Property Description
This elegant 18th century building is where we will welcome you in a sumptuous setting combining history, charm, gastronomy and comfort. The property was built circa 1715, during Frances early Regency period. The most notorious individual within these four walls was, of course, the Marquis de Sade and his Family. His father and his uncle, the well-known Abbe de Sade, were both born in this place. Although he spent most of his life in Paris, it was there in the Chateau de Mazan, in 1772, that the Marquis organized the very first Theatre Festival in France. The plays in which he personally performed were shown on both Mazan and Lacoste castles. During the Revolution, Sade was declared persona non grata in Mazan, the Family archives were destroyed and the Chateau was damaged. After the Revolution, the Chateau remained Sades Family property until 1850. Its use has varied from this date. Initially it was a private residence and later the Chateau played host to a religious school. In 1923, it became Mazan old people house which finally closed in 1999. In early 2001, the Chateau was turned into a hotel. The Elegant Property Collection Team bought it in August 2019 and started a full renovation of the property to restore its magnificent setting. From April 10th 2020, this historical place will reopen for the enjoyment of our guests and offering an authentic historical experience in the heart of Provence. The property, situated in the heart of the Village, has 31 rooms divided in the main building and in an old house (dated back 1695) facing it. Renovated in 2019/2020, the decoration has returned at the origins of the Chateau de Mazan and Louis XV style with a contemporary Provence touch. A special attention have been brought to the garden which has recovered its original setting. Respect of the History, elegance and refinement, Provence spirit are the keys of what the property offers.

Mazan is not very famous in southern France. It is one of many small towns. But it's right on the way to Sault. That is to say, on the way to the lavender tour. The hotel was formerly the private residence of a local lord and was later transformed into a hotel. The public areas of the hotel are decorated with French neoclassical elegance and romance, but the interiors of the rooms are relatively simple. The classic rooms do not even have a decent table, and the bathroom only has a separate tub in the middle of the room. , relatively inconvenient. We booked a classic room. Maybe because we were Asians, we arranged it in the north-facing location closest to the storage room. We wanted to change it but failed. They said that the room I booked only had this orientation. The question is, are there only one or two classic rooms? ? Unless you add another 79 euros, you can change to another room. Later I found out that I was still on the same floor after paying extra. Changing the direction in such a remote place would cost so much that we rationally gave up. However, I have to say that the lobby manager of the hotel is very dedicated. We needed to print our boarding passes when we left the hotel. It happened to be a very busy check-out time. He really tried his best to help us, which reflected the gentleness of a French gentleman and the hotel. Professionalism of managers.

This is a lovely, plush hotel with historical interest. The food was very good. Some of the staff were welcoming. One lady would only address my husband, and there was a very sight froideur at times, however overall it was an enjoyable stay. My husband tripped many, many times in our room on the different levels. He bitterly denounced the lack of high-vis tape on the steps which would have been a sensible Health and Safety precaution 😅. It would equally mar the beauty of the room and sitting room 😅. They had admirable air conditioning. I would actually recommend it.

Beautiful hotel in the tiniest of towns. Great setting and seems to be one frequently primarily by French as we were the only Americans (to me a great sign). Rooms are beautiful and the grounds as well. Great restaurant on property - make reservations ahead of time.

A very unique hotel a bit outside Avignon and close to Gordes with very kind and friendly staff. It#s worth there to stay and I believe especially during summer time it's even more great. The hotel is surrounded by a wonderful park with a large outdoor swimming pool. We hope to come back sometime.

This Chateau was beautiful and so charming. We stayed in one of the classic rooms and it was on the ground floor with outside access to a little seating area. It was not a private outdoor area, but it certainly felt like it because it was tucked away at the end of the garden. Our room felt like we were really staying in a historic Chateau, and the whole experience was idyllic. Our bed was very comfortable, and the shower was beautiful with great shower pressure. The air conditioner worked great. Overall a wonderful experience at the Chateau de Mazan!
