From January to March each year, communities across the Shetland Islands gather for a series of spectacular and unique fire festivals. The Up Helly Aa Fire Festival is one of the Shetland Islands' largest annual celebrations. Inspired by the Shetland Islands' Viking history, communities from all over the islands come together, dressed in costumes throughout the night, carrying burning torches through the streets and dancing to traditional Shetland music. While these festivals are mostly community-led, people from all over the world come to witness them. The largest fire festival is the Lerwick Up Helly Aa, held on the last Tuesday of January each year.
