Pingxi Sky Lantern Festival 2026, Taiwan | New Taipei City
Mar 3–Mar 6, 2026 (UTC+8)
New Taipei City
Celebration
Several years ago, the Discovery Channel named the Pingxi Sky Lantern Festival one of the best festivals in the world, and National Geographic listed it among the top ten winter travel destinations. Held annually during the first full moon of the Lunar New Year, the exact date varies. Every year, thousands of visitors descend on the hillside town of Shifen to release an estimated 100,000 to 200,000 glittering rice paper sky lanterns into the night sky.
The Pingxi Sky Lantern Festival, while upholding ancient traditions, features the release of thousands of dazzling lanterns into the night sky. The Taiwan Lantern Festival, on the other hand, was founded by the Taiwan Tourism Bureau to boost tourism revenue. It changes locations each year to attract more international visitors to various parts of Taiwan. Its highlight is the giant, high-tech sky lanterns that blend pop culture with traditional Taiwanese symbols and the Chinese zodiac, as well as folk art and performances.

Exhibitions
The 14th Taipei Biennial in 2025 will start from the overlapping history of Taiwan and will use various public projects such as exhibitions, performances, on-site productions, and forums as a basis to capture the ineffable connections between personal memories and collective consciousness and to reconstruct the relationship between people and the world with emotional thinking. This year's Taipei Biennial will be curated by the duo of curators Sam Bardaouil from Lebanon and Till Fellrath from Germany. The two curators have served as co-directors of the Hamburger Bahnhof-Museum für Gegenwart in Berlin since 2022. With multiple professional knowledge and cultural backgrounds in art history, theater, economics and politics, the two are good at thinking about the close relationship between exhibitions and cities from different perspectives and exploring the potential of local history and international dialogue. In 2022, they co-curated the 16th Lyon Biennale "Manifesto of Fragility" and the French Pavilion of the 59th Venice Biennale in the same year. "Our curatorial approach will continue the ongoing plan, focusing on artists and allowing the voices of those who strive to expand our understanding of this complex world to be heard," said Bardaouil and Fellrath in a statement.

"Eternal Picasso" Light Art Exhibition: Art, Muse, and Confidant—[Five Exhibition Highlights, Seven Exhibition Zones]
Throughout the history of 20th-century art, Picasso stands as an eternal flame, igniting the spirit of creativity and exploration. A pioneering artist who dared to break convention and forge new horizons, each creation posed a profound questioning of himself and his time. He depicted loneliness with blue, expressed tenderness with pink, and defied all expectations with Cubism. This exhibition takes you into his creative soul, revealing the artist's life through the lens of light and shadow. This exhibition allows viewers to move beyond simply "seeing Picasso's paintings" to "entering Picasso's creations."
Prologue | The Picasso You Don't Know: Through Picasso's famous quotes and anecdotes, viewers will enter his little-known world. From anecdotes to fragments of his work, we gain a glimpse into his often-understood humor, perseverance, and contradictions. This is the gateway to Picasso's inner world.
Section 1 | Artistic Pioneers in the Great Waves of the Times: Journey along the axis of time, glimpsing the growth of young talents amidst the great waves of the 20th century. From the artistic initiation of their adolescence to their studies and explorations in Barcelona and Paris, every step was closely intertwined with war, politics, and social change. Each image and story reminds the audience: art is not just about self-expression; it can also challenge the world and rewrite history.
Section 2 | Picasso Gallery: Deconstruction and Reconstruction. This section will guide visitors through the historical context and artistic expression behind "Guernica," exploring how art has become a timeless language for reflecting on war and calling for peace.
Area 4 | Eternal Picasso: A 360-degree immersive theater pays tribute to Picasso through image, sound, and color. Immersive Experience Exhibition of Ancient World Civilizations | Taipei
Jan 15–Apr 19, 2026 (UTC+8)
Taipei
Exhibitions
✨ Step into the origins of civilization: The immersive exhibition of four ancient civilizations officially opens ✨
The "World Ancient Civilizations Exhibition" uses four major civilizations as its axis, leading visitors through time to explore humanity's earliest cultural imagination and order construction.
The exhibition uses immersive technology to connect the core spirit of the four ancient civilizations, allowing visitors to transcend regions and eras and rediscover the origins and imagination of human civilization through a blend of light, sound, and large-scale scenery; history is no longer a static display, but a journey of civilization that can be experienced physically.
The exhibition begins with Assyria, where hunting reliefs are magnified in light and shadow, human-headed winged bulls emerge from the shadows, and cuneiform script lights up one by one in the space, outlining the logic of an empire founded on power and writing. Moving on to Egyptian civilization, the geometry of the pyramids, the gaze of the statues, and hieroglyphs slowly emerge, while projections of mummy rituals and journeys to the underworld reveal the core of ancient Egypt's belief in "eternity."
The Mediterranean section presents an interplay between Greek mythology and Roman rationality: divine figures are reconstructed using light sculptures, while arches, columns, and architectural vocabulary showcase how Rome constructed the world through engineering and law. Finally, in the Indian civilization section, large baths, urban planning, and undeciphered animal seals unfold layer by layer in soft light, while mandalas and reincarnation projections guide visitors into philosophical reflections on the cycle of life.
🐾 Assyrian civilization
The roar of power and order
The Assyrian civilization revolves around kingship and conquest, and its exhibition area is designed as an immersive space based on the concept of an ancient palace.
Light and shadow reconstruct the hunting relief on the facade—the lion's muscular texture, galloping posture, and the moment the king draws his bow are magnified, symbolizing the Assyrian cultural spirit that reveres strength.
The cuneiform script surrounding the walls, like historical inscriptions emerging from clay tablets, gradually illuminates the dark space, revealing the Assyrian order of governing the state, establishing legal codes, and preserving military achievements. Writing is considered a crucial cornerstone in laying the foundation for the civilization's structure.
The immersive projection of the human-headed winged bull became the visual focus; the giant mythical beast emerged from the shadows, its wings unfolding amidst beams of light, accompanied by the echoing sound of a lion's roar, presenting the unique majesty and divinity of the Assyrian palace.
The interplay of light and shadow, sound and massive landscaping forms the symbolic system of Assyrian civilization, demonstrating how it shaped order with power and maintained the existence of the empire through order.
🐾 Egyptian Civilization
The gaze of the eternal light
Egyptian civilization, with "eternity" as its core concept, constructed a ritual space that lies between life and death.
The geometric outlines of the pyramids, the gaze of the statues, and the rhythm of the hieroglyphs gradually emerge in the dim light, revealing a complete worldview based on the concept of regeneration.
The Rosetta Stone is replicated to scale, showcasing the layered structure of the language. The three scripts light up sequentially under the imagery, making the process of deciphering ancient Egyptian languages tangible. The statues and landscapes present the orderly spirit of Egyptian faith through axes and symmetry, and the symbolic connection between the pharaoh, the gods, and the journey of the soul is made clearer by the space.
Immersive projection recreates mummy rituals, sun myths, and journeys to the underworld. Beams of light flow along the walls, creating a narrative field that operates according to divine logic, reinforcing the Egyptians' understanding of life, death, and the eternal cycle.
Through light and shadow, symbols, and replicas, Egyptian civilization is brought to life in this area, revealing its unique architecture, writing, and belief system.
🐾 Mediterranean Civilization
The place where myth and reason meet
The Mediterranean civilization exhibition, themed around the cultural shift from "myth to reason," uses light and shadow, architectural language, and dynamic symbols to present the intellectual landscape shaped by Greece and Rome.
The silhouettes of colonnades, arches, and statues emerge sequentially in the space, creating a visual rhythm that combines light and depth, symbolizing the interweaving and evolution of civilizations.
Greek mythological imagery is presented in the form of light sculpture—the posture of Zeus, the thunder symbol, and the symbolic actions of the gods are recombined in the projection, reinterpreting the narrative possibilities of classical sculptures.
Corresponding to mythology is Rome's way of shaping the world through engineering, law, and architecture. Architectural fragments, columns, and arch replicas present institutionalized thinking in precise proportions, and light slides through their structures, allowing the power of reason to be visualized.
The juxtaposition of multiple images demonstrates how Mediterranean civilization achieved a balance between imagination and thought, symbolizing humanity's cultural transformation from divine narratives to a rational world.
🐾 Indian Civilization
The Wheel of Life of Light and Shadow
The Indian Civilization Exhibition Area takes "The Cycle of Life" as its main theme, using light and shadow, water ripples and symbolic imagery to create a space that combines urban rationality with mysterious philosophy.
Bathing in soft light, the Great Bath, stepped architecture, and fragments of urban planning in Mohenjo-daro reveal the highly ordered urban structure that had taken shape in ancient India by 3000 BC. Looking down, the interplay of light and shadow recreates the boundaries and layers of the Great Bath, allowing a direct visual representation of the ancient city's lifestyle centered on public spaces.
The undeciphered "animal seals" are the visual focus of this area. Symbols such as buffalo, lion, and rhinoceros are magnified and recombined through projection, and the engravings, postures, and compositional rhythms are reread in the light and shadow, symbolizing the ancient Indian language system and cultural symbolism that have not yet been fully deciphered.
The latter part of the exhibition area shifts its focus to cosmology and religious philosophy, with images of mandalas, reincarnation, and fire rituals dynamically projected to showcase the thought process of the cycle of life, outlining the cultural landscape of Indian civilization that possesses a profound spiritual dimension beyond urban rationality.
This exhibition area showcases the unique characteristics of ancient Indian civilization, which are interwoven in urban planning, linguistic symbols, and philosophy of life: a civilization that constructs the world with order and understands life through cycles.
