LaSelvaSelvaggia: From Diminution to the Stylus Phantasticus
The new Italian styles of instrumental music that crossed the Alps in the early Baroque--deemed to be improvisatory, wild, bizarre--were identified as the 'stylus phantasticus' (the fantastic style) by German theorists. At the same time, these “new” styles were largely grounded in older practices: namely the improvisation of diminutions (a form of florid ornamentation). This program explores the fertile ground in which these seeds of Renaissance improvisation grew into the early Baroque sonata and toccata. Enjoy music by Palestrina, Domenico Ferrabosco, Fontana, de Rore, Castello and others!

Hollywood Scandal! Edith Head and Celanese “Star in Crepe” | Pasadena Museum of History
Dec 12, 2024 (UTC-8)ENDED
Pasadena
Hollywood Scandal! Edith Head and Celanese “Star in Crepe”Thursday, December 12 | 7:00 pm A fashionable Hollywood scandal – what could be more scintillating? Kevin Jones, Senior Curator at the ASU FIDM Museum in downtown Los Angeles and sleuth of this story, takes us on a journey through the murky, mysterious history of a collection of fabulous 1930s-1940s-era film costumes. In 1960, rayon manufacturer Celanese teamed with Paramount Pictures’ Academy Award-winning costume designer Edith Head to launch a new synthetic material branded “Star in Crepe” by showcasing eleven original crepe gowns from Hollywood’s Golden Era in fashion shows held around the United States. In 1990, the gown collection came as a loan to FIDM from the City of Los Angeles, after being stored in an abandoned city jail for more than twenty years. Here, the plot thickens. While dressing the gowns for an exhibition, some of them did not look as they appeared in publicity photos. Half of the gowns looked spurious! Were these the same garments? Had they been altered? Are they the same gowns used for the Celanese promotion? If not, which famous dresses are these? Who were the legendary leading ladies who wore these beautiful creations? Curator/detective Kevin Jones clues us in on the unfolding drama. Presentation will begin at 7:00 pm; PMH Galleries will be open for viewing at 6:00 pm. Space is limited; advance reservations required. Image: Costume designer Edith Head. Photofest

1,000 Words Writing Workshop with Jami Attenberg | Vroman's Bookstore
Jan 16, 2025 (UTC-8)ENDED
Pasadena
Inspired by Jami Attenberg’s wildly popular literary movement #1000WordsofSummer, this workshop will use the practice eventually laid out in the book 1,000 Words as a jumping off point to inspire creativity in writers. In 2018, novelist Jami Attenberg, faced with a looming deadline, needed writing inspiration. Using a bootcamp model, she and a friend set out to write one thousand words daily for two weeks straight. They opened this practice to Attenberg’s online community and soon hundreds then thousands of people started using the #1000WordsofSummer hashtag to track their work and support one another. What began as a simple challenge between two friends has become a literary movement—write 1,000 words per day without judgement, or bias, or concerns about writer’s block, and see what comes of it. 1000 Words is the book-length extension of this movement. It is about becoming—and staying—motivated, discovering yourself and your creative desires, and approaching your craft from a new direction. It features advice from more than fifty well-known writers, including New York Times bestsellers, Pulitzer Prize winners, and stars of the literary world. Framing these letters are words of wisdom and encouragement, plus specific strategies, from Attenberg on how to carve out a creative path for yourself all year round. Paired with vibrant word art illustrations, 1000 Words is an accessible and motivational craft book that allows you to open any page and get a quick and fulfilling hit of inspiration. A reading of Attenberg's latest novel A Reason to See You Again will follow the workshop at 7pm

Pasadena
The New York Times bestselling author of In Five Years and One Italian Summer returns with “a romantic gem” (Laura Dave, New York Times bestselling author) about a young woman who decides to finally live for herself rather than rely on the universe for answers. Daphne Bell believes the universe has a plan for her. Every time she meets a new man, she receives a slip of paper with his name and a number on it—the exact amount of time they will be together. The papers told her she’d spend three days with Martin in Paris; five weeks with Noah in San Francisco; and three months with Hugo, her ex-boyfriend turned best friend. Daphne has been receiving the numbered papers for over twenty years, always wondering when there might be one without an expiration. Finally, the night of a blind date at her favorite Los Angeles restaurant, there’s only a name: Jake. But as Jake and Daphne’s story unfolds, Daphne finds herself doubting the paper’s prediction, and wrestling with what it means to be both committed and truthful. Because Daphne knows things Jake doesn’t, information that—if he found out—would break his heart. “Daphne’s sometimes heart-wrenching, often heartwarming search for meaningful relationships, both romantic and platonic, is sure to inspire” (Publishers Weekly, starred review) new and longtime fans of Rebecca Serle.
