Hammer & Tongue Poetry Slam | The Walrus

Sep 2, 2025 (UTC+1)
Brighton and Hove
Arts Literary Arts
An evening of exhilarating spoken word at Brighton's longest-running poetry slam. Featuring Naomi Wood , Amy Baker and last time's sl am winner, Gray Taylor , and hosted by the hilarious Leanne Shorley in the glorious Tusk Club @ The Walrus. Doors open at 7pm and the show starts at 8pm. HOW TO SLAM: ‘Performer Tickets’ are now SOLD OUT for 2nd September. If you’d like to come along as an audience member and be on the slam reserve list, please let us know at the door on the night - often, a couple of slammers can’t make it, so it’s definitely worth a go! If you are performing in the slam, please prepare an original poem of 3 minutes or less (no music, no props). Any style, any theme, anything you want! It doesn’t have to be memorised and you’re more than welcome to read from paper/your phone. NAOMI WOOD is a spoken word performer and theatre maker, celebrating rebellion and revelling in rage whilst maintaining a healthy preoccupation with the eroticism of bird feeders. Her solo spoken word show 'Gobbess' - which is touring the UK and internationally, has been to Edinburgh Fringe, Glastonbury Festival and Oslo. It has been described as 'Laugh-out-loud funny...pure magic...unmissable'. (Discover Brighton) and 'An act of creative mastery' (UCLAN). Naomi has been published by Backlash Press and Ink, Sweat and Tears and was recently shortlisted for The Bournemouth Writing Prize. GRAY TAYLOR is a Brighton based poet originally from Derby, who has a musical background in hip hop, grime and RnB. He discovered poetry after attending an event at Brighton Dome called “Status Flo” hosted by AFLO.the poet. Gray describes his poetry style as “Conversational, punchline, storytelling” with focus on poems being thought provoking, relatable, fun and easy on the ear. Please be aware the performance space is in a basement which is only accessible via a flight of stairs. There is space to store wheelchairs / a mobility scooter on the ground floor. Assistance dogs are welcome. Information Source: Hammer & Tongue Brighton | eventbrite

The tortured poet. The rebellious scientist. The monstrous artist. The tech disruptor. You can tell what a society values by who it labels as a genius. You can also tell who it excludes, who it enables, and what it is prepared to tolerate . Taking us from the Renaissance Florence of Leonardo da Vinci to the Floridian rocket launches of Elon Musk’s SpaceX, Helen Lewis unravels a word that we all use — without really questioning what it means. Along the way, she uncovers the secret of the Beatles’ success, asks how biographers should solve the Austen Problem, and reveals why Stephen Hawking thought IQ tests were for losers (before taking one herself). And she asks if the modern idea of genius — a class of special people — is distorting our view of the world. Helen Lewis will be 'In Conversation' with Rafael Behr , and she will also be signing copies of her new book, The Genius Myth , which will be available to purchase on the night. AUTHOR BIOGRAPHY Helen Lewis is a staff writer at The Atlantic who writes about politics and culture. Her first book, Difficult Women: A History of Feminism in 11 Fights , was a Sunday Times bestseller and a Guardian , Telegraph and Financial Times book of the year. She is the writer and presenter of the BBC podcast series The New Gurus and Helen Lewis Has Left the Chat , and co-host of Radio 4’s Strong Message Here , with Armando Iannucci. CHAIR BIOGRAPHY Rafael Behr is a political columnist for the Guardian . He is a former Political Editor for the New Statesman , Chief Leader Writer and Online Editor for The Observer , a business news reporter for BBC online and a foreign correspondent for the Financial Times , based in the Baltic region and Russia. Rafael is a regular contributor to Prospect Magazine , a guest on BBC and Sky News and a speaker at UK think tanks, and he also hosts the Politics on the Couch podcast. Thinking of coming with friends? Why not add to your special night out and enjoy the show in the comfort of a private booth and table . Booths are available for 4, 5 & 6 people. See the ' BOOK A BOOTH' options in the ticket sale section. You can also order a copy of Helen Lewis' new book in advance, at a discounted price*. See the TICKET+DISCOUNTED BOOK option in the tickets sale section. ( * Discounted price £18 , RRP £22. Pre-ordered book will be signed and ready for collection on the night). How Speed Dating Works in Brighton When you arrive at the Brighton venue you will be greeted by our friendly professional hosts. Once everyone has arrived and registered we will briefly explain the format of the evening. The ladies will then be asked to make their way to their allocated table. Once the ladies are seated the gentlemen will be asked to proceed to their first date. You will have 4 minutes to chat to each date, once the 4 minutes is over we will ring a bell to indicate the time is up and for the gentlemen to move to their next date. Four minutes is long enough to see if you click with the person you are talking to and whether you would like to see them again and also short enough if you don't. At the end of each date you have a brief few moments to make some notes on the person you have just dated. This is something to help jog your memory for the post event matching process the next day. Half way through the event you will have an interval break so you can nip to the toilet or top up your drink. Once all the dates are over you have the opportunity to stay on at the venue to mingle freely with others. Please remember to take your dating card home with you to assist you in entering in your ticks and potential matches. Post Event No later than 11am the following morning our matching system will be unlocked for you to enter your ticks from the previous evening. You have all day to tick as many people as you like from the night before. We guarantee you will find someone you will want to see again, otherwise we will give you your next Speed Dating event for free! Always friendly, always brilliant! Powered Up Business Networking (PUBNetworking) is an “out of hours” networking event that does away with the usual networking formalities. You’ll get to learn about the people behind the business - without a torrent of sales pitches …and bland tea and coffee. And you’ll get to have a lot of laughs whilst you’re at it! As you know, the best business connections are the people you want to spend time with outside of work. They’re the people you can trust, and whose company you enjoy. PUBNetworking is the place to find them. We have a loose structure, relaxed atmosphere and the opportunity to learn from other business experts - with no strings attached. Just bring yourself, your e-ticket and your best smile and you’re good to go. Each event has four objectives… Meet awesome people We have a wide range of business people that attend. From start-ups to those with 30 years experience - across a wide range of industries. Everyone that attends is under no obligation to attend (we have no memberships, or contracts) so they’re there purely to meet people like you. Build long-lasting relationships We believe in a 'people buy from people' philosophy. In a relaxed environment, everyone feels comfortable and the connections you make are less forced, and more genuine. You’ll get to know each person in more detail - and have a good time doing so. Learn things without pitches Each event is productive and valuable. And we want everyone to walk away having learned something new. Our speakers offer genuine value, without sneaky sales pitches. We want you to take what you learn and use it to benefit your business. Have fun And above all, we want you to have fun. Sometimes that’s easier with a drink in your hand (it also makes the terrible jokes slightly more tolerable…). Our networking events are all about you, your passions and your business success. What’s happening this month? For this meeting, our speaker is the awesome Maria Jonsson and her talk is called "Ch-ch-ch-changes: turn and face the strange with more confidence." Change is constant, fast and often overwhelming, whether you're leading it or caught up in it. We'll look at why change feels so tough and how to handle it better, using simple tools you can apply in real life to support yourself and others. Location. Held at The In On The Square, we have their upstairs function room all to ourselves. And a great selection of drinks too! Plan for the night: 7.30 - Meet, greet & network. Your chance to sign in, grab a drink and speak to anyone you’d like. 7.50 - Introduction from Claire. 7.55 - Your chance to tell the room about yourself with a PUBNetworking difference… 8.20 - 1-2-1 with someone you like. 8.35 - Grab a drink/have a break. 8.50 - Presentation from Maria. 9.15 - Close the meeting and optional further networking. 9.30 - End/move into the bar of The Inn On The Square to have a further drink should you wish. Important: Due to the nature of the venue, and room size, there are a limited number of spaces available. If you’d like to come along and enjoy a great evening of laughs, laid-back networking and actionable business help, reserve your space with an e-ticket now. Tickets cost: £14.77 (And there’s probably no better way to spend it!) See you there! Information Source: Powered Up Business Networking | eventbrite

Have you ever wanted to put your life story on paper (or laptop)? It can be daunting to know where to begin and what to include. This is where expert help can turn the process of chronicling your story (or part of your story) easier. Many people tell the course tutor, Joy Persaud, that their life is possibly not interesting or worthy enough to be written about, but, rest assured, your story is filled with unique experiences that may inspire, educate, astonish, move, and show resilience. Every story matters , whether you are famous or not. Writing your story to recognise and value what you have done can be suprisingly life-affirming and underline just how much you have achieved, been through, and learned, in your time on our planet so far. You may wish to do this for others – family, friends or the wider public – or for yourself. This course is most suited to people who are aged 35-plus, but is open to adults of all ages who are curious about the process. We'll talk about unlocking memory, biography structure, tackling difficult topics, bringing a story to life, what to keep in, what to leave out, and plenty more. There will be follow-up courses (dates TBC) to refine each of these elements, and more, and opportunites to book 1-2-1s with the course tutor so you can explore your writing in depth, in confidence. Testimonials You are better than my therapist ~ Jimmy Osmond, following a life story interview Reading it back, there's so much I now realise I have done in my life ~ biography client Thank you for helping me to capture my voice so well ~ biography client I loved my sessions with Joy - she is fun and easy to work with, offering me insights into the writing process that I use every day. She has a way of stimulating my thinking that really surprised me. She is very supportive and encouraging - she is outstanding. I can't recommend her enough ~ 1-2-1 editorial coaching client I don't normally enjoy talking about myself, but you made the process enjoyable ~ business biography client Information Source: Joy Persaud | eventbrite

What is EFT? An open circle to explore EFT (Emotional Freedom Technique aka tapping) together in a safe, non-judgemental and supportive way. EFT is a somatic and cognative release tool which focusses on the links between body and mind, helping to work through troublesome emotions and even help you understand and work with trauma (the latter in a 1:1 space rather than a circle). It helps to regulate your nervous system so that you feel more calm, in control of your emotions, and understand yourself on a deeper level. The pieces of the puzzle come together. What to expect A welcoming sharing circle Time for journaling so you can get some head space A beautiful guided meditation Movement exercises to encourage landing in the body Tapping (of course!) ***Please bring a notepad, pen and water bottle Who is it for? Everyone. In my opinion EFT should be taught at school because it’s the safest and easiest tool to use with or without a practitioner. Since it helps you understand and regulate your emotions and nervous system, I believe it is The Essential Tool every human should have in their pocket Why should I come? You’re curious about how it could help you. The idea of a sense of belonging in a group appeals to you There’s something you’d like to let go of There’s something you’d like to welcome IN to your life You want to explore your mind and feel more in control of your emotions Why work with Jess I am an intuitive energy-led practitioner that helps and guides others to heal themselves. I’ve been certified as a coach and NLP Master Practitioner since 2018 and I also use the healing modalities of reiki and sound to offer a truly unique mix of tools, tailored for my clients needs. I have used EFT for many years; when I used to struggle with sleep and anxiety, it was a close friend. Then I decided to get qualified in EFT early 2024 as I wanted to be able to use in my coaching sessions with clients. In July 2024, I suddenly found myself in hospital with sepsis; as I prepared for emergency surgery, it was EFT I turned to in the terror of staring death in the face. You are not defined by the hand you are dealt, but by how you deal with it. Tapping and coaching can help you to self-resource the answers to your perceived problems. If you have any questions please email me on hello@jessnicks.com or drop a line on instagram @jessnickscoaching for a voice note reply. no workshop 19th Oct due to illness Where are we: 🌧️ When it's raining we are in the back of the Church. When you come in the main entrance, got straight forward and then go through the door to the right of the stage. We're in the blue room! ☀️ If it's sunny and the market stalls are outside - we'll be inside the main hall of the church at the back corner --------- What we do: Each week we have a new theme, we'll always be using watercolour & collage in some way. The colours we use are really bright and amazing - not those cheap dissapointing watercolours. Once you have paid in person, or bought a ticket on eventbrite, your child can stay at the table for however long they want & make as many things they want to (although I try to encourge them to finish each one before making 100! How to turn up: You can either book on Eventbrite, or turn up on the day and pay by cash or card. Turn up any time - early is less busy If the table is full when you turn up, you may just need to wait a little while before a space becomes free - which is why coming earlier is better! While you wait you can grab a coffee from the cafe, and there's a little play area for the kids next to the art table that they can be entertained with for a while. What ages can take part? Children under 4 need an adult to help them out. Who runs the workshop? Hi I'm Zara - I run multiple watercolour workshops every week in Waterstones on Northstreet and other venues around Brighton and East Sussex. Running workshops for children is a new venture for me and I've really enjoyed it so far! In the past I have volunteered with charities working with young children and I have previously worked in a secondary school with teens. In all of my workshops the participants get to learn something as well as experiment, which in itself is really improtant for learning - and most importantly having fun! REFUNDS: Unfortunately eventbrite takes a cut of the ticket event if the ticket is refunded. Which means I would be losing money meaning I'm unable to offer a full refund. So there is a choice between these things: 1) I can transfer your ticket to a different week of your choice 2) I can refund you but it will be a few quid and pence less! Refunds and transfers must be requested at least 12 hours before the event starts. WHAT'S ON Find out what workshops are on via my live calendar on my website! You give so much. This day is for you. If you're a Professional Nurse or Midwife Advocate, chances are you've been pouring yourself into others. You hold space, offer care, and are trying to build something meaningful in your Trust. But how often do you feel like you're doing it alone? Many PNAs describe feeling isolated in their role. Maybe you're tired. Maybe you're running on empty. Maybe you're wondering when it will be your turn to receive what you offer to others. And maybe you're just desperate for a day to reconnect, restore and remember that you're not alone. This retreat day is designed to do just that. You will be in the company of an intimate, small group of other passionate, purpose-driven PNAs. You’ll spend time reflecting, resting, and recharging your body, mind and spirit. This is a rare opportunity to step out of your routine, share your story, and reconnect with the heart of why this work matters. But it’s not just about deep reflection and emotional insight. This day is also about joy, lightness and laughter. We’ll make space for genuine connection, fun moments, and playful creativity. Expect a mix of inspiration and silliness, nourishment and warmth, serious insight and spontaneous laughter. What to expect on the day Over the course of 6 hours, we will we’ll journey through the following: The Tree of Life Exercise A gentle but powerful narrative practice that invites you to reflect on your personal and professional identity. Through artwork and storytelling, you’ll explore the roots that have shaped you, the values you carry, and the hopes that guide your work. This activity builds connection, insight and a sense of shared purpose. A Nourishing Lunch and Coastal Walk We’ll enjoy a proper lunch together—no rushed bites at a desk. Afterwards, we’ll take a mindful walk along Brighton beach. This is a chance to step into the open air, connect with your senses, and enjoy the calming rhythm of the sea. You’ll be invited into stillness and reflection, without pressure or expectation. Somatic Self-Compassion Session Using body-based techniques drawn from psychology and contemplative practice, this session helps you tune into your needs from the inside out. You’ll learn how to notice tension, soften your inner dialogue, and reconnect with a sense of safety and ease in the body. Journalling and Group Reflection You’ll end the day by gently considering what taking care of yourself really looks like going forward. Through journalling prompts and an optional group reflection, you’ll be supported to articulate what you need, how you might ask for it, and how you can stay connected to other PNAs doing the same. You don’t need to be creative, physically fit, or “good at mindfulness” to take part. You just need to show up, as you are. You will walk away from this powerful experience with a renewed sense of energy and clarity about your role, a deeper connection to your own values, and practical tools for taking better care of yourself. But perhaps most importantly, you’ll leave feeling less alone, having met like-minded PNAs who share your passion and understand your struggles. This day is an invitation to build lasting relationships, grounded in mutual support, shared purpose and the kind of compassion you so often extend to others. Now, it’s your turn. Led by Someone Who Truly Gets It The retreat is led by Dr Nathan Illman , Clinical Psychologist and founder of Nurse Wellbeing Mission . Nathan has supported hundreds of nurses and midwives through restorative workshops, coaching and training, and is deeply committed to helping PNAs stay resourced, connected and inspired in their work. Expect depth, authenticity, and a good dose of humour. Information Source: Nurse Wellbeing Mission | eventbrite

We're absolutely delighted to be welcoming Alan Hollinghurst back to Watererstones Brighton, this time for the paperback release of his 7th novel, the astonishing 'Our Evenings'. 2004 Booker winner Alan Hollinghurst is coming to Waterstones Brighton to discuss his latest novel, 'Our Evenings' - the poignant, funny, powerful and expansive 7th novel from the writer described by many as one of the greats of our age. 'Our Evenings' is an account of the life of protagonist Dave Win, as a schoolboy and student, his first love affairs, in London, and on the road with an experimental theatre company, and of a late-life affair, which transforms his sixties with a new sense of happiness and a perilous security; but it is also, very movingly, the story of his hard-working widowed mother, whose own life takes an unexpected new turn after her son leaves home. It is also a story of race, class, sexuality, love and violence, from a master novelist still at the very peak of his talents. We are so very lucky to have him coming back to Brighton and hope that many of you will be joining us for what will be a very special evening. Please note: book & ticket price includes a paperback copy of 'Our Evenings' (rrp £9.99) available for collection on the night. Please be in touch on events@waterstones.com if you have any questions or requirements around accessibility. Information Source: Waterstones | eventbrite
