To highlight the vast range of works on paper, the department organizes four rotations a year in the Robert Wood Johnson, Jr. Gallery. Each installation is the product of a collaboration among curators and consists of up to 100 objects grouped by artist, technique, style, period, or subject.

Witnessing Humanity: The Art of John Wilson | The Metropolitan Museum of Art
Sep 20, 2025–Feb 8, 2026 (UTC-5)
New York
For over six decades, the American artist John Wilson (1922–2015) made powerful and poetic works that reflected his life as a Black American artist and his ongoing quest for racial, social, and economic justice. Wilson's art reflected and responded to the turbulent times in which he lived. His subjects included racial violence, labor, the writings of Richard Wright, the Civil Rights Movement, street scenes, and intimate images of family life, with a particular focus on fatherhood. Despite the power of his art and the continuing relevance of the themes he explored, Wilson’s work has not received the recognition it deserves.

Afterlives: Contemporary Art in the Byzantine Crypt | The Metropolitan Museum of Art
Mar 1, 2025–Jan 10, 2027 (UTC-5)
New York
Artists and artisans have been intrigued and inspired by the topic of death and visions of life thereafter for millennia. Afterlives: Contemporary Art in the Byzantine Crypt brings together modern-day works that reckon with death and visualize the afterlife and Byzantine Egyptian funeral art and artifacts in part of the Mary and Michael Jaharis Galleries known as the Byzantine Crypt (Gallery 302). The intimate and enchanting gallery with exposed brick walls and arched portals was unveiled in the year 2000 after a renovation that reclaimed the space beneath the Museum’s Grand Staircase. In this transhistorical presentation, the Byzantine Crypt’s religious and secular jewelry, textiles, ivory objects, vessels, and architectural sculpture from Early Christian and Coptic monastic sites are complemented and enriched by contemporary sculptures, works on paper, and installations from the 1960s to present day that similarly serve as memorials, reliquaries, and tokens to ward off evil.

Superfine: Tailoring Black Style | The Metropolitan Museum of Art
May 10–Oct 26, 2025 (UTC-5)
New York
The Costume Institute’s spring 2025 exhibition will present a cultural and historical examination of the Black dandy, from the figure’s emergence in Enlightenment Europe during the 18th century to today’s incarnations in cities around the world.
Inspired by Guest Curator Monica L. Miller’s 2009 book Slaves to Fashion: Black Dandyism and the Styling of Black Diasporic Identity, the exhibition will explore the importance of sartorial style to the formation of Black identities in the Atlantic diaspora. Historically, the term dandy was used to describe someone—often a man—who is extremely devoted to style and approaches it as a discipline. Dandyism was initially imposed on Black men in 18th-century Europe as the Atlantic slave trade and an emerging culture of consumerism created a trend of fashionably dressed, or dandified, servants. Dandyism offered Black people an opportunity to use clothing, gesture, irony, and wit to transform their given identities and imagine new ways of embodying political and social possibilities.
The exhibition will tell the Black dandy’s story over time through a range of media, such as garments and accessories, drawings and prints, and paintings, photographs, film excerpts, and more. Taken together, these narratives offer a history and description of Black dandyism as a discrete phenomenon that reflects broader issues of power and race in the Black diaspora.

Clara Istlerová: A Life Among Letters with Anežka Minaříková | The Rose Auditorium, in Cooper Union's New Academic Building
Jul 14, 2025 (UTC-5)
New York
Join us for a talk by Anežka Minaříková on the making of Clara Istlerová: A Life Among Letters (Inventory Press, 2025), the first English-language publication dedicated to Czech graphic designer Clara Istlerová (b. 1944). A pioneering figure in Czech graphic design, Istlerová is celebrated for her distinctive book covers, calligraphy, and expressive use of type that helped shape the visual culture of postwar Czechoslovakia. At the heart of the book is a candid conversation between Istlerová and Minaříková, unfolding across decades of cultural and political transformation. With contributions from design historian Jan Rous and graphic designer Zuzana Lednická, and featuring rare archival material, the book offers an intimate portrait of a woman whose work quietly defined an era. In this talk, Minaříková will share the process of bringing the book to life—from her first encounters with Istlerová’s work to the interviews, archival research, and editorial design. The result is not only a tribute to Istlerová’s lasting contributions to the field, but also a broader meditation on design as a cultural and collaborative practice. Anežka Minaříková (b. 1993, Prague) is a Czech graphic designer and visual artist based in New York. Her work explores the edges of graphic design through experiments with typography, storytelling, technology, and cross-disciplinary collaboration. She is the author of Clara Istlerová: A Life Among Letters (Inventory Press, 2025) and editor of Mysterious Letters (Letter Books, 2023), a collection of essays and interviews on the Voynich Manuscript. Minaříková holds a BA from the Academy of Arts, Architecture, and Design in Prague and an MFA from the Yale School of Art. From 2022 to 2024, she was a resident at Google Creative Lab. She recently co-founded an independent design studio with her husband and creative partner, Marek Nedelka.
