Slaves of Fashion: Art of the Singh Twins – Personal Reflections on Hidden Stories of Empire, Colonialism, and Their Legacies
 (Manchester University Press, 2025).
This richly illustrated, artist-designed book showcases 
Slaves of Fashion
, an 
award-winning series of portrait-based allegorical and narrative works
 by contemporary British artists The Singh Twins. 
Slaves of Fashion
 explores 
diverse histories and legacies of empire and colonialism
 through the history of 
Indian textiles
. It is a global story of 
conflict, conquest, exploitation, slavery, intercultural exchange, and changing fashion.
 The series connects these themes to the trade in luxury goods during an age of maritime exploration, colonisation, and industrialisation—all driven by the commercial interests of competing and expanding European imperial powers, from the fifteenth to the mid-twentieth centuries. The book includes detailed interpretations of the artworks, representing The Singh Twins’ personal reflections on this story and its relevance to topical debates around racism, cultural ownership, decolonisation, ethical trade, and consumerism. It also offers insight into the making of the artworks, which draw on academic research, historical archives, and museum collections.

 Director of Cultural Legacies at the Bluecoat. The will discussion will be illustrated with images from the ‘Slaves of Fashion’ series and followed by a signing of the 
Slaves to Fashion
 publication.
The Singh Twins
 are internationally recognised contemporary British artists, known for their highly detailed narrative, symbolic, and eclectic style, combining hand-painted and digital techniques. Through their work, which they describe as Past-Modern, they comment on modern-day society, politics, and culture, challenge Eurocentrism in the art world, and demonstrate the contemporary relevance of history and tradition. They have each received many awards, including being made Honorary Citizens of Liverpool in 2009.
Bryan Biggs
 is Director of Cultural Legacies at 
the Bluecoat
, the UK’s oldest arts centre, where he has worked on exhibitions, live programmes, international exchanges, publications, residencies and a major capital development. He first curated an exhibition by The Singh Twins in 1994. He has participated in many discursive events around visual and popular culture, convening the conference, 
Perspectives on a decentred decade
 (2022) for the British Art Network. He has an Honorary Doctorate from University of Liverpool and is an Honorary Fellow of Liverpool John Moores University, where (as Liverpool Polytechnic) he studied fine art. He continues his art practice, and since 2013 has made a drawing every day.

Anfield has always been a nice stadium. The Kop driving the atmosphere into the other stands. Now they two stands have been extended I have been worried that the atmosphere might be lost, particularly when seared in the upper tiers but having experienced several seat locations I have to say that it&#39;s as good as ever. Probably one of the good stadiums in Europe.The exterior has been vastly improved over the years too , We did the stadium tour and it was very good. Audio tour on every corner. 😃

I didn&#39;t know much about this museum at first, but my son insisted on going. I took a taxi in the rain and it was really rewarding. The special exhibition of the return of the gods inside is all cultural relics from the ancient Roman era. It is a group of statues from Zeus in ancient Greece. You can see the complete body of Venus and the heroic Athena. The background music is that people in ancient Rome held banquets and created a god for this purpose. There is a painting from Rubens&#39; studio that is very funny. You can take a closer look. The ancient Egyptian pavilion of the museum made my son praise it. Compared with the exhibition of the British Museum, the layout here is reasonable, the description is clear, and the display is clear! In the eyes of an outsider like me, it&#39;s not crowded with people in the British Museum anyway, and I can&#39;t see anything. I came to Liverpool and I knew that the research on ancient Egyptian civilization here is not inferior to the British Museum! Friends who are interested can come and take a good look. The World Museum is indeed worthy of its name. It has a cultural relic exhibition hall from all over the world. It&#39;s the first time I&#39;ve seen anything related to Eskimos! From clothes to supplies, it&#39;s an eye-opener. There are also Mayan and Indian ones. You can see them even if you don&#39;t go to America. The African part is arranged according to countries and regions, and the exhibits are very rich. There are also reflections on the colonization of Africa in the past, which reflects the conscience of cultural people. The aquarium is very fun. Some of them are local characteristics of Liverpool, which are different from the ones we are familiar with in the Pacific Ocean. This museum is a good place to bring children. Many children are playing in it. There is a large space inside, and you don&#39;t have to worry about bumping into them. The staff are very helpful. When we left, we called Uber. Because parking was not allowed at the entrance of the museum and it was raining heavily outside, we asked the staff about the location of the nearby roads. He specially took out a nearby map for us and introduced the situation in detail. Thank you. In fact, St. John&#39;s Garden is next to the museum, but it was a pity that it rained heavily and we didn&#39;t have a chance to take a good walk. Going further, you can see the Shankly Hotel. My son said that this should be a must-check-in place for Liverpool fans.
