Book at Lunchtime is delighted to welcome Professor Adam Smyth (English) to discuss his acclaimed work The Book Makers. The wonderful review in the Financial Times last year provides a taste of how captivating this discussion will be.  This is a triumphant and seductive story; it is also one to which Adam Smyth’s absorbing The Book-Makers presents an alternative. The flipside, he writes, “is the world of jobbing printing: the production of cheap, everyday, usually ephemeral texts, the torrent of nonbook print that has circulated in the world since the 1450s”. The pink paper (or pink-tinged screen) on which you’re reading this now is a living part of that story: a testament to the way in which books have only ever formed a tiny part of the crowded landscape that is print culture. With this reframed understanding of progress in mind, Book-Makers explores the lives of a handful of men and women who each contributed something distinctive to the history of the book. The story they collectively tell is not one of continuous technological improvement but rather a cyclical drama of making and remaking of the idea of the book itself. The Bridge of Sighs (Oxford University, UK) is officially called Hertford Bridge, a famous attraction of Oxford University, the Bridge of Sighs was built in 1913 (completed in 1914), it crosses the New College Road to connect the old and new parts of Hertford College, is a famous attraction of Oxford University, Designed by Sir Thomas Jackson (Sir TomasJackson), this bridge is called the sigh bridge in Venice, Italy. After the tour group came to Oxford, I was only able to take a look.

The Bodori Library of Oxford University is the general library of Oxford University. It is one of the oldest libraries in Europe (opened in 1602) and the second largest library in the UK after the British Library. It is one of the six statutory libraries in the UK. All Oxford publications will be automatically sent to this collection when published. There are many branches under the library, of which Radcliffe Camera branch has become an important landmark of Oxford University. There are many books stored here. Students who are not Oxford University can also visit. The Hakatori Library consists of a group of buildings of different historical periods and different styles, and is said to have underground channels between the buildings.

For a few pounds you can climb to the top of the tower and enjoy the 360-degree view of Oxford, the beautiful long strips and the southern city. The church porch was built for four or five hundred years and its spiral columns are a major innovation in British architectural history.
