It is located on the south side of the Sognefjord in the Sognen traditional area. The earliest inhabitants lived by hunting and fishing until about 2,000 years ago, when they gradually began farming. Agriculture remains important because of the fertile valley floors and abundant mountain pastures. Tourism entered the community as early as the mid-19th century in the form of fishing and hunting. Visitors from the UK predominated during this time and one can still find English names for hilltops, hunting lodges and fishing holes. Later, another type of tourist came to the area.
