Come join us for an unforgettable evening! 7:00pm patio open 8:00pm concert and food pairings Johannes Brahms: String Quintet No. 2 in G major, Op. 111 Jacques Chailley: Improvisation à Deux Moe Weisner: The Hang for String Quintet and Bassoon (World Premiere) Jessie Montgomery: Strum (String Quartet) Jean Françaix: Divertissement for Bassoon and String Quintet About the Music A rich variety of different musical styles are represented in this wide-ranging program, from early romantic to contemporary. Brahms' String Quintet in G Major captures the seasoned sound of the great composer near the end of his career. The viola quintet drew inspiration from Vienna's Prater Park and finds new scenic expression in this natural setting. Chailley work brings classical conversation between violin and viola into the 20th Century while Montgomery's Strum delivers a lively and rhymically complex 21st-century vibe by way of string quintet characteristic of a composer recognized just this year with a Grammy. We come literally to present day with the world premiere of The Hang for String Quintet and Bassoon composed for this setting by the evening's bassist, Moe Weisner. Jean Françaix also brings the bassoon out to play in his both dramatic and amusing tour de force and we have brought bassoonist, Michael Quigley, out to play for you from Eastern Canada. In 2017, he accepted positions with String Orchestra of the Rockies, Symphony Tacoma, and Yakima Symphony, as their new assistant concertmaster. Michael Quigley (bassoon) Michael Quigley is a passionate, Montreal-born bassoonist currently living in Toronto. He began learning the bassoon in high school, and was eventually inspired by his band director, to continue with the instrument after graduation. In 2023, Michael completed his Master’s degree at the Manhattan School of Music in New York, where he studied with the principal bassoon of the Metropolitan Opera, William Short. About the food Ruth True Drawing inspiration from the musical program, host Ruth True has created a fun and delectable pairing menu for the occasion. Her manifold exploits have included operating her own catering company, originated an eco-conscious mercantile, and producing her expansive podcast Mindful Consuming. Ruth’s deep appreciation and support for the arts led her to co-found Western Bridge, a gallery in the industrial SODO district in south Seattle in 2004. And she has graciously opened the doors of her one-of-a-kind glass house for this one-of-a-kind event. Please contact for any dietary constraints or accessibility needs.
