Limited closed mic spaces available, email greatpublishing@yahoo.com to secure Great Publishing Company LLC in partnership with Northern Virginia Fine Arts Association invites you to start the year off right with poetry and poets. Join us for the 6th DON’T LET IT HAPPEN TO POETRY! Saturday, January 4, 2025, doors open at 6:30, at The Athenaeum 201 Prince Street Alexandria, Virginia - curated by Northern VA Fine Arts Association Poet In Residence, KaNikki Jakarta Network with like-minded artists in anticipation of a great poetic year. CLOSED MIC REGISTRATION $15 EARLY BIRD TICKETS $15 GENERAL ADMISSION $20 The History: On Saturday, January 5, 2008, in Hyattsville, Maryland, Great Publishing Company, LLC presented DON'T LET IT HAPPEN TO POETRY. Inspired by Kuroji Ntu's poem of the same name, we gathered in a spirit of creative comradery and 25 poets poured their heARTs onto the stage. Nostalgia struck, via a post of the list of performers from that night on social media, and we were reminded of the multifaceted gift that poetry has been to us as lovers of the art and through us as creatives of the same. You asked us to recreate it, so January 5, 2019, we did in a sold-out room at Kora Restaurant with 25 more poets on the list. In an effort in not letting “it” happen to poetry we continue with a reminder that we wish to share with you as a lover and creator of poetry. You loved it, so we brought it back again on January 11, 2020, at The Morrison house. We skipped it in 2021 (You know why) and brought it back again to The Morrison House on January 22, 2022. In 2023 we welcomed poets in February in Delray Virginia. In 2025 on January 4th we welcome you to join us at The Athenaeum, a beautiful gallery in the heart of Alexandria 201 Prince Street at 6:30 pm. Book: “Paris in Ruins: Love, War, and the Birth of Impressionism” by Sebastian Smee Facilitator: Marshall CarolusMeeting Date: Saturday, January 11, 10am-12pm “The Pulitzer Prize–winning art critic’s gripping account of the “Terrible Year” in Paris and its monumental impact on the rise of Impressionism. From the summer of 1870 to the spring of 1871, famously dubbed the “Terrible Year” by Victor Hugo, Paris and its people were besieged, starved, and forced into surrender by Germans―then imperiled again as radical republicans established a breakaway Commune, ultimately crushed by the French Army after bloody street battles and the burning of central Paris. As renowned art critic Sebastian Smee shows, it was against the backdrop of these tumultuous times that the Impressionist movement was born―in response to violence, civil war, and political intrigue. In stirring and exceptionally vivid prose, Smee tells the story of those dramatic days through the eyes of great figures of Impressionism. Édouard Manet, Berthe Morisot, and Edgar Degas were trapped in Paris during the siege and deeply enmeshed in its politics. Others, including Pierre-August Renoir and Frédéric Bazille, joined regiments outside of the capital, while Claude Monet and Camille Pissarro fled the country just in time. In the aftermath, these artists developed a newfound sense of the fragility of life. That feeling for transience―reflected in Impressionism’s emphasis on fugitive light, shifting seasons, glimpsed street scenes, and the impermanence of all things―became the movement’s great contribution to the history of art.” —W. W. Norton & Company, Publisher The Creative Book Club meets on select Saturday mornings to discuss readings by a variety of authors. The club is drop-in, free, and open to all who are interested in keeping their creative muse flowing and connecting with other creative people. “Paris in Ruins: Love, War, and the Birth of Impressionism” by Sebastian Smee Information Source: Del Ray Artisans | eventbrite

Arts Craft
Get ready to laugh and lather as you create your own humorous soaps (winking owls, poop emojis, wacky animals, and more). Learn about melt-and-pour techniques using a moisturizing shea butter base, premium fragrance oils, and fun, skin-safe colorants. Bright colors, fun scents, and a dash of whimsy will bring your designs to life. While soaps harden, decorate a gift box to take your creations home with you at the end of this workshop. Instructor: Suzan Ok Shumate. Class size: 4-10 participants. No experience necessary. Register by midnight on January 15. Refund Policy If a workshop does not reach the minimum number of students within 2 days of the workshop, it may be cancelled at the instructor’s discretion. If you are already registered (and have paid) for a workshop that is cancelled, your whole registration amount will be refunded. If you request to withdraw from a workshop 72 hours or more before the day of the workshop, Del Ray Artisans will refund the Workshop Fee and any Supply Fee minus a 15% processing fee.No refunds will be provided for cancellations less than 72 hours before the day of the workshop.
