Birkenau II Camp
We arrived at Birkenau II after a 10-minute free shuttle bus ride from the Auschwitz Museum.
This place is much larger than the Auschwitz Museum, and the railway used to transport the Jews is still there.
There are a number of hut-like buildings lined up, each with beds and toilets, but it is heartbreaking to think of the conditions at the time, with eight people crammed into one sleeping space, and people having to endure drafty conditions and temperatures of minus 20°C in winter.
There are also gas chambers used for mass murder, but the remains of the gas chambers and the remains of bodies buried there by the Germans, who tried to destroy evidence when defeat was imminent, remain vividly.
Aschwitz is in a better condition, so it would be interesting to compare the two.
If you want to take your time, it will take about a day because the facility is so large.
