2025 Freiburg im Breisgau Travel Guide: Must-see attractions, popular food, hotels, transportation routes (updated in March)

A university city, Freiburg im Breisgau, is easily reachable by trains and bus, with both being highly frequent and affordable. Flixbus and DB will be good search engines to use, the former having great rates if you book early. We managed to get EU5 to Strasbourg, France! The city itself is curious to explore and has a youthful vibe. We marvelled at how one could sit on the bridge and chat with friends (you’ll need to zoom in the photo to get what I mean). The streets and architecture are fascinating and transports one back into an era forgotten. In the evening, if you follow the sounds of the cathedral chimes, you’ll reach a square where you can also find some street vendors for wooden toys and snacks like roastes chestnuts! We stayed at Adagio, which is about a 10 minute tram ride away. Trams are frequent and there is a day-group pass which makes it cheap to travel together. While the aparthotel provides the option for breakfast, you can also source fresh ingredients from the 3 supermarkets nearby (Aldi, Lidl, and my favourite, Kaufland) to prepare your own meals. There are restaurants in the area too. Guests in Freiburg do not qualify for the Konus card (free regional transport) but there are ways around it with DB group travel and regional passes. #blackforest #accorhotels

It is a great place to pick up some coffee and fresh blooms for the day or just to take a stroll on the cobblestone paths. There were approximately 100+ stalls with a wide variety of products ranging from vegetables, meats, fruits, cheese, crafts, accessories, plants and flowers. I read later that the market is open every day from Monday to Saturday, till 1.30pm. It is situated just in front of the Freiburger Munster (Cathedral) which is a landmark in Freiburg. [Below are some recommended foods that I heard about from my local friends during my study abroad in Freiburg!] Freiburg is a city with many students, and there are many delicious cafes and restaurants as well as beautiful churches and shopping. In particular, the cafe "Schmidt" located very close to Freiburg Central Station is recommended by university professors! I had never eaten a tart in Japan with a crispy bottom like a cookie. (Photos show Black Forest cherry cake and strawberry cake) I especially recommend the cherry cake. The cherries soaked in liquor go well with the light, low-fat fresh cream. The chocolate and cherries sprinkled on the chocolate sponge add a nice texture! There is also a snack store about a minute away from the cafe, where you can enjoy sandwiches and quiches depending on your mood that day. You can also buy bread filled with a lot of hard rye, which is typical of Germany. There is also a schnitzel restaurant near the university where you can eat at an affordable price. It's relatively cheap compared to other stores, so I used to go there a lot. Finally, it's not just about Freiburg, but there are a lot of gelato shops in Germany.
