This is the first hotel we've stayed at in years that had an actual key for the room. It took us a couple of days to realize we were supposed to leave the key at the front desk instead of taking it out with us. There is a nice onsen. The women's side has an indoor bath and outdoor bath while the men's has the same plus a sauna. The women's side is accessed with a code you will get on check-in. The breakfast was a highlight of the stay with lots of authentic and local choices. There was some variety each morning. I'd recommend going a bit later to breakfast - the 6:30am start is busy with those going out for hiking and golf. 7am was much quieter. There are plenty of restaurants within walking distance if you're around for lunch and dinner. We speak a bit of Japanese and the staff spoke some English as well so we were able to communicate enough. If you're arriving by train, definitely plan to take a taxi from the station. It cost 1400 yen and would be a long, confusing walk.

The Suzuran-tei restaurant I had booked was located in the back, so it might be a little inconvenient, but the view was nice and it didn't seem too bad.
