At the Chinese Character Museum, we deepened our understanding of the evolution of Chinese script and its profound impact on culture. We explored several key exhibitions: 📌M260 Tomb Exhibition Hall – Located in the southern part of the eastern royal tomb area, this “jia”-shaped tomb is where the famous national treasure, the Simuwu Ding, was unearthed. The tomb also contained 22 human skulls buried together in the tomb’s filling. 📌Chariot and Horse Pit Exhibition Hall – This hall showcases the remains of two chariots and horses, with detailed displays explaining the structure, harnessing techniques, and uses of the ancient chariots. 📌Burial Exhibition Hall – Compared to the human skulls displayed at the China Archaeology Museum, the burial pits here are even more shocking and somber. The sacrificial pits, known as "row burial pits," are neatly arranged, with each group representing a separate sacrificial event. Most pits contained sacrificial human remains, including those buried alive or killed before burial. The sacrifices were mainly prisoners of war, with some being slaves. The sight of the countless bones conveys a chilling reminder of a time when brutality overshadowed civilization.

An'Yang Tian Ning Temple. Located in the An'Yang city, Henan province. This pagoda is a symbol of the city. The pagoda was restored several times and after last restoration is being kept well preserved. The beautiful adorns make visitors stay still and look steady at this beauty. Pagoda is not high, so could be spotted only from the city center but do far from its place. The temple pagoda belongs to is not reach but looks beautiful and offer the rest in shadow of the tries. Everyone climbing pagoda tells about hurting knees after. Well, yes, the steps are high, but it is still OK. Whatever, inside it is interesting, too. Take your trip to the AnYang!

Wangling Archeology Site, Yinxu Ruins, An'Yang, Henan. This is true that it's a archaeological site. The excavations are still in a process, but major area was already exposed and available for tourists. Well, at first it is pretty interesting to take a look at the excavation process and understand how is it hard to do such kind of archaeological studies. Second, the artifact collection is well preserved, therefore allowing to make it familiar with details. Third, the going underground is some kind of excitement. These large spaces below the earth and constructions are very attractive for visiting.

Fuhao tomb, Yinxu ruins, An'Yang, Henan. It is located at the left wing of whole Yinxu Ruins Area, near to the wall. The small path is leading there. The tomb demonstrated the burying rites of that epoch, and its content is pretty interesting for curious minds due to the unusual firms of pots. Fuhao tomb is, a miniature of all tombs which could be found across the China. The visiting will take about ten minutes, but impression is guaranteed for whole day.

Oracle Bone Stele Forest. Located in the territory of Yinxu Museum, An'Yang, Henan. Behind the pits there are very silent place in the forest. And these ancient masterpieces if calligraphy created from bones could be found there. When walking along side, the feeling of presence of something immense accompanies you during journey. This place looks like magician forest from fairy tales. By another hand, these patterns have the great historical and cultural significance. And I was glad to have a chance to familiarize myself with it.

Horse and Chariot pits, Yinxu ruins. An'Yang, Henan. Just wow! I have never seen before these things. Well, speaking without any emotions, these are unique artifacts. The excavations offer to take a look at chariots of royal family. There are also horse skeletons. It looks very impressive. That time the unlucky horses were buried together with other belongings during funereal of royal family member. Henan's "Immortal Mountain on the Sea": Anyang Nanhai Temple and the Ancient Stone Bridge The Nanhai Temple in Shanying Town, Long'an District, Anyang City, Henan Province, is located on the south bank of the Anyang River, facing the "Xiao Nanhai Grottoes," a national key cultural relic protection unit, across the river. In ancient times, the canyon here had vast waters, resembling a sea, and it was located south of the ancient city of Ye, hence the name Xiao Nanhai (Little South Sea). It is said that the Nanhai Temple was first built in the Tang Dynasty. Because the main deity enshrined in the temple is Guanyin Bodhisattva, it is also known as "Guanyin Temple." It is also the location of "Shanying Pine Waves," one of the eight scenic spots of Anyang. The ancient stone bridge leading to Nanhai Temple is clearly a flood bridge, similar to a small dam. When I finished visiting the temple and walked back, I discovered that both sides of the bridge (the pier sections) protrude. The entire Lingquan Chan Temple (temple complex) was built in the 21st century and is still undergoing renovations. The only evidence of the temple's history are the two ancient pagodas standing within the temple grounds. The stone carvings on the pagodas shimmer in the sunlight with a millennium-old splendor. Site Features Carved into the mountainside, the Lingquan Temple Grottoes are arranged in three levels: upper, middle, and lower. The niches on each level are not on the same horizontal line, and their height is generally around one meter. They were mainly carved during the Sui and Tang dynasties. The carved pagoda forest on the cliff face of Lingquan Temple is an innovative approach that saves time, effort, cost, and space. While cliff-side niches and pagodas are common in many grottoes, they are usually scattered, fewer in number, and from later periods. The niches here have unique shapes and come in a wide variety.

Originally built in 1958, Anyang Museum moved into the Anyang Library and Museum Complex on December 25, 2008. As of 2019, it has a collection of over 10,000 cultural relics. On November 26, 2013, Anyang Museum was awarded the title of "Patriotic Education Demonstration Base of Henan Province." The Shang people worshipped divination and recorded everything in oracle inscriptions, which left behind oracle bone inscriptions. Over time and history, it evolved into the current Chinese characters. You see, the oracle inscriptions of that time were inlaid with turquoise, and there was also a divination about the fact that Zi, the son of King Wu Ding of Shang and Fu Hao, was sick but still wanted to go to school. The largest bronze ware in China, the Houmuwu Ding, comes from Yinxu. Now it is a replica in the National Museum of China. On the day of the Lunar New Year, we drove five hours straight to Anyang, the northernmost prefecture-level city in Henan Province, bordering Handan, Hebei Province. More than 3,000 years ago, Anyang was the capital of the Shang Dynasty, and the capital is now called Yinxu. Perhaps because it is far from the city circle of Zhengzhou, Kaifeng, Luoyang, and Xuchang, Anyang is not a large city, and its municipal construction is relatively simple. We found a restaurant ranked second in the city for lunch. We ordered a dish called "Fengjiang Rice" that tasted like salty rice, a dish called "Anyang Stew", and half a Daokou roast chicken. We spent CNY 50 per person and didn't finish the food. The prices were reasonable. Yinxu is divided into two parts. One part is the Yinxu Museum, which records and displays the history of the Shang Dynasty. The ticket is CNY 80, and the night tour is CNY 40. It is rare to see a museum that requires a ticket. The other part is the Yinxu Ruins, including the royal tombs and ancestral temples. A ticket for both sites is CNY 50. The ancestral temple is not far from the museum and includes the tomb of Fu Hao, the chariot pit, and other tombs. The burial objects have been moved to the museum. The royal tombs are not close to the ancestral temple, and there is a paid ferry. The Simuwu Ding, now called the Houmuwu Ding, was discovered there. Of course, the Ding is not in the royal tombs or the Yinxu Museum but is on display in the National Museum. The Shang Dynasty, as a representative of slave society, became famous because of the Ming Dynasty novel "Fengshen Yanyi". The founder of the Shang Dynasty, Cheng Tang, was a wise ruler as famous as Yao, Shun, and Yu. He overthrew Xia Jie and established the Shang Dynasty. Later, the Shang ruler "Pan Geng" moved his people to "Yin", which is now Anyang City, and made Yin the capital for more than 200 years. The Shang Dynasty is also called the Yin Shang. Later, Pan Geng's nephew "Wu Ding" revived the Shang Dynasty. Wu Ding's wife and concubine "Fu Hao" was the first female general to lead troops in battle. After Wu Ding, the Shang Dynasty declined, and several generations later, "Di Xin", the King Zhou, was replaced by the Western Zhou Dynasty. Of course, the city of Zhaoge, where King Zhou died, is not in Anyang but in today's Hebi City, Henan Province. It can be understood that King Zhou moved to a new house but did not sell the old one, so Yin was still the capital until the fall of the Shang Dynasty. The Yinxu Museum has two floors. The second floor introduces the culture of the Shang Dynasty, while the first floor is a patchwork of exhibitions. The culture of the Shang and Zhou Dynasties was mainly recorded by the characters on oracle bones and bronzes, which are commonly known as oracle bone inscriptions and bronze inscriptions. The Shang Dynasty had both of these writing carriers. Bronze inscriptions are also called Jinwen, which were passed down to the Western Zhou Dynasty and later, while oracle bone inscriptions were rarely found after the Shang Dynasty. The Yinxu Museum has many bronzes and ancient jades. With the large tombs nearby, there is a sufficient supply of artifacts. However, after seeing many bronzes, they are all similar, and there are not many surprises. The collections of the National Museum, Hunan Museum, Hubei Provincial Museum, and Shaanxi History Museum are very different. The regular configurations of animal head knives and arrowheads are common, but the bronze bell is a bit novel. It reminds me of an ancient poem, "A man is judged by his clothes, and a horse by its saddle. A dog with a bell runs happily." Even dogs in the Shang Dynasty needed emotional value. Oracle bone inscriptions were first used for divination, which was popular among the people of the Shang Dynasty. They could divine whether it would rain or whether there would be a war. "Jia" refers to tortoise shells, and "Gu" refers to ox bones. Holes were drilled in the oracle bones, and then they were heated. The cracks formed patterns, which were the earliest oracle bone inscriptions obtained through divination. Later generations copied these characters, and some were further developed and evolved. This source of writing is considered a gift from nature. Many of these characters have not been deciphered or recognized to this day. For example, the characters for men and women on the toilet door are written in such a way that if you go to the wrong one, you can't blame others. The oracle bone inscriptions in the museum are not only in the exhibition area. There are oracle bone noodles in the rest area, which are said to be written on the noodles with squid ink. Few customers eating the noodles know what they are eating. Because we entered the museum in the afternoon and missed the meal time, we saw a little dragon eating noodles in the cultural and creative area. There are also stone bricks with the names of Shang Dynasty monarchs and tribal leaders before the Shang Dynasty on the stone road outside the museum. I happened to see "Wang Hai". The names of people in the Shang and Zhou Dynasties are difficult to remember. The ten heavenly stems and twelve earthly branches were used more often, and there were no clear rules for seniority and taboos. Moreover, the distinction between surnames and clan names was not uniform, and people's understanding was not uniform. For example, King Zhou was called Di Xin, but he was actually surnamed "Zi" and named "Shou". So, it is unknown whether King Zhou favored Daji, but he was definitely Shou. Wang Hai was a person before the Shang Dynasty. He led the Shang people to carry out barter trade in the Xia Dynasty and was good at doing business. To commemorate him, later generations called merchants "Shang Ren". Wang Hai is also considered a god of wealth by the people. On the first day of the first lunar month, I happened to take a picture of the stone brick of the god of wealth. The meaning of "wealth and prosperity" cannot be underestimated. I decisively refunded the ticket for the ancestral temple ruins. Saving CNY 50 is earning CNY 50. The ticket for the ruins is a package ticket, but I originally only wanted to visit the ancestral temple ruins because it is close to the museum. However, it was almost 5 pm when I left the museum, and the traffic outside was already congested. When I arrived at the entrance of the ancestral temple ruins, it was already closing time. I took a photo at the entrance as a souvenir. The road back to the hotel was still congested, and there was no staff to ease the traffic. During the trip to Henan during the Lunar New Year, I experienced the hospitality of the people in the Central Plains everywhere I went, but nothing was solved. It was truly "enthusiastic attitude, chaotic order". We hitched a ride back to the hotel from the scenic area and ordered a bowl of lamb paomo and a bowl of lamb hui mian, along with the leftover Daokou roast chicken from lunch. We finished eating early and went to bed early. The next day, we drove along the highway to Tangyin, a county under the jurisdiction of Anyang. We had to visit the Yue Fei Temple here, as it is said that there is one more bronze kneeling figure here than in Hangzhou. Traitors are more hateful than enemies. We didn't have time to take a closer look, so we took a quick photo and continued on our way. After a four-hour drive, we arrived at Shaolin Temple.

Baoshan is located 25 kilometers southwest of Anyang County, Anyang City, Henan Province. The mountain has two peaks in the north and south, with an east-west canyon in the middle. The grottoes are on both sides of the canyon. It was named because there was an old Lingquan Temple in the middle (originally called Baoshan Temple, and renamed Lingquan Temple during the Kaihuang period of the Sui Dynasty (Emperor Wen of Sui)). There are 106 caves on the North Peak and 64 caves on the South Peak, a total of 170 caves. The construction of the Daliusheng Grottoes began in the fourth year of Wuding in the Eastern Wei Dynasty (546 AD) and lasted for more than 600 years until the end of the Song Dynasty. By the end of the Qing Dynasty, there were only 209 grotto statues and cliff stone pagodas left, including two stone pagodas each from the Northern Qi Dynasty and the Tang Dynasty. The existing buildings are all modern reconstructions. The Dazhusheng Cave, which was carved in the ninth year of Kaihuang in the Sui Dynasty (589 AD) in the middle of the southeast side of the North Peak, is a masterpiece of the cave sculptures. It is square in plan with an area of ​​5.8 square meters and a round arched door. On both sides of the door are sculptures of the gods Kapila and Narayana. They have sturdy bodies, wearing helmets and armor, holding swords and forks, and stepping on cattle and sheep, looking strong and ferocious. There is a Buddhist niche above the door, with a Buddha and two Bodhisattvas carved inside. There is a lotus caisson carved on the top of the cave, and flying figures carved around it, which are vivid and elegant. To the northwest of the Lingquan Temple site is a pair of single-story square stone pagodas from the Northern Qi Dynasty, 2.5 meters high and with simple carvings. They are the cremation pagodas for Master Daoping. They are engraved with an inscription of March 17, the second year of Heqing in the Da Qi Dynasty (563 AD). This is the earliest outdoor stone pagoda in China. There is a pair of nine-story square towers from the Tang Dynasty. They are dense-eaves pavilions with a total height of six meters. The tower bodies are engraved with Buddha, his disciples and guardian gods, and the tower bases are decorated with carvings of performers holding musical instruments such as flutes, shengs, drums, pipa, and konghou.
