range of students, young and old, including many from British and international universities. She often worked in collaboration with the Royal Shakespeare Company and the University of Birmingham’s Shakespeare Institute. In recent years, Rebecca has taught courses for the Continuing Education programmes of the universities of Dundee and St Andrews. Enquiries should be sent to: lifelonglearningdundee@gmail.com As a volunteer organisation with limited resources, we try to respond to all queries as quickly as possible. Please bear with us.

A Fugitive Class: On Refusal, Escape and Joy | Cooper Gallery
Oct 31, 2024 (UTC+0)ENDED
Dundee
Taking Audre Lorde’s classic essay, Poetry Is Not A Luxury, as an inspiration, this workshop explores what it means to use beauty as means to transform ourselves and the world. Poetry can be a revolutionary practice in which we refuse to accept the brutality of the world and escape into beauty, into community, into other wonders. Poetry is an act of internal reflection and contemplation but also conspiracy, possibility and change.
The workshop opens with a collective reading and discussion of Poetry is Not A Luxury. We will then read and discuss our favourite poems which helped us to escape other possibilities. We will conclude with a zine-making workshop about escape, joy and poetry. This workshop forms part of the free curriculum of events for The Ignorant Art School Sit-in #4 Outside the Circle. Participant info This is limited capacity in-person event. We will have papers and pens and scissors available. Please feel free to bring any additional paper or dry drawing/writing tools of your preference. Biography Akwugo Emejulu is Chair of Sociological Studies at the University of Sheffield.
