Celebration
There's no better place in Thailand to experience Loy Krathong than in the ancient city of Sukhothai, its birthplace. Every year, the former capital transforms into a dazzling wonderland of candlelight, cultural heritage, and celebration. In 2025, Sukhothai Loy Krathong takes place from October 27 to November 5, showcasing 10 unforgettable nights of light, sound, and tradition under the full moon. Nowhere else in Sukhothai does Loy Krathong celebrate like it. With over 700 years of history, this ancient festival celebrates the Goddess of Water and is steeped in rich cultural heritage. A unique part of the celebration is Phao Thian Len Fai—the lighting of candles and flames as a sign of respect. This tradition has become a symbol of Thai identity and cultural pride. The event brings families and communities together through traditional crafts and storytelling. You'll see elaborate displays of krathongs (floating offerings), sky lanterns, and even historical reenactments from the time of King Ramkhamhaeng – all of which radiate the same message of gratitude, unity, and letting go.
