Mercure Hotel Garmisch Partenkirchen

My overall experience with this hotel was bad, unfortunately. Even before my arrival. By mid-October, I booked and paid in advance a 2 nights stay at Mercure Garmisch-Partenkirchen, from the 1st to the 3rd December. A couple of weeks later, I realized that I made a mistake with the dates, since the right dates for me would be from the 8th to the 10th (the weekend afterwards). I contacted both the hotel (which took a long time to answer) and the ALL/Accor customer support and asked to move my reservation (already completely paid!) 1 week forward, also 2 nights, also from Friday to Sunday. After a few more days, I received a final answer from Mrs. Eva Binder (Hotel General Manager), wrote me that the rate I chose was not flexible and not refundable, that she had “hands bound” (her words) but I would be offered 15% discount for a reservation in my desired dates, as a gesture of good will… Let’s put this into numbers: I had already paid 160,20€ in advance and the hotel already had the money! But since the hotel refused to move the dates, if I would make a second reservation, I would probably have a discount of 24€ (if I would achieve the same rate), but would still lose the paid 160,20€... Based on this scenario, I had no alternative than to stick to the originally booked dates. This was not what I expected after 12 years of loyalty to the Group, and have reached Platinum and Gold membership levels (currently Gold). Before driving off from home, I tried to do the check-in online, as I always do, but even this was not working. When I arrived at the hotel, the reception from the staff was somewhat cold and suspicious. They could not find my reservation, even when I showed the booking code on my phone. It took minutes until I got a room (I was even invited to sit down and wait), and the receptionist then came to the room with me to check if there was someone already there (!)… Never had this situation before. I presented my membership card (it is still a Platinum, because when I moved to Gold, I never received a new one). This should have dissipated some tension and should have triggered a welcome drink automatically. But neither, nor. Then I asked the receptionist about my welcome drink (due to my loyalty level), and he said he was busy, but I could get it later. I allowed a couple of minutes and went to the reception and got the drink, when a power surge happened (of course this has nothing to do with the hotel, but the system went down and the search for my reservation could not take place – therefore, I went to sleep). Please note that the power surge was about 15 minutes after my arrival, therefore cannot be used as an argument for not finding my reservation, even after showing its code. Next day was a normal day for me (in the morning I asked if they found my reservation, and the answer was yes – that made me feel relieved and I thought finally everything would be ok.). But in the evening, I went to the reception and asked for recommendations

The place is like a small village with buildings scattered across a large area. The ground is neglected (camp grounds like) and poorly lit and difficult to navigate in the dark. There is not much of any service offered when checking in. The overall service is not bad but definitely not a good one. When a guest asked during breakfast if he could take just coffee to go, the answer was that it was NOT POSSIBLE. While one could see that the grounds were under some construction, it was very disappointing that the entire place looked neglected and we didn’t see anyone attending to any part of the outdoor. The entrance to our building was covered with a torn outdoor carpet and locations of room numbers were left for us to guess. Our 123 room was one level downstairs, while the room in the entrance was 132, go figure the logics. No A/C in the rooms and it gets pretty hot and sweaty during the night. The rooms are nice and very spacious while the bathroom are very tight and difunctional. The bathtub is deep and elevated, which makes it difficult to get in and out. The place overall is not maneuverability friendly and there is a lot of walking to get to the room. They do not allow you to drive into the grounds for luggage dropping. Breakfast buffet was very nicely stocked while the layout of the buffet was disfunctional although the space is very large. People were stepping over each other in the different food lines while the seating area was large enough to accommodate twice the number of guests. Overall, there is nothing to make this place a “go to place “ but if no other choice. It is not a bad one. I would not recommend the place for any specific attributes.

Horrible experience, in terms of my second day stay and my experience in the restaurant. I was only going to stay in this hotel on Friday, and Saturday Sunday elsewhere. Given the Friday night well spent there and with a nice room, I canceled my original Sunday plan and booked one more night with Aja. I left the hotel then I came back. I was downgraded from 3rd floor inner circle to the 3rd floor street view room, after I complaint about the street noise, the hotel reception downgraded me even more from the 3rd floor to 1st floor a room in front of the construction site. I do not know what else to say, after telling the reception I am a light sleeper, really needed this vacation which I paid and deserve. She still two times, give me bad rooms. In the end I paid extra to upgrade from Mountain View Standard Room type to their Junior Suite type. I paid 50 euros. And after all, even though I am not getting a actual junior suite, I am glad that after all of these troubles I gone through, I finally get to have a room that is quite for my sleep and a place for my vacation :) So you need to know, they do have a very limited number of rooms that are good for an vacation. And you never know which room they will assign you. They have such different tiers and environment for all of their rooms.

Let’s start by saying that you cannot please everybody. I came here with my family, and we booked two rooms, one for the kids and the loft-style one for the wife and me. This review is based on this experience. I am not sponsored nor incentivized by the hotel. Although there were some outside parking spots, I chose to go underneath the hotel out of sheer curiosity. I’ve enjoyed that quite a bit. I could send the kids to the parking house if they forgot a jacket, or headphones inside the car. There are three major highlights of this place: the first is the view. The hotel faces a mountain wall where you can see the morning sun stretch itself all over it. You can see the town sprawled right at the base of this enormous mountain wall. This is an objective way to review where you are in life and make you think of things bigger than yourself. If you are not into that kind of thing, I can understand. The second is the layout of the hotel. Bear with me on this one, seeing that I am not an architect but a customer. The rooms are not stacked on top of each other like a high-rise. Instead, they are arranged in a fashion where you go to a different department for the pool, then you head to a different department for the parking, and another one for your room. I found it very interesting because navigating inside feels like an adventure. The hotels have at least five elevators. I was baffled to see so many elevators in a hotel in Germany. If walking is not your thing, take the Aufzug. Last thing, this one my family enjoyed quite a bit and that is the restaurant. It is a buffet style for the morning and a reservation in the afternoon. The part worth mentioning here is the delivery and seamliness of the crew operating those restaurants (there are two of them). I am not talking about customer service but intent on ensuring you enjoy your time while eating there. A whole bunch of young people are well-trained in what they do. Of course, some honorable mentions are the pool, the sauna (three styles), the gym, the EV parking, the lake behind the hotel, the hiking path behind the hotel, the game room at the lobby, the dress code, the bar, and lastly the undeniable peace and quiet. I am fortunate to be able to stay there with my family. Nevertheless, we all know there are things in life one simply cannot pay for them.

Ettal as an area doesn’t have a lot to offer. We wanted to go up the tallest mountain in Germany and this was a convenient stop over hotel for that purpose. as the drive to the mountain wasn’t far. The hotel is fairly large but rather dated inside. The young lady on reception was cheerful and her English wasn’t too bad and she tried to help us. However, on the first night we ate in their restaurant and the servers spoke no English, no menus in English and were fairly unhelpful The food was pretty average. The hotel has a small bar near reception but everyone seems to drink outside the front of the hotel where the public can come in also. The room was big and comfortable but the whole atmosphere of the hotel is it needs a refurbish.
