Beyond Chatbots: Understanding Agentic AI in Legal | Cleary Gottlieb Steen & Hamilton LLP

May 19, 2025 (UTC-4)ENDED
New York
Cultural Experiences
The legal profession has embraced AI chatbots and assistants, but a new frontier is emerging: agentic AI systems that can autonomously plan, execute tasks, and make decisions within defined parameters. Join us at Cleary Gottlieb for an evening exploring how these self-directed AI agents are poised to transform the practice and business of law. We'll begin with a 10-minute primer from an AI expert to demystify agentic AI and establish a common vocabulary. Then, our distinguished panel of legal technologists, practitioners, and innovators will dive deep into the practical implications: What tasks can these systems handle today? What are the ethical and regulatory considerations? How might autonomous AI reshape the delivery of legal services? This isn't about hype—it's about understanding the real capabilities, limitations, and opportunities of AI systems that can act independently to support legal work. Whether you're a tech-curious attorney, legal operations professional, or innovation leader, you'll leave with actionable insights about this next wave of legal technology. Yiyun Li + Mitzi Angel: Things in Nature Merely Grow | Strand Book Store

May 20, 2025 (UTC-4)ENDED
New York
Cultural Experiences
Join us for an in-person event with Pulitzer Prize finalist Yiyun Li for the launch of her new book Things in Nature Merely Grow. Joining Yiyun in conversation is President and Publisher of Farrar, Straus and Giroux, Mitzi Angel. This event will be hosted in the Strand Book Store's 3rd floor Rare Book Room at 828 Broadway on 12th Street. Can’t make the event? Purchase a signed copy of Things in Nature Merely Grow here. ACCESSIBILITY: Strand Book Store is an ADA compliant venue. The event space is accessible via elevator. Please ask a Strand employee upon arrival for directions to accessible seating if preferred. ASL interpretation is available for this event by request only. Please reach out to our events team at events@strandbooks.com by 5/6 to request. For further information on accessibility in this space, or to make a request, please contact events@strandbooks.com . -------------------------------------------------------------------- Pulitzer Prize finalist Yiyun Li’ s Things in Nature Merely Grow is a remarkable, defiant work of radical acceptance that considers the loss of Li’s son James. It is a book that weaves clarity of thought out of an unfathomable experience, a book that matters immensely. “There is no good way to state these facts, which must be acknowledged,” Li writes at the beginning of Things in Nature Merely Grow. “My husband and I had two children and lost them both: Vincent in 2017, at sixteen, James in 2024, at nineteen. Both chose suicide, and both died not far from home.” There is no good way to say this—because words fall short. It takes only an instant for death to become fact, “a single point in a timeline.” Living now on this single point, Li turns to thinking and reasoning and searching for words that might hold a place for James. Li does what she can: “doing the things that work,” including not just writing but gardening, reading Camus and Wittgenstein, learning the piano, and living thinkingly alongside death. This is a book for James, but it is not a book about grieving or mourning, about something that has an afterwards or an endpoint. As Li writes, “The verb that does not die is to be. Vincent was and is and will always be Vincent. James was and is and will always be James. We were and are and will always be their parents. There is no now and then, now and later, only, now and now and now and now.” Things in Nature Merely Grow tells the truth about loss as best words can, and challenges us to live with a measure of Li’s rigor, grace, and understanding. It is a book that testifies to its author’s indomitable spirit. Photo credit: Basso Cannarsa Agence Opale Yiyun Li is one of our greatest living writers, the author of several works of fiction— Wednesday’s Child; The Book of Goose; Must I Go; Where Reasons End; Kinder Than Solitude; Gold Boy, Emerald Girl; The Vagrants ; and A Thousand Years of Good Prayers —and the memoir Dear Friend, from My Life I Write to You in Your Life. She is the recipient of many awards, including a PEN /Faulkner Award, a PEN /Malamud Award, a PEN /Hemingway Award, a PEN /Jean Stein Book Award, a MacArthur Fellowship, and a Windham-Campbell Prize, and she was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize. Her work has appeared in The New Yorker, A Public Space, The Best American Short Stories , and The PEN/O . Henry Prize Stories, among other publications. She teaches at Princeton University and lives in Princeton, New Jersey. Mitzi Angel is President and Publisher of Farrar, Straus and Giroux. Previously, she was publisher of Faber and Faber in London. The authors she has worked with include Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, Rachel Cusk, Garth Greenwell, Sheila Heti, Ben Lerner, Yiyun Li, Édouard Louis, Paul Murray, Sally Rooney, and Amia Srinivasan. Forthcoming projects include books by Hilton Als, James Gleick, and Bryan Washington. Information Source: The Strand Book Store | eventbrite

Transactional Foreign Policy and the End of the Liberal Order? | Serendipity Labs - Grand Central NYC

May 20, 2025 (UTC-4)ENDED
New York
Conferences
The second Trump presidency seems to mark a decisive break with the value-based, liberal order that has shaped global politics since World War II. Emphasizing a more transactional approach to foreign policy—favoring deals over traditional diplomacy—Donald Trump’s return to the White House might create far-reaching consequences for our Western alliances, as well as for global governance, security, trade, and multilateral cooperation. This shift challenges the norms and institutions that have long underpinned international collaboration, raising fundamental questions about the future of U.S. leadership on the world stage. What does this mean for Europe, NATO, and the balance of power in regions from the Indo-Pacific to the Middle East? Join 1014 and the American Council on Germany for a timely discussion with Dr. Stefan Mair , Director of the German Institute for International and Security Affairs, on how the world might navigate a new era of international realignment. In partnership with the American Council on Germany. This event is located at Serendipity Labs - Grand Central: 205 East 42 Street, 20th Floor, NY 10017 Biography Dr. Stefan Mair is an expert in foreign and security policy with a particular focus on the challenges facing Germany and the European Union. His work centers on geopolitical and geoeconomic dynamics, as well as trade and foreign economic policy. He brings over three decades of experience in both policy research and industry representation. Since October 1, 2020, he has served as Director of the German Institute for International and Security Affairs (SWP) and as Executive Chairman of the Stiftung Wissenschaft und Politik. In this capacity, he leads one of Europe’s foremost think tanks dedicated to international relations and security, overseeing its strategic direction, institutional operations, and engagement with national and international decision-makers. From 2010 to 2020, he was a member of the Executive Board of the Federation of German Industries (BDI), where he was responsible for shaping the organization’s approach to international economic and trade policy. During this time, he played a key role in representing the interests of German industry in both European and global forums. Previously, from 2007 to 2009, he served as Research Director at the German Institute for International and Security Affairs (SWP), guiding the institute’s analytical work across multiple policy fields. His earlier tenure at SWP, spanning from 1992 to 2007 and again from 2009 to 2010, included roles as head of the Middle East and Africa Research Division (until March 2001) and as a member of the executive board (2001–2007 and 2009–2010). He earned his doctorate (Dr. rer. pol.) in 1992 from Ludwig-Maximilians-University in Munich. From 1989 to 1992, he was a PhD scholarship holder at the ifo Institute for Economic Research in Munich, where he conducted research in the Developing Countries Department, focusing on economic development and international trade. He is widely recognized for his contributions to foreign and security policy analysis and has authored numerous publications and policy papers throughout his career. His interdisciplinary expertise and leadership experience make him a prominent voice in European policy discourse. Information Source: 1014 | eventbrite

Past speakers include Tschabalala Self, Sanford Biggers, Marilyn Minter, Jeff Koons, Anne Pasternak and Will Cotton, among others. To purchase tickets directly from the AFA, or for additional information, contact us at 917-583-4642 or events@amfedarts.org. Dress code for this event is business attire. About the Artist: Jeffrey Gibson grew up in major urban centers in the United States, Germany, and Korea, where he absorbed the transgressive soundtrack of the 1980s through limited access to MTV. Gibson graduated from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 1995 and received a Master of Arts in painting at the Royal College of Art, London, in 1998. While in Chicago he also worked as a research assistant on the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA) for the Field Museum, a formative experience that fostered an ongoing interest in questions of ownership and notions of cultural translation. Though trained as a painter, Gibson began incorporating materials and techniques that deliberately reference his heritage—such as raw hides and bead work—around 2010. A major turning point in his career, in 2012 he presented ‘one becomes the other,’ his first solo exhibition of sculpture and video, at Participant Inc. Sculpture, moving image, and sound have since become an integral aspect of his practice. He is known for his immersive, multi-sensory installations that invoke and interweave such disparate contexts as faith-based spaces of communion and night clubs. The Invisible Spy tells the story of America's first secret agent of WWII (Ernest Cuneo, an Italian-American former NFL player turned White House insider) who worked with Churchill's spies at Rockefeller Center, including his pal Ian Fleming (who even dedicated one of his James Bond novels to Cuneo). This biography is fundamentally about the origins of U.S. intelligence, the fight against Nazis, and the effort of Churchill's spies at Rockefeller Center to convince America to get into the war. It also touches on Russian "double agents" during the Cold War, the early days of the NFL, the Hollywood/Broadway worlds of Cuneo as private lawyer for media star Walter Winchell, and Cuneo's influence on Fleming's massively popular James Bond novels and movies. It also explores the strong sense of being an Italian-American in the mid-20th Century for both Cuneo, a feeling shared by his first boss, Fiorello LaGuardia. Seating at 2:45 p.m. Ticket includes free acess to the Museum's current exhibit. Information Source: Italian American Museum | eventbrite
