Louise Giovanelli | New York
May 9–Jun 21, 2025 (UTC-5)ENDED
New York
GRIMM presents a solo exhibition of new paintings by British artist Louise Giovanelli. This is the Manchester-based artist’s fifth solo exhibition at GRIMM and her fourth at the New York gallery. Metrograph showcases a selection of films curated by the artist to accompany the exhibition.
Giovanelli's delicate, luminous works inject vitality into historical subjects from the canon of Western art. Through interconnected series, she weaves together visual clues surrounding a specific moment or event. Her subject matter is primarily chosen for its formal qualities and includes, staged photographs, film stills, classical sculpture, and architectural elements. Within each series, Giovanelli repeats her motifs and certain paintings appear nearly identical, excepting slight alterations of the composition, or tonality.
JULIEN NGUYEN | Matthew Marks Gallery
May 9–Jun 28, 2025 (UTC-5)ENDED
New York
Matthew Marks is pleased to announce Julien Nguyen, the next exhibition in his gallery at 526 West 22nd Street. The exhibition includes twenty new paintings.
Julien Nguyen draws inspiration from disparate historical periods and cultural traditions, collapsing time and distance to create new worlds. Nguyen embodies this approach not only in the content of his work, which references art history, science fiction, contemporary subjects, and the artist’s personal life, but also in his materials, which draw from Medieval, Renaissance, and traditional Japanese painting practices. This exhibition presents the artist’s first paintings made directly on copper panels, a painting technique first developed during the Middle Ages and later popularized by Old Masters such as Rembrandt and Jan Brueghel the Elder.

Last year's 3rd Japan Parade & Street Fair was a great success as approximately 100 units and 2,500 people marched in a spectacular procession through Central Park West and was covered by over 150 media outlets in both the U.S. and Japan. The 2024 parade celebrated the “U.S.-Japan Tourism Year,” and the Japan National Tourism Organization's float attracted much attention. Yamaguchi City, Yamaguchi Prefecture, which was ranked third on the
The New York Times’s

. On the same day, Japan Street Fair was also held on 72nd Street, adjacent to the parade route. Twenty-four food tents were set up to promote Japanese foods, one of Japan’s major attractions, and they drew many visitors. In addition, booths promoting tourism in Japan, a photo booth with the popular mascot Hello Kitty, and activity tents for origami, calligraphy, yo-yo fishing, and other activities provided New Yorkers with opportunities to enjoy and learn about Japanese culture. As for charity activities, we raised $7,000 to Noto Peninsula Earthquake relief.

About "Margam"
Margam
refers to the path of discovery through dance and music. This captivating performance will take you on a journey of emotions, exploring the interplay between Bharatanatyam dance and Carnatic music.
Bharatanatyam, one of the oldest and most revered classical dance forms of India, is deeply rooted in tradition, yet ever-evolving in its expression. With its intricate footwork, graceful gestures (mudras), and emotive storytelling (abhinaya), Bharatanatyam is a celebration of movement and music.
The program will begin with an adrenaline-pumping
Varnam
, a signature item in Bharatanatyam, known for its complexity and energy. Choreographed by the legendary Dhananjayans, this piece in praise of Lord Ganesha showcases both technical prowess and emotional depth.
This will be followed by an expressive piece that delves into the inner emotional landscape of the protagonist, exploring themes of longing and love.
The performance will continue with a lively
Thillana
, set in a rare 5-beat cycle. A devotional
Bhajan
will offer a meditative and soul-stirring conclusion to this artistic experience.
We look forward to sharing this memorable afternoon with you.

Pre-Concert Lecture - 6:30 pm - Christopher Preston Thompson, Director of Concordian Dawn.
Have you ever wondered what inspired Carl Orff to write his acclaimed cantata in the 1930s? Discover the answer in Polyhymnia's first collaboration with the medieval ensemble Concordian Dawn. We will present selections from the iconic collection of 254 poems discovered in the library of Benediktbeuern in Bavaria in 1803. These poems, some familiar and some less so, are set to popular songs of the 12th and 13th centuries. They reveal an international cross-border connection and collaboration among religious establishments, courts, and the Goliards—itinerant scholars and clerics who wrote much of the poetry. The subject matter ranges from sexually explicit depictions of love and romance to celebrations of tavern life and bold satire directed at the established church. Join us for a lively celebration of medieval music for voices and instruments that you won't want to miss!
We want everyone to be able to enjoy our concerts, and we understand that not everyone may be able to afford the published ticket prices. If you would like a ticket to one of our concerts, don't hesitate to contact info@polyhymnia-nyc.org, and we will arrange for a pay-as-you-will or free ticket. Rest assured that our arrangements are strictly confidential.
