#MarchGoodPlaces2025 During the off-season, I stayed at the resort next to the Hakuba Ski Resort - Hotel Green Plaza Hakuba. It cost less than NT$4,000 and included breakfast for two! Although I can’t ski, at least I can soak in the hot springs, which is pretty nice. The appearance of the Baima Green Plaza Hotel is very eye-catching. The white townhouse with a red pointed roof looks like a cottage in a fairy tale. Coupled with the blue sky and green land, it is super dreamy! The hotel is actually quite old, as can be seen from the fact that the room card is used as a key. The decoration of the Japanese-style room is also a bit old-fashioned. The tatami floor mat makes the space feel larger, and the overall light is dim. Fortunately, the beautiful scenery outside the window greatly adds to the charm, as you can see the beautiful mountain and forest scenery of the ski resort. Being close to the ski resort is a plus in winter, but it also means that the location is relatively far from the city. #Cable car Tsugaike Plateau is a great place for hiking in the summer and a famous ski resort in the winter. Taking the cable car up and down the mountain is a very comfortable trip. Starting from Tsugaike Plateau, you need to take two types of cable cars, and the scenery is super beautiful. It also feels like taking a cable car in Switzerland. The first is a small cable car like the Jiu Zu Cable Car. Because there are few tourists, our family can take a car by ourselves. It takes about 20 minutes, and then we walk a short distance to change to a large cable car and continue to ride for about 7 minutes. Tsugaike's Gondola box cable car (large cable car) is 4,120 meters long and is one of the longest cable car lines in Japan. There were staff members on the large cable car giving explanations. Although they were speaking Japanese and I couldn't understand them, I knew they were explaining the ecology of nearby plants. The most special thing was the many purple cones on the treetops. I checked and it should be the purple cones of fir. We went to Tsugaike Nature Park on Tsugaike Plateau, where you can enter for free with your cable car ticket. Cortina D’Ampezzo is undoubtedly the most famous of all the small mountain towns in the Dolomites and due to its popularity, it’s also one of the busiest and most expensive. I’ve spent a lot of time exploring Cortina and its surroundings. The high street boasts high-end fashion stores and fancy restaurants so if you want to intersperse your mountain holiday with some shopping then Cortina is the place to do it. The popularity of Cortina is definitely justified. As soon as I arrived at Green Plaza Hotel Baima, I was shocked by the red-roofed European-style building. As soon as I entered the lobby, it was full of strong European style, red carpets, and spiral staircases, which were very suitable for the mood of vacation. Dinner was served at the buffet restaurant on the second floor, which had a variety of delicious food, including grilled Shinshu beef, various sashimi, fried shrimp tempura, curry, steamed dumplings, pasta, udon, soba, baked food, salad bar, drinks, and alcohol. Some of the alcohol was at your own expense, but it really filled you up. The highlight of a hot spring hotel is the hot spring bathing and yukata. Come to Hokuriku, Japan and stay in a super mysterious hotel Tudor architecture has a fairytale feel The European-style building with red roof is surrounded by mountains and there is a super large ski resort behind it. The overall feeling is not only fairytale, but also a castle hotel with European style. The room features a Western style with a Japanese tatami style. The sum of the two together is really unique. This is Shizen-en Station, the last stop of the Tsugaike Ropeway. After an epic day skiing at Tsugaike Kogen, I wandered into a little local convini —Yamazaki Shop (12840-1 Chikuniotsu, Otari)—just down the road from the resort. I wasn’t expecting much, maybe a warm drink or a snack. But what I found was next-level. Strawberries. Giant ones. Literally as big as my palm. I had to do a double take. Perfectly red, glossy, and fragrant, they were irresistibly sweet with just the right touch of tartness. I later found out they were likely Benihoppe—a premium variety often grown in Nagano and Shizuoka. It made total sense, because they tasted like they’d been picked at the exact perfect moment. Eating those strawberries outside the shop, snow still clinging to my boots, with the mountains glowing in the late afternoon light—pure magic. One of those unexpected, unforgettable travel moments.

Our visit to Tsugaike Kogen Ski Area in early February was fantastic. We were incredibly lucky to experience three straight days of wonderful powder snow – that light, fresh snow that makes skiing feel amazing. Planning how to get to Tsugaike is fairly simple. However, the direct shuttle bus service to the ski area doesn't run very often, which can make the journey a little difficult. On the bright side, perhaps this limited access helps keep the slopes less crowded, creating a more relaxed feeling compared to busier resorts. For us, the excellent snow and slopes definitely made the extra travel planning worthwhile. Tsugaike really impressed us with its ski slopes, especially for skiers who are learning or want to improve. * Excellent Beginner Area: The main beginner area is outstanding – honestly the biggest and widest I've ever encountered! This huge, gentle slope is perfect for new skiers to practice safely and build their confidence without feeling rushed. * Variety for Everyone: But Tsugaike offers more than just beginner terrain. We enjoyed the nice, long ski runs through the forest, which offer beautiful scenery. There are also plenty of enjoyable slopes for intermediate skiers (those with some experience), plus some more challenging runs for advanced skiers to explore. * Powder Day Joy: During the powder days, the whole mountain was incredible. The wide beginner slopes became soft, snowy playgrounds perfect for learning to ski powder, while the forest runs offered lots of deep snow for fun turns. Overall Thoughts: While you'll need to plan your bus travel carefully, the reward is a superb ski area. Tsugaike features one of the best beginner zones available anywhere, combined with great terrain for improving your skills. Plus, you might get lucky with unforgettable powder snow, just like we did. Overall, Tsugaike Kogen provided a wonderful and memorable ski experience.
