The Man who Photobombed de Gaulle with Gary Younge | Victoria Gallery & Museum
May 16, 2025 (UTC+1)ENDED
Liverpool
As the nation commemorates the 80th anniversary of the Second World War, renowned journalist, author and broadcaster Gary Younge returns to WoWFEST to highlight how black people, despite the huge role that they played in WW11, have been written out of the story. The 80th anniversary of the Liberation of Paris offers an opportunity to explore the discrepancy between race-based mythologies around the Second World War and Black involvement in the war and what that tells us about Europe as a whole and how Black people’s presence here is misunderstood. Gary asks how conversations about responsibility, patriotism, immigration, integration, equality, and justice would be understood if the contribution of black people was written back in rather than written out, and their role fully acknowledged?
Gary Younge
is an award-winning author, broadcaster and a professor of sociology at the University of Manchester. Formerly a columnist at The Guardian, he has written six books, most recently Dispatches From the Diaspora. Winner of the 2023 Orwell Prize for Journalism and the 2025 Robert. B. Silvers Prize for Journalism, he has written for the New York Review of Books, Granta, GQ and The New Statesman, among others, and made radio and television documentaries on subjects ranging from gay marriage to Brexit. His fifth book, Another Day in the Death of America, won the J. Anthony Lukas Prize from Columbia School of Journalism and Nieman Foundation.

It also offers insight into the making of the artworks, which draw on academic research, historical archives, and museum collections.
The Singh Twins will be in conversation
Bryan Biggs,
Director of Cultural Legacies at the Bluecoat. The will discussion will be illustrated with images from the ‘Slaves of Fashion’ series and followed by a signing of the

An Evening with David Swift and Anthony Quinn | 12 College Ln
May 20, 2025 (UTC+1)ENDED
Liverpool
We are delighted to welcome
David Swift
and
Anthony Quinn
to hear all about their latest releases,
Scouse Republic
and
The Mouthless Dead
.
Scouse Republic:
Liverpool is a unique city within the United Kingdom; its dialect, hedonism, friendliness, rejection of 'Englishness' and, most pertinently, its politics, all make for a rich cultural landscape. Yet, many of the things that make Liverpool the city it is today were not always at the fore. Furthermore, the complexity of the city, and an investigation into all aspects of its past, has not been readily available - until now.
In Scouse Republic, David Swift expertly tracks the city's transformation from a humble village to a central component of the transatlantic slave trade and one of the most important ports in the world; from a stronghold of working-class Toryism to a bastion of left-wing politics, and analyses how the two manifest today. Swift interrogates the myths surrounding the city, offering a fully rounded perspective that considers both Liverpool's triumphs and tragedies, cleverly demonstrating how its remarkable evolution has added to the city's distinctive status. After all, in order to understand Liverpool, we need to understand its idiosyncrasies - all of which are key to comprehending modern Britain today, particularly in relation to racism, empire, deindustrialisation, immigration, popular culture and more.
Interspersed with personal anecdotes from Swift, who was born and bred in Liverpool, Scouse Republic is the untold history of one of the UK's most iconic cities. Brilliantly researched and deeply compelling, it illustrates that there is far more to Liverpool than meets the eye.
The Mouthless Dead:
One night in 1931 William Wallace was handed a phone message at his chess club from a Mr Qualtrough, asking him to meet at an address to discuss some work. Wallace caught a tram from the home he shared with his wife, Julia, to the address which turned out, after Wallace had consulted passers-by and even a policeman, to not exist.
On returning home two hours later he found his wife beaten to death in the parlour. The elaborate nature of his alibi pointed to Wallace as the culprit. He was arrested and tried, found guilty of murder and sentenced to hang, but the next month the Court of Criminal Appeal sensationally overturned the verdict and he walked free. The killer was never found.
Fifteen years on, the inspector who worked the case is considering it once more. Speculation continues to be rife over the true killer's identity. James Agate in his diary called it 'the perfect murder', Raymond Chandler said 'The case is unbeatable. It will always be unbeatable'. And on a cruise in 1947, new information is about to come to light.
