Hostels in Yunnan, China

Overall, it's pretty good; it's a large hostel. The pros: There's a restaurant and a terrace where you can relax outdoors and in the restaurant during the day. There's no minimum spend, and all guests staying at the hostel can use these facilities for free. You can also eat takeout in the restaurant or outdoors, even after checking out on the same day – they won't kick you out. You can also do laundry, and the location isn't far from Cuihu Lake; it's right outside, so transportation is convenient. Since it's a hostel, it's normal for people to have different sleeping schedules and come and go at night, so mutual understanding and respect are important. The bedsheets were quite clean. However, for a few tens of yuan a night, what more can you expect? The hostel didn't complain about me being poor, so what right do I have to be picky? You should know what you paid for.

The location is a bit of a journey – after getting off at Dali Station, you take bus number 4 for about 40-50 minutes, and it's located across from Dali Ancient City. I found it easily using the Baidu app. Once you enter, there's a small garden, and the reception is in the middle of it. I chose the most comfortable and free-spirited bed, and right in front of it, you can exercise. There's a punching bag, a bike, and what looks like a stair climber. The toilet is in the room itself, but for the shower, you have to go to the main house, where there's also a washing machine (8 yuan). Aside from a slight strange smell from the bed's wall, the bed isn't uncomfortable at all, and there's an electric blanket, so it wasn't too cold at night. I decided to stay for another day. Oh, and the owner speaks English, so communication is not an issue.

Overall, my experience was fantastic! The hostel's exterior is quite minimalistic, but the restaurant inside features traditional ******* decor, offering a great way to experience and appreciate ******* culture. The host, a lovely and engaging young woman, is incredibly warm and approachable – whether you're an introvert or an extrovert, you'll have no trouble connecting with her. What's more, this place attracts people not only from all over China but also from different countries around the world, creating a truly wonderful atmosphere! If I ever return to Shangri-La, I'll definitely choose to stay here again! A truly great experience!

Excellent! The owner is really warm and knowledgeable. The place is very clean, and the common areas are spacious. Plus, there's a fantastic rooftop where you can read and enjoy the breeze. The location is super convenient too, right next to Kunming Railway Station – just a 3-minute walk. The subway station is 5 minutes away, and a bus stop is only 2 minutes. There's even a direct bus to Changshui Airport nearby. All in all, everything was great. I'll definitely choose this hostel again, whether for a longer stay or just a layover. As someone who's been backpacking around the world for 13 years, I highly recommend it!

The owner of the place is very friendly and very approachable, had a nice conversation with him. Now back to the room, it's pretty basic and cheap compared to other similar rooms of other hotels/hostels. The bathroom is lacking some amenities, no soap and toilet paper or bath towel so you gotta sort it out yourself but its easy to source those things because there are so many convenient stores around the premise. I'm happy with the late check out at 2pm. It gave me a the experience I need with the blue moon lake and ample time for me to spend a half day trip there. The bed has electric heating and room has no air-conditioning, but it's bearable for me even if the temperature outside falls to 0 celcius, but remember the bathroom is practically ”outside” 😉, so as the tents lol. Overall really good budget option.

Although I have not stayed in the Youth Hostel many times, this one is really comfortable and relaxing. I stayed in a quadruple room, the environment was quiet and pleasant, without noise and disturbance, and it would not make people feel lonely. Especially worth mentioning is that there are several spacious halls in the Youth Hostel for people to relax in a daze. Here, time seems to slow down, I enjoy this unprecedented sense of relaxation, and my heart is extremely comfortable. Fortunately, I encountered a wonderful experience of picking fruit and looking for fungi in the mountains. I climbed the treetops without hesitation, and soon I harvested bags of fruit full of joy that I could share with my friends, full of happiness. And looking for fungus in the forest is a generous gift from nature. I sincerely appreciate the tolerance and love of the earth for us, and feel that the world is worth our heart to cherish and love.

This hostel is amazing ! Everything is perfectly clean, at the reception they speak perfect English and can give you indications on what to do and directions. The hostel is really nice, you have a rooftop where you can enjoy some time outside. There is a place to do laundry and they provide laundry detergent for free, you even have a place to hang your clothes to let them dry. There is a small restaurant where you can have yunnan specialities as well as some european dish (pasta, burger). I had a really good stay and will definitely comeback next time I am in Kunming.

The hostel is located at the west gate of the ancient city. The No. 19 bus nearby goes directly to Tuanshan Folk House Scenic Area and the Seventeen-Arch Bridge. It takes only ten minutes to walk from the hostel to the West Gate Ancient Well. The owner is very friendly to the guests and it feels pretty good.

I found the room to be exceptionally good, very clean, and completely odor-free. The restrooms and shower areas were cleaned daily. The location is absolutely fantastic, and I loved it. I really hope to stay here again on my next visit and will definitely recommend it to more people. It's just so convenient and efficient. The location here is excellent. I especially want to commend them for their 'no loud noises after 11 PM' policy and for ensuring a quiet environment overall – they do a superb job with that.

The staff here is quite nice, they give you a disposable towel (a nightmare for the environment but it's a kind gesture, though), there is free drinking water at the reception and there was a washing machine that was free to use. The building is super interesting and has a very cool cylinder-shaped courtyard where people love taking photos. The building is full of artsy places and cafés. The reception is on another floor and quite far away from the dorm, though. That also means that most people will stay in the dorm, eating, being on phones etc. The problem here is that the hostel failed to put up signs that food isn't allowed in the rooms so you can't point those guests towards it. What is normal in almost every other country isn't normal in this one. Whenever I have a roommate who feels like he needs to burp every 30 seconds, fart and clear his throat at the same time, I want to book a ticket out of this country immediately. At this hostel I was also unlucky in that regard. I'm mentioning this because certain types of hostels attract certain types of people. These Chinese-style squat toilets they have here mean that you will stand in someone else's piss every time you enter the bathroom. And that toilet is right underneath you when you take a shower.
