The Enigmatic Ancient Shrine of Izumo: Iya Shrine in Shimane Prefecture
Located in Higashi Izumo Town, Shimane Prefecture, Iya Shrine is a mysterious and ancient shrine shrouded in the secrets of ancient Izumo. Situated near "Yomihirasaka," believed to be the entrance to the underworld, this historic shrine is mentioned in Japan's oldest historical texts, including the "Kojiki," "Nihon Shoki," and "Izumo no Kuni Fudoki," which document myths and legends of Izumo.
Despite its historical significance, the exact period of its establishment remains unknown, adding to its mystical charm. Upon passing through the stone torii gate at the shrine's entrance, visitors are greeted by the impressive "Zuijin Gate" adorned with a sacred rope. Continuing along the path, on the left-hand side, you'll find the beautifully carved wooden worship hall and main hall.
Interestingly, the placement of the worship hall and main hall to the left after passing through the gate is considered rare nationwide.
The shrine exudes a sacred atmosphere unique to ancient Izumo, offering a tranquil moment to realign your spirit amidst its timeless aura.
