The room is clean, simple, refreshing and quiet. The big glass window faces the mountain and has a good view. The size is not too small and the design is reasonable. We went as a triple generation group of 8. The staff was so helpful and polite. We could only get the family rooms, which was 4 to a room but they were very spacious so we didn't feel crowded. I would highly recommend getting the kaiseki dinner. We enjoyed the private room, the sushi chef preparing our sushi, the owner coming in and checking on us, it was all very special & attractively presented. We all wore our yukatas to dinner and will have an amazing Christmas card picture. The onsen was wonderful, so spacious and full of amenities. They provide lots of amenities in your room too. The breakfast was amazing. My mom grew up in Japan and couldn't get over the selection of Japanese items. Best breakfast we had during our Japan trip. We also utilized the shuttle to Snow Monkey park (which was a highlight of our 12 days in Japan, so many baby monkeys, go early). It was also easily walkable to the train station, even with luggage. We bought gifts in the little gift area and really appreciated the hospitality of all the employees.

I booked a night in Yudanaka with my partner so that we could visit the Snow Monkey Park. Most places were already booked up, so we went for Yorozuya (sometimes romanised as Yoroduya) even though it was a little beyond our budget. At £300 a night for a double room with dinner and breakfast, I thought “this had better be good…” Honestly, it was probably worth double that. The ryokan itself is massive; the atrium has a scale that almost defies sense. We were greeted by staff who were awaiting our arrival, and took our luggage up to our room while we enjoyed a complementary matcha tea. A guide led us up the stairs, handed us XL yukata to wear during our stay and explained the situation with towels. She took us in the lift to our room, and showed us how to access the onsens and where the dining halls would be. We took a few moments to settle into our tatami-floored room, change into our yukata, and investigate the albeit pretty boring view from our balcony. For the record: the joy here is _inside_ the ryokan rather than outside. We tested both the on-site onsen; they operate on schedules so that male guests and female guests bathe separately, but can both enjoy both of the baths. It is worth trying both. It’s a cliché to say, but particularly coming from Europe without much experience of this kind of venue, they made me feel like I was in Spirited Away, if Spirited Away was a series of Hokusai prints. I loved relaxing in the heat of the outdoor bath surrounded by rocks, trees and classically Japanese sculptures, with snow gently falling. Suitably relaxed, it was time for dinner. This was worth the whole booking price alone. We were served a 10-course kaiseki dinner, in a private booth, with attentive staff bringing us fresh water and sake whenever we desired. Every single bite was exquisite. While not 10 courses, this extended into breakfast which was a similar luxurious experience. I was sad we only had one night there, and would go back in a heartbeat. The experience of staying here creates a stronger draw for me to return to Yudanaka than the snow monkeys. We were treated so well, and truly unwound in a setting that felt almost too good to be real.

We came as a family with our three children aged 7, 5 and 2, and we had a great week at Okushiga Kogen Hotel at the end of February 2023. Here are some comments that will help future travelers. We were in the Deluxe Triple room, which was perfect for our family because we had installed a cot loaned by the hotel near the bathroom, which is separated from the rest of the room by a very practical door. The room is large and very pleasant with a nice view of the mountains. We were delighted by the quality of the restaurants (we had opted for the half-board option with breakfast and dinner). The breakfast is perfect with a choice for all tastes (there are even good French pastries and fresh orange juice). The restaurants in the evening are very varied (French, Japanese, French raclette and tepanyaki), and the menus change every evening, so even if you go to the same restaurant in the same week, the menu will be different. At lunchtime, the hotel restaurant is top notch (western or Japanese menu), and there are also options on the slopes. Seeing the photos on social networks, I had doubts about the quality of the restaurants, but I was wrong, it was really VERY good. The hotel bar is also top notch, whether it's the day for a tea, or in the evening for a drink around the fireplace accompanied by a live pianist. We also used the daycare service for our 2-year-old daughter, which was a great help for us to be able to ski during the day. The girls who take care of the children are super nice, sweet and professional. The children are kept in a large room with various games. It's not a club med daycare, but our daughter had a great time there. For older children, there is the international ski club with ski instructors of all nationalities who speak English. The school is right next to the hotel (5 minutes max on foot or on skis), I will put another detailed comment on the ski school page, but we LOVED IT!!! There is nothing to do around the hotel, but you can easily take shuttles to nearby villages. We arrived very late at night after catching the chuo taxi from Narita Airport. The keys were available for us as promised. We were promptly shown to our room. We had booked traditional japanese style room with the tatami mats. While they are not super soft there were a few more mats in the wardrobe - my friend had three and I had four piled on top of each other and that worked a treat. We did feel like the princess and the pea which seemed common after chatting to a few other people staying at the hotel. We had breakfast included in our stay which had either traditional japanese option or the boring western option. Can't rate the quality of a japanese breakfast high enough! We absolutely maximised our time in the onsen. While it didn't have an outdoor option it still worked a treat soothing our weary muscles after a day on the slopes. We had a morning and evening onsen. So so good :) The staff at Villa Ichinose were fantastic! So helpful in their beautiful gentle manner. Nothing was an issue or a bother. Sure the property is a little tired but everything is clean and coupled with great location and staff it's all you could ask for. The communal area in the main reception is a great way to chat to other guests and get an idea of where to go and what to do or what not to do. I loved the location of Villa Ichinose - literally a 5 min walk from the door of the hotel to the slopes. No hassle getting around. Food options around Ichinose are great but there aren't loads of options. And it's worth noting that if you want to dine later than say 6pm then you must book. Most places take walkins around 5:30pm but that was for groups of 2 or 3. Anymore and you are pushing the friendship.
