BREAKING GROUND | Oxford University Museum of Natural History
Oct 18, 2024–Sep 29, 2025 (UTC)
Oxford
Through the expansive finding of fossils and development of new techniques and methods, the 19th century transformed our understanding of the history of Earth. Breaking Ground explores these themes through William Buckland, geologist and palaeontologist, and Mary Buckland (née Morland), a scientific illustrator, the couple at the heart of this exhibition. They both helped to establish new scientific methods and ideas, which led to fascinating discoveries in palaeontology, including the first ever dinosaur to be named to science.

All The Small Things Miniaturisation in Insects | Oxford University Museum of Natural History
Mar 27–May 27, 2025 (UTC)
Oxford
Think of the smallest insect that you’ve seen. An ant? A flea? Perhaps you’ve encountered something so minute that it was utterly unrecognisable. This is surprisingly likely, as well over 100 insect families contain species measuring less than 1 mm in length.
The tiniest of these insects are smaller than some single-celled organisms, measuring mere tenths of a millimetre! Being so small, micro insects must navigate strange worlds almost entirely alien to us, negotiating viscous air, electrostatic forces, micro-climates, surface tensions and capillary action. They are affected by the slightest change and yet also able to thrive, often unnoticed and unseen, as some of the most speciose organisms on the planet.
Despite extreme reductions in size, micro insects retain an incredible degree of complexity, exhibiting amazing life histories and rule-bending adaptations. You can see an example in this case: the ‘Featherwing Beetle’, Nephanes titan, which is seemingly capable of associative learning despite having a brain with fewer than 10,000 neurons; a human brain contains approximately 86 billion neurons. Insects like this can be studied as models to further our understanding of a wide range of subjects, from bio-inspired micro technology to genetics, anatomy and neurobiology.
Excitingly, with more technologies and resources at our fingertips than ever before, it’s becoming easier and easier to focus on the little things.

2-Day High Fired Glazes for Wood Firing Course with Claude Aussage | Oxford Kilns
Mar 15, 2025 (UTC+0)ENDED
Oxford
2-Day Glazes for Wood Firing Workshop 15 & 16 March 2025 We’re excited to offer a two-day course on glazes designed specifically for wood-firing at stoneware temperatures, led by renowned French ceramic artist and kiln firer Claude Aussage. This intensive workshop delves into the chemistry and techniques required to create glazes that thrive in the unique conditions of wood-fired kilns, with a particular focus on the high-fired stoneware range. Claude’s course covers essential topics such as: • Understanding glaze chemistry: The role of fluxes, silica, and alumina in achieving the desired melting behavior and surface qualities under wood-firing conditions. • Developing glaze recipes: How to adjust base recipes to enhance the ash interaction and atmospheric effects characteristic of wood-fired surfaces. • Testing and refining: Techniques for small-batch glaze testing, firing analysis, and adapting glazes to specific kilns and clays. This workshop precedes a five-day kiln-building and firing course, giving participants the opportunity to expand their expertise further by applying their glazes in practice. Attendees are welcome to enroll in any of the courses individually or as a combined learning experience. Having Claude in the UK is a rare and valuable opportunity. His expertise and passion make each session a unique event, providing both inspiration and practical skills. He returns periodically to share his knowledge, and every visit feels like a special occasion for our ceramics community. Whether you’re just beginning to explore high-fired glazes or are looking to refine your wood-firing techniques, this is an unparalleled opportunity to learn from a master of the craft in a hands-on, collaborative setting.

FASTFIRE KILN BUILDING 5-Day Course with Claude Aussage | Oxford Kilns
Mar 17, 2025 (UTC+0)ENDED
Oxford
Fastfiring Kiln Building Course 17-21 March 2025 £750.00 SAVE YOUR PLACE NOW £50 Your Eventbrite booking allows you to book a place. Once you have booked a place we will contact you to arrange a payment link for the balance of your course payment. Returning to Oxford Kilns, we have our next dates for our Fastfiring Kiln Building Course. This course is led by Claude Aussage, one of Europe's leading kiln builders. This is a wood-firing kiln of his own design, developed from decades of kiln building across the world, and adapted in the light of over a hundred firings at Oxford to meet the conditions and requirements of our kilnsite. These are the really excellent fastfire kilns, that are in almost constant use at Oxford Kilns, and on which we run our woodfiring courses. These kilns are highly adaptable, and will fire on scrap wood to 1300 degrees/cone 12 in reducing conditions over 8 to14 hours. They can produce an excellent array of wood-fired effects. The course consists of a kiln build and a first firing. It includes lectures on kilns, woodfiring and ceramics and is co-taught by Dr Robin WIlson, director of Oxford Kilns, ceramic artist, anthopologist and archaeologist. Robin has a decade of leading a high paced programme of firings at Oxford, evolving the firing techniques rapidly to make the very best of the kilns and wood. You will be able to bring your own pots and fire them in the kiln you build. There is free camping on site, with hot showers and an out-door kitchen, or you can arrange your own accommodation locally. There are a large number of local AirB&Bs. Limited accommodation at our fieldstudy centre in the Woods is also available for those booking early in advance. Usually firing teams cook and eat communally on site, which we will arrange nearer the time. For help and advice, contact Dr Robin Wilson of Oxford Kilns.

CARRION CROW - Heather Parry in conversation with Lara Williams | Blackwell's Bookshop
Mar 19, 2025 (UTC+0)ENDED
Oxford
We can't wait to welcome Heather Parry to the shop to discussion her claustrophobic, captivating new novel CARRION CROW,about a young woman locked away in the attic to preserve her family's name. Heather will be in conversation with Lara Williams, author of Supper Club and The Odyssey. Doors: 6.30pm, starts: 6.45pm Tickets are £4. Admission is free when purchasing a copy the book. About the book: There are some facts about the world that only your mother can teach you.
Marguerite had been confined for the sake of her wellbeing.
That's what her mother had said.
Marguerite Périgord is locked in the attic of her family home, a towering Chelsea house overlooking the stinking Thames. Her mother is concerned that Marguerite's engagement to a much older, near-penniless solicitor, will drag the family name into disrepute and this simply won't do. For company Marguerite has a sewing machine, Mrs Beeton's Book of Household Management and a carrion crow who has come to nest in the rafters. Restless, she spends her waning energies on the fascinations of her own body, memorising Mrs Beeton's advice and longing for her life outside. As Marguerite's patience turns into rage, the boundaries of her mind and body start to fray. Probably one of the best books I've read this year! It felt like an unholy mix of Ottessa Moshfegh and Leonora Carrington, whilst still being very much its own thing … I loved it - Julia Armfield, author of Private Rites and Our Wives Under The Sea About the author: Heather Parry is a Glasgow-based writer and editor, originally from South Yorkshire. Her debut novel, Orpheus Builds a Girl, was shortlisted for the Saltire Society Fiction Book of the Year Award and longlisted for the Polari First Book Prize. She is also the author of a short story collection, This Is My Body, Given For You, and her first nonfiction book, Electric Dreams: On Sex Robots and the Failed Promises of Capitalism, was released in 2024 as part of 404 Ink’s Inklings series. If you cannot make the event but would like a dedicated copy of the book, please email events.manchester@blackwell.co.uk or call us on 0161 274 3331. Our event format is usually a 45 minute discussion between the author and interviewer, followed by a chance for audience members to ask questions. There will be the opportunity to get your book signed/dedicated after the event. Events are a brilliant opportunity to discover new books, meet authors and likeminded readers and learn something new. THE POSSIBILITY OF TENDERNESS: Jason Allen-Paisant in conversation | Blackwell's Bookshop
Mar 24, 2025 (UTC+0)ENDED
Oxford
We are so excited to welcome Jason Allen-Paisant to the shop in collaboration with the Centre for New Writing to celebrate the publication of The Possibility of Tenderness: A Jamaican Memoir of Plants and Dreams. Doors: 6.30pm, starts: 6.45pm Tickets are £4. Admission is free when purchasing a copy the book. About the book: THE POSSIBILITY OF TENDERNESS is the first work of non-fiction from multi award-winning Jamaican poet Jason Allen-Paisant, a personal history narrated through the lens of the ‘grung’ and plants. It’s also a people’s history of the land, a family saga, an archival detective story through time. It’s the migration tale of a young scholar who arrives in Britain from rural Jamaica to study at Oxford to achieve ‘upward social mobility’ and who now lives in Roundhay Leeds. Suddenly, amidst his journey of dreams and class aspiration, the plants and people of his native district, Coffee Grove, begin to offer different ways of living, alternative dreams, and the possibility of tenderness and the permission to roam England. Marrying the local and the familial with global history and unfolding as a timely and immersive tale of land, environment, and the world of plants, The Possibility of Tenderness reveals how the history of a tiny rural village in a mountainous region of Jamaica is interlinked with that of modern Britain. And, also what that rural village can teach us about leisure, land ownership and reclamation today. About the author: Jason Allen-Paisant is a Jamaican writer and multi-award-winning poet. He is the author of two critically acclaimed books of poetry, Thinking with Trees and Self-Portrait as Othello, which won the UK’s two most prestigious poetry awards for 2023 — the Forward Prize and T.S. Eliot Prize. He is also a Professor of Critical Theory and Creative Writing at the University of Manchester and Associate Editor of Callaloo Literary Journal. Tickets are £4.00. Admission is free when purchasing a copy of the book. CNW Writer Fellows 2025: Daisy Hildyard & Padraig Regan | Blackwell's Bookshop
Mar 4, 2025 (UTC+0)ENDED
Oxford
Join us for an evening of readings and discussion with the University of Manchester's Centre for New Writing 2025 Writer Fellows Daisy Hildyard and Padraig Regan. Doors: 6.30pm, starts: 6.45pm Tickets are £4. Admission is free when purchasing a copy the book. About the books: EMERGENCY is a novel about the dissolving boundaries between all life on earth. Stuck at home alone under lockdown, a woman recounts her 1990s childhood in rural Yorkshire. She watches a kestrel hunting, helps a farmer with a renegade bull, and plays out with her best friend, Clare. Around her in the village her neighbours are arguing, keeping secrets, caring for one another, trying to hold down jobs. In the woods and quarry there are foxcubs fighting, plants competing for space, ageing machines, and a three-legged deer who likes cake. These local phenomena interconnect and spread out from China to Nicaragua as pesticides circulate, money flows around the planet, and bodies feel the force of distant power. A story of remote violence and a work of praise for a persistently lively world, brilliantly written, surprising, evocative and unsettling, Daisy Hildyard's Emergency reinvents the pastoral novel for the climate change era. The poems of SOME INTEGRITY bring something new to the Irish lyric tradition. Queerness is a way of looking, a perspective, grounded in an awareness of the porous and provisional nature of our bodies. The book's social encounters and exchanges, its responses to the work of artists, its figures in a landscape, and its considerations of food and desire, work as capsule narratives and as an exhilarating extension of that lyric tradition. About the authors: Daisy Hildyard is author of two novels – Emergency (2022) and Hunters in the Snow (2014) – and one work of nonfiction, The Second Body (2017). She lives in the north of England. Padraig Regan's debut Collection Some Integrity was published by Carcanet in 2022 and was awarded the Clarissa Luard Award and shortlisted for the Forward Prize for Best First Collection. They are the author of two poetry pamphlets: Delicious (Lifeboat, 2016) and Who Seemed Alive & Altogether Real (Emma Press, 2017). In 2015, they were a recipient of an Eric Gregory Award, and in 2020 they were awarded the Ireland Chair of Poetry Bursary Prize. They hold a PhD on creative-critical and hybridised writing practices in medieval texts and the work of Anne Carson from the Seamus Heaney Centre, Queen's University Belfast, where they were a Ciaran Carson Writing and the City Fellow in 2021. They were Fellow Commoner in Creative Arts at Trinity College Cambridge from 2022- 2024. Tickets are £4.00. Admission is free when purchasing a copy of either of the books. If you cannot make the event but would like a dedicated copy of a book, please email events.manchester@blackwell.co.uk or call us on 0161 274 3331.
