"Although located at the Nikko town centre, the area is a bit quiet with not many shops around. It is closed to the Kanman-ga-fuchi Abyss. Hotel room is big, and the river view is excellent. The onsen is good. Besides traditional inside & outside onsen, there is also jaccuzi style pool. The dinner and breakfast are also taste good."
"I would really like to give this place a full five star because of the spacious room and good service but the location was quite far from the main station and shuttle buses were limited (only 3x per day to the station and back).
Taxis from the station to the hotel costs around 900 yen (additional booking fees would be incurred if the hotel books for you as opposed to hailing one along the streets) which is ok but when you need it too often (because it can get really dark at night on the route without street lights), it’s additional costs to factor in.
Having said that, it is a peaceful place to be with the mountain view at the back of the hotel. Free drinks were provided and I like the spacious dining / living area which is really good for groups to have debrief.
Hotel staff were also really helpful in giving recommendations for food as restaurants tend to close quite early and they also helped me to call a cab on my last day."
"The room was spacious and well-equipped, so overall it was a good stay.
Facilities: Even though I only stayed one night, I was able to use the washing machine and detergent was provided, which was helpful.
Location: It is far from the station, so it may be inconvenient for those using the train.
Parking: Although there were advance instructions on how to use the parking lot, there were some parts that were difficult to understand, and I had a bit of trouble when I arrived at the hotel.
Check-in: I was a little worried after reading the reviews, but I followed the advance instructions and had no problems.
Other: I was bothered by the noise, probably from the children running around in the room next door.
There were noise guidelines posted in the room, so as long as you follow the rules, I don't think there will be any problems."
"Arriving at the train station, I found out the shuttle bus for the hotel wouldn't arrive for another 45 minutes, so we opted to walk there. It takes about half an hour but going uphill in the blazing sun was a bit torturous. The driveway is also very steep, so beware if you have a lot of baggage. Hotel has a wealth of history. It hosted a lot of famous guests in the early 20th century. Modern hotels are sterile in comparison. It's an old building, so is draughty and full of ancient furniture. This may be a turnoff for some but I found it completely charming."
"Having read both the good and bad reviews, I visited with mixed expectations and trepidation. I figured a few things would be ok, considering the price included two meals and it was a weekend during the autumn foliage season, but I was pleasantly surprised.
The owner's service was simply wonderful. He was polite, kind, and humorous, and he even gave me information about traffic congestion and recommended local spots.
The hotel itself wasn't new, but it was well-maintained, and there was an open-air bath in my room, so although I didn't try out the outdoor baths, the bath was nice. The only problem I had was that I had to walk up and down quite a few stairs to get to my room, and wearing slippers and socks made it difficult to walk.
All the food was delicious, too.
I'd definitely stay at this hotel again if I visit Nikko."
"This is an absolutely fantastic hotel, definitely a 5/5! The staff were incredibly helpful and provided excellent service. The location is perfect, and the facilities are comprehensive. The food was delicious, especially the dinner buffet which even featured crab legs. The ambiance was wonderful. You could easily spend your entire trip just enjoying the hotel, and it would be thoroughly worthwhile. It offers incredible value for money; the quality far exceeds the reasonable price. We've stayed here many times, and each visit has been consistently impressive. We've never been disappointed and will definitely be back again. We genuinely love this hotel!"
"I had an exceptional stay at Nikko Stay House Arai, and I would rate it a perfect 10/10. From the moment I arrived, I felt right at home. The accommodations were incredibly comfortable and had a warm, homely atmosphere that made my stay so enjoyable.
The attention to detail in the design and decor truly made it feel like a home away from home. The staff were friendly and attentive, always ready to assist with a smile. The cleanliness and upkeep of the facilities were top-notch.
Overall, my experience was nothing short of fantastic. If you're looking for a place that feels like home, Nikko Stay House Arai is the perfect choice. Highly recommended!"
"Short walk from bus stop or 30 min walk from the Nikko train station. Directly opposite the Nikko Toshogu Shrine and 5min walk to the Shinkyo Bridge.
Our room has a private bath that overlooked the Daiya River. Dinner and breakfast serve at level 1. Friendly staff and service."
"The location is superb, conveniently situated between Tobu Nikko and JR Nikko stations. While the room was a little on the smaller side, it was immaculately clean. The hotel's on-site hot spring (onsen) was also a pleasant bonus. The only minor drawback was that the changing area for the onsen felt a bit rudimentary. The absolute highlight was the complimentary breakfast; it was very generous and delicious. Overall, I would definitely recommend this hotel."

Amazing
GGuest UserThe room was spacious, the bed was comfortable, and the view was great. The free cocktail and coffee services in the lobby were nice, as well as the free drink bar (including one beer per person) near the entrance to the hot spring. The paid massage service was also good. The meals were decent, especially the grilled beef, which simply melted in my mouth. The restaurant staff welcomed us warmly and provided friendly service.
Cons: The variety of hot springs was lacking, and the view from the hot springs was almost blocked, which was disappointing. The lockers for valuables used combination dials, and foreign guests often didn’t know how to use them, locking their room keys inside and struggling to reopen them. This was a major inconvenience. They should switch to a key-and-wristband system like other onsen hotels.
The room itself felt like an old, once-grand mansion that had seen better days. The furniture had many scratches, and the surfaces were worn and peeling. It made me think it must have been impressive in the past. Still, the room was definitely more spacious compared to other hotels.
Jjlow123Most of the reviews are outdated so I thought I'd give an updated review. For one thing, there is WiFi (I have informed the landlady that the website indicates otherwise).
This place is a traditional-style inn. You'll be sleeping in a futon (some Google-fu should help you know how to use one), use two pairs of slippers (one for moving around the house, one exclusively for the toilet) and will also bathe in a Japanese-style shared bathroom. The front gate and bathroom close at 10pm, which is not an issue as everywhere in Nikko closes early and it's too dark to hike outdoors (in early Autumn).
We loved using the onsen to relax after a day of strolling around and hiking, and the delicious Japanese-style breakfast was lovingly prepared by a friendly old granny. The premises are old but well-maintained. Toilets, bathroom and onsen were great but we were there during off-peak season so we didn't need to share so much. Should we return to Nikko, this place will be our first choice!
RRobS.First off, do not trust Google Maps for directions. The directions take you up the alley behind the hotel. The hotel opens on the main street (Hwy. 119 is what Maps indicates).
This is an absolutely great little hotel, well located, clean and everything about the hotel I noticed, well looked after. It has a small, functional onsen that I used.
I was in their hostel section, a single bed, capsule style. A little tough for a creaky, bad knees, old person like me but a great stay. They have a small, affordable breakfast buffet (Oriental-style) for purchase that is decent with a variety of different dishes. And they have a machine that dispenses excellent, fresh coffees and other beverages.
It is a 2-star hotel and I will give it a 5 star rating as a 2 star hotel. Very good little hotel.
HHoSVery old school ryokan run by very friendly who has been working there for many years. Your name will be displayed on the board next to the entrance of the ryokan to show that they were currently welcoming these guests staying at the ryokan! We stayed there for 2 nights with free parking and we didn’t have to drive anywhere until we checked out as the ryokan is within walking distance to the 3 major world heritage listed shrines including The Toshogu Palace.
Avoid room 312 or 313 (which we stayed) which are the smallest rooms. Those rooms in the middle parts are bigger and more comfortable. Do ask for any room facing the back of the ryokan and avoid those facing the front where you only see car parks with coaches coming in the morning bringing tourists to the shrines.
The onsite Onsen for ryokan guests, breakfasts and dinners are the highlights. You’d love the traditional Japanese meals served there and you won’t be hungry.
Would I come back to this ryokan again? Yes definitely due to its location and friendly staff.
GGuest UserThe exterior of the hotel is pretty, but the interior of the hotel is dated and needs a bit of updating. There were parts of the hotel that were completely shut down (maybe there are saving up enough money to one day renovate). However the facilities and rooms are well maintained and the onsens are beautiful and peaceful. There are 2 main onsens, that are separated by men and women. Each day the onsens are switched, in the morning you will go to one, and in the evening before dinner you can experience the other onsen. Onsite there is a really nice restaurant and gift shop that featured local products at reasonable prices. There is a 24 hour coffee/tea station that is free to use. It's a short 10 minute walk from Kinugawa Onsen Station. When you arrive they provide you a yukata to wear while you are staying at the hotel. The rooms are spacious with options for a western bed or japanese style (sleeping on the floor). We opted for the western bed to be higher off the ground as we thought it would be colder to sleep on the ground. Although the rooms are very well heated and was a bit too warm, that we needed to open the window to cool the room down. The rooms have nice views of the countryside. They provide a pitcher of ice water in the room and you can go to the front desk to refill with ice if more is needed. The bathroom is quite large and has both a shower and toilet in a separate room of the bathroom; although we mostly bathed in the onsen. There is a 7-eleven nearby that was open 24 hours, but otherwise there isn't much else around the hotel. Also the town of Kinugawa Onsen closes quite early, around 8pm it's quite deserted. We were there at the end of November 2024, and it seemed that the hotel was mostly unoccupied, so we felt like we had the place to ourselves. It was a very nice one night stay.
GGuest UserWe stayed with four university students.
The facilities were well-maintained, and we had a very fulfilling trip. We were able to use the projector properly and enjoyed it. There was also a washing machine.
Convenience stores and supermarkets were conveniently located within a 3-15 minute drive.
Notes
- Because there is no concierge, when checking in, you must first enter the personal information of each guest on your smartphone or other device, then check in on the hotel's tablet.
(You can also enter your personal information on the hotel's tablet, but there are only two tablets, so check-in takes time and is not smooth.)
- The entire BBQ set is on the balcony, but since it is electronic, charcoal and a lighter are not necessary.
- At night, the light from the room attracts insects, so it's a good idea to spray the insect repellent provided in the room all over the balcony and near the door. (If you do this, you will hardly see any insects. If you don't, be prepared for a lot of small insects.)
- The dishes were clean, but they were sticky with grease from previous guests, so if you are concerned about this, it's best to wash them thoroughly before using.
Some rooms may not have bathrobes. (In our case, there was no standing room, so we brought our own.)
There is a refrigerator, but it felt a little small, so it's important to store it wisely.
GGuest UserThe location is really good. 10 mins away from the station. Easy to find. Big hotel, about 11 floors. The room is quite spacious, part in western style with beds and part in japaneese with tatamis. There is sink in themiddle of the room, quite comfy. Good view to the mountain and forest from the window, 9th floor. Nice yukata to wear, i liked the outerpart. Breakfast and dinner is buffet, quite big choice, free beer for dinner, not so many fruits, no cakes for breakfast (dinner only). There is sushi and sashimi choice, delicious food. Onsen is quite good, clean, big. Will recommend to stay here
GGuest UserI don’t understand why someone would leave a negative review due to their own negligence. Trip.com clearly mentioned the additional 300-yen tax (I assume this is the onsen tax) per person, yet they still claimed they were “scammed.”
My overall experience at Hotel Euro City was wonderful. The staff were extremely nice and helpful, and the shuttle bus service was amazing. If you want to get to the hotel easily, check the shuttle schedule on the hotel’s homepage so you don’t have to walk from the station. They run it every day at 9:00, 9:30, 10:00, 15:15, 16:15, 17:15, and 18:15 from “Nikko Station Hotel Classic,” right next to JR Nikko Station.
The room was spacious and comfortable, and the onsen in the backyard was great. It’s true that the room had a mild smell, but I assume it was due to recent pest control (it smelled like pesticide). Just open the windows for a while and it goes away.
Breakfast was okay—not as fancy as in the advertisements, maybe because it wasn’t peak season. Overall, I think this is a very good choice, especially if you’re traveling with family.
KevinThe most important buffet dinner during the stay was served very late, and the dishes were often empty, which is very rare in Japan.
Because it was less than 700 yuan and included two meals, although the hotel had many flaws, it was understandable, but the faucet in the room seemed to be broken, and the water flow was not smooth, which should be replaced.
Overall, this room was acceptable.
Some top places to stay in Nikko are near popular attractions like Lake Chūzenji and Nikko Toshogu Shrine—so you can quickly get to top landmarks and amenities you need.
