The views from anywhere in Matera are beautiful, but the rooms and terrace at Hotel Sassi are breathtaking. We had a private terrace, shower room and double bedroom with wardrobes and seperate lounge/lobby area with desh and couch. The hotel staff were friendly and the room and common areas were clean. I would highly recommed this place, only drawback could be the on-foot access which is via a number of steps in either direction.

Matera is beautiful & I loved my time there but the room allocated was not. It was very spacious but had no downstairs windows, only the tiny mezzanine floor above did. The aircon was set at 26 degrees which was complained about twice & nothing done. I have also never stayed anywhere and had to complain about no cold water in the shower or bathroom taps. The shower cabinet was held together with a rusty screw & the bathroom mirror urgently needs replacing. Breakfast was ok but please serve coffee in bigger cups!

It was quite an experience staying in a cave hotel! It's not easy to retrofit facilities in a cave so don't expect luxurious bathrooms or decor. The rooms are scattered somewhat and there are lots of steps, like much of Matera so don't stay here if you have mobility issues. Having said that the rooms were adequate for our needs and the breakfast was nice if a bit busy at peak times. Overall we really enjoyed the authentic Matera experience

Stayed in this fascinating hotel in Matera for 3 nights. Our room was in one of the old cisterns carved out of the limestone. While not luxurious, the unique aspect of being in a cave more than made up for any lack of facilities. Matera itself was astonishing - truly exceptional place to visit. Great local restaurants, too, all full of character.

A unique hotel with great views over matera. Our Room built into the cave but still very good with all modern conveniences. Excellent breakfast options and well stocked. The hotel is very well located near the main squares. Many good restaurants are nearby. the sun terrace was most enjoyable. Overall excellent.

Stayed for two nights as part of an Exodus Puglia tour from U.K. . Fabulous hotel , fabulous location five mins walk from main square . Beautiful room with views across the sassi , outside terrace ( ask for room with views towards the old sassi as many do not have these spectacular views . ) excellent breakfast with lots of lovely fresh fruit . Lovely staff , would so recommend this hotel .Lift from levels below if walking back from centre of town , not easy to find but saves a lot of uphill walking . We loved it here . We were following ( & found ) the seven filming locations from the last James Bond film ( No time to die ) all spectacular views . We did a great walking tour with a guide , would recommend, if planning a stay here try for three or four nights as a lot to discover. The staff are so accommodating. Loved it here even though 35 degrees , rest in afternoon as def too hot to walk around during siesta time , found a lovely cafe in central square with a/c conservatory, try the iced fruit teas & macaroons.

we slept in a cave -- it was interesting at first but soon lost its appeal. no air, no windows, damp, musty. not great. breakfast was in a long room like a bowling alley. very tight and uncomfortable. the lady who made our coffees in the morning was rude and short tempered.

A good location, friendly staff, good breakfast. My room was very simple but clean. I liked the terrace overlooking Matera but the chairs weren't very comfortable. There's a lift that goes down to some restaurants which is useful after a long day on your feet.
